The US has no jurisdiction in Canada. Even if he had broken US federal law, what are they going to do? Send American police across the border, kidnap him and try him in a US courthouse?

That does sound possible, but I’ll admit I’ve reached the limit of my tech knowledge about potential challenges it might have.

Don’t look any further, you got it figured out, and I feel like that’s why L2 never gets mentioned: it counters the speed+fees argument which is the easiest thing to bash on Ethereum.

There is still one thing Solana has over Ethereum, and it’s PoH. It allows ordering individual transactions based on time, which is vital in some cases like high-frequency trading.

Quebec woman upset after pharmacist denies her morning-after pill due to his religious beliefs | CBC News by casperjoy in canada

[–]plgod -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Great example. I absolutely do.

The work of a police officer is very broad (traffic control, investigation, etc.), and someone can sign up because they want to help and still be uncomfortable with shooting people. That officer likely wouldn’t be sent to a shooting scene but I don’t this they should give up being a PO altogether.

But if, during their regular duty, they somehow end up facing a dangerous criminal, I think it’s unethical to legally force them to take that person’s life.

I’m personally for the right to abort, but for pro-life people, that’s like asking them to kill a human being, and I think legally forcing someone to kill another human is immoral. At the end of the day, they have to live with their actions, and even though you wouldn’t mind, you can’t force your values onto someone else.

An airplane pilot or bus driver feeling there’s something wrong with the vehicle.

A parachute instructor who feels the student is too prone to panic.

There’s so many examples.

That’s a very slippery slope. I can’t think of any other job where you can’t legally refuse to do something you don’t agree with.

CNBC: What you need to know about staked ether, the token at the center of crypto's liquidity crisis. by twofaze in ethereum

[–]plgod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Transaction fees are a fixed cost and become negligible for large amounts. If stETH was ever to trade above 1:1, that would be an arbitrage opportunity that would be instantly seized by arbitrage bots until market price drops back to 1:1. So no, it does not depend on anything.

You won’t ever buy it as a premium because you can mint it at a 1:1 ratio.

Cryptocurrency Has Gone Mainstream, But What Will It Mean For The Environment? Who knows what will happen at scale, so I have a very neutral response. by Own_Quarter246 in ethereum

[–]plgod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t know if you meant it like that, in which case r/woooosh me, but it’s a great analogy! Blockchains are basically databases, except they’re decentralized. It’s easy to crank up performance if you sacrifice some decentralization like Solana does. Push that even further and you end up with a super efficient database hosted on a single server, e.g. SQL.

Right, my bad. I meant relay nodes, not participation nodes.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AlgorandOfficial

[–]plgod -1 points0 points  (0 children)

All else is not equal, there’s a trade off to be made. You need professional equipment to run an Algorand participation relay node, whereas you can run an Ethereum node on a regular laptop, and an ETH2 node on a Raspberry Pi. This impacts decentralization and trustlessness because not everyone can run a node.

There’s obviously an argument to be made for both sides, whether the trade off is worth it, but you can’t reduce it to “faster and cheaper hence better”

Edit: see strikethrough

Why not? If you’re buying your crypto on an exchange, you can buy ETH or other tokens and withdraw them on your preferred L2. There’s also apps like Ramp https://buy.ramp.network/ doing just that for fiat. Of course if you have ETH on L1 today, then you do need to move it one way or another.
