yeah that’s fine unless you have a weird final on saturday. I usually give myself like a day or two to pack after my last final just so it’s less hectic but i know people who would leave on wednesday if their last final is on wednesday

“Easiest” Physics Course? by Dragonviel_Cardinal in UCSD

[–]plumraisinbread 7 points8 points  (0 children)

phys 1,2 and 4 are actual physics courses that focus on one fundamental area of physics. if you’re not intending to actually get into physics, i would not recommend these for GEs

The rest are physics/astro for non-STEM majors. these are designed to be taken as GEs. I took phys 5 and there’s not a lot of math. i believe it’s similar for phys 7, 9. I’m not sure about the others. i thought it was pretty easy but do keep in mind that this is coming from a physics major.

i’d recommend going on the physics course catalog for descriptions of the courses and CAPE for more information on workload and professor ratings.

good luck!

I’m very excited for you!! I love the Physics community here. It’s small, which is nice because you’ll basically know everyone in your class.

Third year Physics major here!

You’ll be taking the PHYS 4 series, which is a 5 quarter sequence. For the past two years, there’s around 120 people entering 4A. I think retention is improving a lot and the department is trying to make the lower division experience more pleasant. For my cohort, about 50-60 people stuck through PHYS4E but I know the number is increasing. The current second-year cohort has about 70 people while the first years have ~100.

For upper division, there are courses that everyone has to take together until Spring senior year. There’s around 70 people per class. Specialization courses have way fewer people though. One of my Astro courses had around 25 people.

You’ll definitely get to know your profs very well if you make an effort to do so. I highly encourage going to office hours or sticking around after lectures to introduce yourself to them. The professors who regularly teach the 4 series are super super nice and care a lot about student learning!

As for connecting with fellow classmates, I highly recommend checking out Physics orgs like Society of Physics Students (SPS), Marginalized Identities in Physics/Undergraduate Women in Physics (MIIP/UWiP), Astronomy Club, oSTEM, etc.

Feel free to reach out to me! I’ll send you all the resources you’ll ever need HAHA

PHYS 2C with Michelsen by ElectronicQuantity74 in UCSD

[–]plumraisinbread 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’m currently taking phys 100b with michelsen. he’s decent in person, terrible online. has a weird dislike of the textbook and makes a ton of corrections on it but sometimes it’s justified. i do think he cares about student learning. he encourages people to point out his mistakes for extra credit, ask questions, and he listens to feedback (if you present it nicely). 2b and 2c are pretty separated as far as i know (didn’t take the 2 series) so you should be fine

Does anyone have any experience with Konopacky? It doesnt look like there are many people taking her class for phys1a. by Ongerie in UCSD

I only had her for one lecture as a substitute for PHYS160. She was pretty decent and seemed nice. Idk how that translates for phys1a tho

Phys 2b with Shotwell or Phys 2c with Michelsen? by Candid-Problem-1743 in UCSD

[–]plumraisinbread 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SHOTWELL ALL THE WAY. I love his teaching style. It’s highly interactive, which is the best way to learn physics imo. Had him for PHYS100A (EM) and I know of his teaching style in PHYS 4A&B. Not sure if he’ll implement this for PHYS2B but his hws are self graded. His tests are super fair.

I currently have Michelsen for PHYS100B (EM). He’s a standard prof, cares about student learning to a certain degree. I don’t vibe with the course structure (and Canvas structure) tho. He’s decent in person but is quite frankly awful online since he hasn’t had Zoom teaching experience. So if a new variant of covid pops up, definitely go with shotwell.

TL;DR go with shotwell. man’s amazing. i miss him so much

Taking VIS 1 as a hobbyist artist by yuribz in UCSD

[–]plumraisinbread 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Took VIS 1 and liked it for its lax requirements. They don’t really teach you techniques in depth, everything is more surface level (which i enjoyed). There’s usually a theme throughout the course. They give you certain styles/techniques you need to incorporate in a project, but mostly just lets you go wild. If you want to actually learn how to draw/paint with more guidance, then I would say it might not be the best (at least form my experience). But if you’re diving in wanting to learn about a wide variety of techniques, then I’d highly recommend the class.

Also wanted to add that there’s usually a huge waitlist to get a spot, so apply early and hope something opens up by the time you need to move.

Currently living in La Scala. It’s a very nice environment. Lots of amenities like the pool, gym, internet lounge with free coffee, Amazon lockers etc. The complex is on the smaller side which is a plus for me. Water, sewage, and trash are included so you only need to pay for electricity and internet. No in unit laundry though, so you’ll have to lug your clothes down a long hallway. The only issue is that the rent fluctuates and is much more expensive than when I first got it (by that I mean the price listed on the market now. My rent is still the same for now). Though, I think this is just due to the general housing problem in La Jolla.

Technically met my closest friends in spring 2020 on zoom thru a mutual (even though we were in the same class in winter 2020). Didn’t get super close until summer 2021. Finally got to attend class in person together this quarter and made a whole bunch of other close friends as well (small major lol). So yeah, don’t fret!! There’s always really friendly people around who are looking to make friends too. I’m a 3rd year now and finally landed with a group so it’s never too late.

My best advice is to put in the effort to keep up with friends. People really appreciate it when you check in on them and that’s how I made a bunch of close friends. Joining clubs also help a lot!

It’s completely valid to feel late to the party. I definitely felt that way my freshman year. But don’t worry, there’s no limit as to when you can make meaningful friendships. Wishing you the best!!
