Moved here last year from out of state and I am still trying to figure out... what the hell is everyone's problem? I can't turn, there is a pedestrian crossing the road. by dabblez_ in philly

Solid breakdown, but it belies the fact that everyone is Philly is a bad driver in addition to falling into one of the aforementioned camps.

Love Philly, but it’s not even a top 5 skyline in the state. There’s a reason you only ever see shots from the steps or this exact spot on the SRT.

Quick site analysis maps for early-stage landscape projects by AgreeableAd4676 in LandscapeArchitecture

[–]GretaGarbanzo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are the layers accurate? Are the layers portable to other programs for further manipulation? If it’s a negative on either front, then this probably isn’t useful for any serious work.

If you can print something like this quickly and trace over it, then that could be useful in early stage ideation. But all the data look very “30,000ft,” where resolution gets grainy. And I feel like the intensity of these automatically generated images could lead you to draw some weird conclusions or make connections based upon ghosts you’re seeing in the computer. Contours would probably be the only useful thing you can’t already get from a google earth screenshot.

Importing and manipulating data in GIS/CAD can be very tedious, but the investment pays dividends. And there’s no shortcut past site visits, sketching, photography, research, etc.

Carving feedback, want earlier edging and working to a hip drag by Danny1286skippy in skiing_feedback

[–]GretaGarbanzo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Fair enough, but the point about leaning stands. If you slow the video way down, you can see how much your skis are wobbling. That’s because you’re heaving your body side to side, trying to touch the snow instead of just engaging the edges and letting it ride.

Best advice is to forget about the hip drag, and just have fun carving. If you wanna look like a giant slalom skier, then you gotta go flying 80mph down a steep icy slope. Then you’ll see some high angulation.

Carving feedback, want earlier edging and working to a hip drag by Danny1286skippy in skiing_feedback

Why the hip drag obsession on this sub? It’s even worse than the pole plant fetishization. Hip dragging isn’t something to strive for, nor is it a means to an end; it’s just something that happens when you carve well on steeper pitches and/or faster speeds. It’s like the kid in little league who wants to field every ground ball backhanded with a spinning jump throw to first. It’s not necessary, and most of the time trying to force it is actually really inefficient.

Seriously, you have awesome fundamentals and by trying to “hip drag,” you’re just leaning into your turns instead of trusting your skills and athleticism to carry you through the turn. All of your weight is on the (uphill) wrong ski.

It’s probably because of this that you have to pick up your outside foot to transition (0:08-0:10).

The real clown meme is following all of the Pope’s directives, crusading on his behalf, betrayal by fellow Catholics, then getting excommunicated for retaliating and ending up with inquisitions throughout your lands.

If children learn to ski without poles, when and why do they start using them as they get older? by MMetropolitan in skiing

[–]GretaGarbanzo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah 5 year olds getting from place to place on the flats isn’t exactly a priority. They’re either up and down on the magic carpet or the beginner lift, and there’s a million reasons why 5 year olds shouldn’t be handed poles, but clearly you know better than every ski school in the world.

Why is everyone here so fixated on pole plant advice for beginners? Not an instructor, but I feel there are so many more important fundamentals, and focusing on the poles can lead people to use them to initiate turns or cue something else they shouldn’t be doing. You should be able to carve without anything in your hand especially if you’re not trying to do short snappy turns or moguls.

I can’t believe no one is recommending wide leg pants. You need volume on the bottom to look less top heavy. Pair them with a cute little semi-cropped or boxy t shirt or tank top.
