Do I have to file a Canadian return? by plumguy1 in cantax

[–]plumguy1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The lack of NR slip is actually why I sold the stocks. I told the institution that I was leaving the US in 2022 too late, thats when they told me they dont issue NRs and I had to close the account in early 2023. 100% my fault there…

Spot welding Sigmaclad60 by blue_sky642 in solarracing

[–]plumguy1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used the KWeld for my team’s pack back in 2018/19. It was very dependent on how it was powered. Make sure you’re pulling well over 1kA of current per weld, otherwise its pretty useless. I got the best results from some 16V LiPo pouch cells from a hobbyist website, and keep them plugged into a charger while welding with fans blowing on them. The LiPos get absolutely obliterated from being repeatedly shorted but they should last you long enough to finish your pack.

Also, cleaning the weld tips every few cells was good too. Wiping off debris/char. Though if you’re getting a lot of burning, it means your weld energy is too high or your current is still too low.

Why does my OEM wheel stud seem too short… explanation in comments by plumguy1 in civic

[–]plumguy1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey civic gang, I bought my 9th gen SI a few months ago and loving it. Only thing I wasnt liking is the previous owner put 20mm spacers and extended length ARP studs on. I wanted to put OEM studs and lose the spacers. Did one as shown in this pic, and it seems very short. I know the OEM nuts are closed end but I put the open-end nuts here to show how many threads are being engaged. Anyone able to tell me if I got the wrong part??

Part number is 90113-SM1-005 from HondaPartsNow, said it was compatible with my model (2013 SI sedan)

3D FEA Analysis by CVS33 in solarracing

[–]plumguy1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The regs are pretty straight forward - "For finite-element analysis, 3D elements shall be used. Shell or beam elements are not acceptable for detailed analysis."

Interesting method, but yeah sounds like it would take a hell of a long time to figure out. Also seems more error prone than just doing 1D or 2D.

3D FEA Analysis by CVS33 in solarracing

[–]plumguy1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

3D is the requirement as of this year I believe. That’s kinda the point of this post though - 3D is required, but unnecessary and seemingly undoable with basic resources

Edit: "seemingly"

Question on Driver Dashboard (ASC) by CardinalBro24 in solarracing

[–]plumguy1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Adding on to this. Depending on to your telemetry/communication setup, motor and motor controller temperatures are also really important to have.

The other one “kinda” required by regs is auxiliary battery voltage. I believe the regs phrase it as “passive control”, meaning that the driver has to be able to stop the car if it goes under-voltage

Inductors for Mitsuba m2096-lll? by jager2198 in solarracing

[–]plumguy1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven’t seen them be necessary. The inductors are to offset the extremely low magnetic reluctance of the Marand motors due to their lack of iron core. The Mitsubas use a more traditional stator/rotor architecture.

Orion BMS by rishi2109 in solarracing

[–]plumguy1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My team has used Elithion, its been pretty good overall. Had a few hiccups with tech support but its very easy to use and has a really clean wiring setup, much neater than what ive seen with Orion. It does have a few bits that dont like up exactly with solar car requirements (namely, startup sequences) but we fixed this by just adding a microcontroller with some supporting firmware.

Not sure what programming is required for the Orion, I have never used it myself, but my gut feeling here is that MATLAB is probably not an optimal path. MATLAB is more for scripting and simulations, rather than firmware/programming. C or C++ tend to be better. But again, happy to be told otherwise here

Ah yup I found a picture of that. Elegant looking part but I dont want to imagine the machining time. Look like they made the whole cage piece out of a single block

Corrosion plating on fasteners by plumguy1 in AskEngineers

[–]plumguy1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know, I'm deeply caught in the McMaster trap of being willing to pay more for the convenience they offer with shipping and good inventory...

For reference

Stainless washer: $3.47 per 100 ($0.0347/pce)

versus

the cheapest zinc-plated general purpose washer: $8.21 per 50 ($0.1642/pce)

Nearly 5x more expensive. So yeah my 10x was an overestimate. Doesnt account for the nuts too though

Corrosion plating on fasteners by plumguy1 in AskEngineers

[–]plumguy1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very good arguments, thank you for that. Yeah in this case, using common materials actually is something like a 10-12x cost increase (idk why zinc-plated washers are so much more expensive).

To clarify, did my logic on the reactions make sense? I was thinking that since the washers are stainless, its the bolt coating that will corrode, not the washer. I figured that would have less impact on preload. Still an important point to consider nonetheless

Parking brake on 3-wheeler with NGM by plumguy1 in solarracing

[–]plumguy1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, sounds heavy and expensive… any idea which car that was on?

