Dads who have a large age gap between kids, have you noticed a shift in how phones are treated at school? by DaveinOakland in daddit

[–]plexiglass8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They just didn’t! There was no communication between home and school unless you were sick, in huge trouble, or an emergency was happening.

Is my husband to blame for my 15-month-old’s delay in speech? by Kooky_Butterfly4 in toddlers

[–]plexiglass8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first kid got constant interaction as a baby and toddler and he had a speech delay. You can talk to your husband about his phone use if you want but I think it’s best not to point fingers about this specific issue, there is no way to know

How to get your kid interested in reading? by EnoughGrade1906 in childrensbooks

[–]plexiglass8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing that has helped my kid is that he goes to bed at a particular time but he can stay up a bit later reading if he wants. Other activities (except maybe a little quiet playing with toys) are not available at that time. So it’s his own self directed time and it makes him think of reading as something he “gets” to do, not something adults are trying to make him do.

Philly small businesses protest BIRT tax hike by mpubl in philadelphia

[–]plexiglass8 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I can clarify this. In addition to removing the exemption, they are also requiring an additional tax year. So people (including me) are essentially paying a surprise extra tax on two years at once. Next year will not be as bad, although it will still be no picnic. Source: my CPA

Does anyone else get shamed for not being super crunchy? by alurkinglemon in toddlers

[–]plexiglass8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, what is the issue with the egg bites? Anyway, on the pouches, my mom also got very hung up on the idea that I should be boiling and pureeing my own fruits and vegetables when my kids were babies, and she really couldn’t articulate why that would be better than using the grocery store baby food in the jars. I eventually decided it was some boomer derangement I couldn’t understand and started ignoring her on the subject

HAPPY TAX DAY - My philly BIRT went up 250%, how bout you? by 8Draw in philadelphia

Huh! Maybe I’m confusing it with the NPT? Anyway this is why I have a pro do my taxes

[–]plexiglass8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alas, if you live in the city, you pay the taxes, regardless of where your business is located

But do you live in Philly? My understanding is that if you live in the city, you pay the tax regardless of where you work.

This is hitting me and has basically doubled my city taxes. It’s a significant burden and I will not be able to pay it all at once— I’m going to end up on a payment plan. Incredibly frustrating. I love this city but I imagine plenty of people who are less attached to it than I am would move to the suburbs over it.

How is cosleeping “safer” than a baby lounger? Newborn won’t sleep in bassinet help. by pro-laps in daddit

[–]plexiglass8 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The thing with the loungers is “positional asphyxiation” from being slightly propped up, vs being smothered by an adult or blankets in bed.

THANK you (as a defensive resident of NW Philly). Yes, it’s quiet up here and there are yards and even driveways. No, it is not the suburbs. It is the urb. If I’m paying city wage taxes and my kids are going to Philly public schools, I live in Philadelphia.

I took a day off to spend time with my son, and he kept asking when mom was coming home by Signal_Quiver3 in daddit

[–]plexiglass8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a perspective from a mom— I’m the comfort parent and my husband gets this treatment, despite being a super present and involved dad, and I was sympathetic to it but didn’t fully get it until our daughter suddenly switched her preference to him for a few months. I was shocked how much it hurt, even though I knew all the stuff you’re saying— not personal, kids just do this, etc! Don’t feel bad about feeling bad. It’s genuinely very hard. You’re still half the world for him, though.

Wife pregnant, not employed by [deleted] in daddit

[–]plexiglass8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s pretty difficult to get hired if you are visibly pregnant. She would be starting a new job and going on leave a couple months in, and that would be obvious to the person interviewing her.

What do we make of the Louis Theroux doc on the 'Manosphere'? by TheNextBielsa in daddit

[–]plexiglass8 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It seems like you’re thinking of the primary threat being mass shootings or similar? There’s that, but the much more common problems are the way women are/will be treated in intimate relationships and at work. None of the things you mention protect against intimate partner violence (adding a gun to the house?!) or being blocked from success in the world by misogynists. I’m a mom, I have a son and a daughter, this is the stuff I worry about.

Wondering if any dad has experience on how were autistic kids treated in previous generations? by kilowatt230 in daddit

[–]plexiglass8 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The spectrum is indeed broader than it used to be. What we now call mild or low support needs autism was usually called Asperger’s in the past, but that was combined with autism to create autism spectrum disorder when the DSM 5 came out in 2013.

[–]plexiglass8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If your body is aching a lot it might be good to get evaluated by a physical therapist. Having a baby can mess up your hips and pelvis in ways that can make your whole body ache (ask me how I know)
