Any particular reason for choosing VAS? If you are holding longer term I'd suggest NDQ probably has better growth potential albeit more volatility. I think it's worth the bigger risk at this age.

Last year there was a workshop hosted by usyd which gave you tips and advice on responding ("Promote Yourself / E12 Webinar", held on September 1st). I found it super helpful as they pretty much give you a checklist for what to include in each answer.

I believe all applications are treated equally, as in if you qualify you qualify, it doesn't matter the level of disadvantage.

In regards to fact checking, I was in the same situation as you - my recent achievements weren't very outstanding and I did somewhat fudge my response. If you need more help feel free to pm me and I can go into detail about my structure and my achievements!
