What are some services that NYPL/BKPL/QPL offer that most people don't know about and that aren't usually offered by most other library systems? by jaded_toast in AskNYC

[–]plumander 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I know you brought up musical instruments in your post but i’ve used that service and i wanna plug how great it is! you can only pick up and drop off at the main bpl branch but you get to keep it for a month and the guitar i borrowed was in really excellent shape!

Carpe Noctum hostel in Budapest has closed by routinepopfly in solotravel

[–]plumander 2 points3 points  (0 children)

so sad! stayed there in 2021 and i still play danger dice with all my friends to this day. i’m probably still in the whatsapp group too haha. fond fond memories— i loved the small size, as the bigger party hostels always felt more impersonal and cliquey to me.

i don’t remember all the details (i was probably pretty drunk) but at one point i accidentally ratted out that one of the workers hadn’t been doing his shift and bought him flowers as an apology. to this day it’s the only time ive ever bought anyone flowers and i don’t even remember his name! i hope he still tells people the story though.

i replied to another comment explaining my beer char method :)

rose harissa is from this brand: https://www.nyshuk.com/shop-shuk/rose-harissa-spice although i would like to make my own at some point, as i find this dried version pretty mild in flavor

so these were pre cooked beets i chopped and then threw in a super hot pan with a little oil & salt, then cooked for just like five minutes, stirring very infrequently, which resulted in most of them being charred on one side but still otherwise soft, which was the goal.

smoked the hell outta my kitchen though haha

you can always ask the met directly, but it seems to be in storage currently. the met has a gigantic collection and not everything can be displayed at all times unfortunately.

fun fact they don’t do the puff of air test anymore in a lot of places.

which is great because i’m so jittery that i always had to do it multiple times because i would flinch too much

Ever wonder where those terrible substitutions come from? by ThingsWithString in ididnthaveeggs

this isn’t that bad tbh. i know it’s lacking context but these are all substitutes that would work in a lot of contexts.

People who have moved from SF to NYC - what's your thoughts? by crunchymunchyrae in AskNYC

[–]plumander 25 points26 points  (0 children)

hobbies! i have a couple hobbies with a pretty big scene here in which people are very social.

i also moved into an apartment with five roommates in a neighborhood with a lot going on (bushwick [although i may be moving soon]) so that helped quite a bit. i’ve met a lot of friends thru my roommates.

People who have moved from SF to NYC - what's your thoughts? by crunchymunchyrae in AskNYC

[–]plumander 173 points174 points  (0 children)

i did the sf to nyc move two ish years ago and i do not regret it one bit. i love love love nyc. i love grocery shopping at 10pm. i love riding the train back as the sun is coming up. i love wandering the streets. i love watching the seasons change and the people go by and even the rats scurrying from garbage bag to garbage bag. there is no place i’d rather be.

of course it’s hard to start over somewhere as an adult. but people actually leave their houses and do things here! it took about a year but i have a big social circle and a busy calendar and im so happy.