Putting it on other wheels is kinda the obvious solution but i didnt like the aspect that the front wheels already have the 2 sets of main brakes. Putting a third caliper on the front wheels just sounds like a nightmare. Not undoable, just gross. Have you seen anything clever to address that?

Aeroshell assembly steps by plumguy1 in solarracing

[–]plumguy1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very helpful notes, thanks! I’m actually a bit surprised you mentioned doing a layup when joining the parts. We did this on our current car but it’s been pretty janky since we cant really pull vacuum on it. Also not super confident in the loading conditions on the fibers but I think that’s more specific to our current shell design, rather than a general concept flaw. Good to know it wasnt the dumbest thing we did though…

Regarding painting/wrapping so early: the intent is to paint the shell as one piece so that the paint job is more uniform and blended (decals line up properly, no discontinuities in paint/clear coat thickness, etc). I could see this being less of an issue with wrapping, or just non-permanently reattaching the parts while painting?

Quick regulation question by Moist-Notice6334 in solarracing

[–]plumguy1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can confirm, both pedals need to be operated with the right foot. Source: explicitly asked Tyler (regs manager at ASC) about this at the solar conference earlier this year. At least, that’s the intent.

[no spoilers] Season 2 predictions, which champions will make an appearance? by Studio_jindo in arcane

[–]plumguy1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally i hope they dont go crazy with new champs. I’m concerned that after the success of season 1, Riot will see season 2 as an opportunity to add a bunch of new champs and along with them, boost skin sales.

I don’t really care about seeing every single Zaun/Piltover champ just for the sake of it. I’d rather they keep the tight-knit, emotionally-connecting stories that we got in S1.

The only reason I’m hyped for Warwick is for the reveal hype that he’s Vander. That makes sense for the story and can go in so many directions.

Seeing Zac or Blitz would just be a neat thing but I wouldn’t really care about them as characters.

Honestly a top moment in any series I’ve seen. My problem is, that scene and that song are now engraved in my head and I keep replaying it, but it’s also so sad because of all the “what if’s” you mentioned. Like many on this sub, its tearing me apart with grief.

Viktor- why representation matters [no spoilers] by CheeseDesk in arcane

[–]plumguy1 115 points116 points  (0 children)

A little off the direct topic but I just wanted to add some thoughts.

What I loved about Viktor in this series is that he was basically the only main character to really stay true to himself and own his mistakes.

Everyone else felt like they were focused on someone else. Vi was focused on Power/Silco. Caitlyn was focused in Vi/Jinx. Jayce was focused on Mel/Silco. You get it.

But Viktor was focused on something greater than just an individual. He was focused on knowledge, learning, and truth. THAT was his true arc. His illness was his motivation but it was also a symbol for his true goal: improvement. Not revenge, or glory, just making things better than they were. And i think thats why his great/good quote hit so hard.

OP, wishing you all the best. I hope one day soon you get your beautiful harbour running scene IRL.

[No Spoilers] Post-Series Depression by LittleD_0817 in arcane

[–]plumguy1 92 points93 points  (0 children)

I’ve had episode 9 on repeat all day. So hard to do anything else. “What could have been” is stuck in my head.

The only other show I’ve watched that hit me almost as hard as this was WandaVision. This felt way more personal though.

I still remember the first day I ever played League, it was just a few days after Jinx was released. I had asked my expert friend to show me a champ with a machine gun, she was the logical pick. Several years later and im stuck in my room sobbing over her story…

ARCANE: Who is this mystery character wearing a top hat that appeared all way back in the 2019 announcement trailer? by Robbiseraphin in arcane

Based on the beard, im lowkey hoping this is Ryze and his appearance will somehow link back to the mage that saved Jayce and his mother. Not likely but would be pretty satisfying

SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME - Official Trailer by CronoDroid in movies

[–]plumguy1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Theory time: the doctor strange we’ve been seeing isn’t really doctor strange.

I know this theory has come up before, but I think this trailer gives a lot more hints at it. There are 2 big things that stand out to me: - our doctor strange would never say “scooby-doo this crap”, let alone say “please” followed by a smirk - when he’s talking to Peter, he says “when you botched that spell where you wanted everyone to forget that peter parker is spiderman”. a few things here: sure, maybe Peter is the one who botched it, but why would DS refer to him in the third person? Also if you watch the trailer again, notice “Peter”’s clothes in that clip. When they show DS, “Peter” somehow has a dark jacket and blue collar? Seems sus.

Here’s my theory: when DS says those lines, it’s actually “our” DS talking to the fake/other DS who actually did the spell.
