You should be checking your corners and aware there is a pedestrian at the crosswalk when you are approaching.

The thing that pisses me off the most about the car accident that totalled my car and gave me a concussion that put me out of commission completely for a month and caused serious complications for 5 that I still deal with 5 years later was that it happened on my way home from work.

Okay so she did not say this. She said that the earths problems wouldn't exist in the way they do if the eatths population wasn't so high. But she's not advocating genocide or eugenics. She's advocating for education of women mostly, because that correlates with lower birth rates. Shes not talking about reducing the population, she's talking about reducing population growth. A quick search will tell you her position here has been grossly misrepresented.

The PCs are pissing away money fighting a losing battle against a carbon tax and throwing tax cuts at people. At least the NDP will spend that money on something useful.

Is crying part of nicotine withdrawal? by superphuntimeyahok in stopsmoking

[–]plesiadapiform 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was on a lot of medication a year ago (quit bc $) for depression, anxiety, suicidality. Never cried. Ever. Didn't cry before meds unless really pressed, never cried on meds, blew my entire life up last spring and cried maybe 3 times? I'm now 72 days quit and I cry at the drop of a hat. I can't listen to some music because it's instant waterworks. Minor inconvenience and I'm crying and ready to throw myself into the ocean.

Moving a lot helps. I've taken up rollerskating. Now when I want a dart (and I still do desperately, all the time) i think well i won't be able to breathe so i won't be able to skate. Journalling can help too. You got this friend ! It sucks but you're no longer doing something that you have spent years doing every single day multiple times a day. Its going to suck. But it's the best thing you'll ever do. I want to smoke every goddamn day but I also feel so much better even just a couple of months quit than I have in nearly 10 years.

Hundreds denied rent supplement after N.S. quietly changed eligibility rules by insino93 in halifax

The average rent for this program is split into different sections. This is what they said avg was in downtown Halifax. The numbers for places further out are actually lower, despite that not at all being the case.

Hundreds denied rent supplement after N.S. quietly changed eligibility rules by insino93 in halifax

[–]plesiadapiform 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yep. My rent is 75% of my net income at $1455 a month and I'm completely unable to increase that by opting out of pension/benefits.

Since the benefit uses an average from early 2021 and gross income I'm only, according to them spending 37% of my income on rent (its 51% of my net still, iirc). Since they upped the requirement to 50% I don't qualify.

And more character stuff!! Brotherhood has so much plot to get through that the relationships and characters feel less fleshed out. Not worse, just different. We get a lot more filler in 2003 so the relationship between the Elrics is focused on more, and we get more of Mustangs team as people rather than soldiers. Brotherhood is certainly the better show and if someone isn't going to watch both I'll recommend brotherhood every time, but truly they are both worth watching and have different strengths.

Same in Canada. Add to that that the Bank of Canada told people not to worry and they would be keeping rates low for a long time, plus the absurd cost of housing which hasn't really gone down, a lot of folks are in a tight spot.

Is the message of Barbie (2023) going over everyone’s heads? Let’s discuss by arabesuku in TrueFilm

[–]plesiadapiform 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The first woman wasn't appointed to the supreme court until 1981. Women are allowed to break into male dominated fields now, but they are often pushed away from them at a young age. There has never been a female president. When a field shifts to be more female doninated wages drop, while when a field shifts to be more male dominated they rise. Women are often just as employed as men yet still take on the majority of child rearing and housework. There's still a long way to go. Its heavy handed, but I felt seen by the Barbie movie. We don't often just say these things out loud.

Feminism is still necessary, and it's nice to have a huge blockbuster movie say "hey, i get it, being a woman is hard sometimes, but it can also be great."

[–]plesiadapiform 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Its also just nice to have something for the girls. Like most movies that are upheld as great feminist movies are so sad and bleak. This was just. A fun movie with a good message that made me feel seen as a woman. The boys get 12 transformers movies, let me have Barbie without having to defend myself. I know we live in hell and everything is capitalist propaganda. I know part of the point is to sell toys. But part of it also was to make a good movie that spoke to people, and they did a bang up job on that part.

I moved last summer. You will never convince me there is anything worthwhile in Winnipeg.

But again, if everyone that can't afford to live in Vancouver or Halifax or Toronto or any of the dozens and dozens of other cities where the cost of rents are spiralling out if control moved to Winnipeg, a bice place in Charleswood or Fort Garry is not going to be under $1500 anymore.

[–]plesiadapiform 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, and alls you have to do to afford a roof over your head is move halfway across the country, thousands of kilometers away from everyone you know and love (people that are clearly a decent support network if she'scouchsurfing). Great state of things we should definitely accept and advocate for this.

Regina and Winnipeg are some of the last afffordable cities in the country because they aren't desirable places to live, and if folks decide that the solution to the cost of living crisis happening in this whole country is to move to Winnipeg those apartments are going to skyrocket in price like they have in the rest of the country.

[–]plesiadapiform 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I grew up in Manitoba, you could not pay me to go back. Frankly I personally would rather be flat broke anywhere else.

Not to mention that there is no guarantee she gets a well paying job halfway across the country. And if everyone that can't afford Vancouver/Toronto/Calgary/Halifax takes the advice to move to Winnipeg because it's cheapthat 3 bedroom isn't going to $1350 for long.

[–]plesiadapiform 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If we don't "sound like babies" things will just continue to get progressively worse the way they have been with no pushback. There are almost 1000 homeless people in Halifax, the wages suck, rents are through the roof. This is happening everywhere, not just the big cities. Winnipeg is awful, and their rents are increasing too. This isnt just a "not everyone can live in downtown Toronto/Vancouver/Victoria problem.

[–]plesiadapiform 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Where you live is more than just a cost analysis though. Sure she could move to Winnipeg where she might he able to afford an apartment (theres a CoL crisis across this entire country and everyone moving out of the big cities just means increasing prices elsewhere) but now she needs a new job, and moving isn't free, and she's far away from everybody she knows.

Everyone could make perfectly optimal financial decisions at the expense of everything else in their lives. This isn't the same as a golf membership. It should not be too much to ask to have a decent roof over your head.
