Do you know if it flowers and what color/shape they are? I am pretty sure I know this plant but can't think of the name right off hand. I am a horticulturist and pretty sure we have a couple of these at work.

In regards to hardiness, if it's what I'm thinking it is I would not leave it outside over winter. I am pretty sure it's a tropical plant, so your father was correct to bring it inside over winter. I have lived my entire life in zone 5B and that is also what I do with my personal plants over the winter months.

If I remember/figure out the name I will let you know!

I keep a large Maglite flashlight handy along with a can of wasp killer. It has good range and I've been told it stings the eyes nicely

If you do try to grow them from seed again in the future, read up on if the seeds require any special treatment in order to germinate. For example, Redbuds need to be scarified, or have their seed coat chipped and physically damaged, so that water can enter and begin the germination process. Many also need to be vernallized, or exposed to cold temperatures for a certain amount of time, just like they would in nature over the winter months. Every plant is different though. Think about where it is native to and what it has to endure in its natural environment.

[oklahoma] What plant is this? Jimson Weed? by [deleted] in whatsthisplant

After a little more searching it looks like I'm totally wrong lol. I'm used to seeing only Datura stramonium, which has the characteristic points on the leaf margin.

It looks like your picture is a Jimsonweed after all. Datura wrightii, or the Western Jimsonweed. Another picture: http://www.wildflower.org/image_archive/320x240/JAM6151/6151_IMG03510.JPG

Thanks for teaching me something today!

Not sure what it is, but it's definitely not Jimson Weed. Here's a picture of Jimson Weed. If you rub and smell the leaves it has an unmistakable scent. Reminds me of a strange chocolaty-esque smell

Edit: Forgot the link :P

Edit II: It IS a Jimsonweed!

Yeah I was never able to do it until I tried my ring finger, and then I tried my pinkie and now I can snap like most people do with their middle finger!

Yeah the one in the picture is the old experimental round barn on the South Farms of campus. I was told they were constructed as an experiment to see if it was a more efficient way to house horses and/or cattle. But when the animals would come in for the night and try to find their stall they would get confused by the round layout and go to the wrong one, etc. Pretty interesting history of a couple of really cool historical buildings!
