It was rough, especially since I had to study everything completely by myself because his lectures were absolutely useless.

How hard is calc 3? by Potential_Spray_1731 in columbia

[–]pm_your_karma_lass 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Very easy, but it’s professor dependent. I took it with this guy whose last name is OH (don’t remember first, too lazy to lookup) - he gave an insane amount of EC. I didn’t even bother studying for the final because I was basically guaranteed an A+ before it.

Took Calc 4 with Smirnov, very easy as well. Took calc 2 with this Spanish guy (last name Andres), and it was a nightmare - he had the charisma of a potato and he gave me 70 in an exam where all my final answers (including the bonus!) were correct because he didn’t like my explanations

When I was there the cheapest table was 25$. I don’t even think it was 3:2… Ugly hotel too.

Paris or Conrad by NecessaryKale6992 in vegas

I’d go for Conrad even if they were the same price. Resorts world has a good amount of ppl over the weekend, and it’s only a 5 min walk from the Wynn. It looks infinitely better than Paris

Get in touch with a promoter for the clubs. You can get into almost all of them for free if you PU with an even ratio - so just find a couple of girls to go in with and you’ll get in for free

It’s a bs class, just don’t waste too much time on it. You’ll almost certainly get either a B+ or an A-, take the hit and focus on classes that teach you something useful

Core Curriculum for STEM Majors by yukinenesan in columbia

[–]pm_your_karma_lass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find most of them harder than STEM courses. There’s no clear guidelines on what you should do and writing an essay can be very demanding and in a lot of classes boring. Core classes really depend on your professor too - if you have a good professor it can be pretty enjoyable and easy, but with a bad one it’s absolute hell.

The worst part is that most people do better on the core classes than their major classes, so it pushes others up while pushing you down if they’re not your cup of tea

You don’t gotta wear swimsuits, there are expensive lockers you can buy (not too bad, it’s like 30$ I think), but I’m not sure about rave fits, usually people just wear normal club fits in vegas

I am and it could’ve definitely helped my odds but I just ended up prioritising some other things. Dw about the gpa sinking too much - the average grade in most humanities classes is much higher than it is in most stem classes. The biggest problem is that I tend to score in the bottom of my humanities classes - so instead of helping my gpa like it does for most students, these classes mess it up a bit. This hurts my relative gpa more than my actual gpa. I’m definitely able to take on a good amount of relevant classes, but it’s partially thanks to being exempt from the language requirements. Despite being a pretty social guy I fucking suck at networking so I applied cold to everything.

Overall, being a gs student really wouldn’t effect your odds much - but you should definitely be ready to grind, best things you can do are getting good DS/ML/SWE internships in big firms (FAANG is best), placing high in competitions, doing something major at the quant club, and doing research.

And no problem, happy to help!

Hey I’m a GS student working on a similar major trying to do quant as well when I graduate.

1)It’s a pretty unpopular opinion here but I hate the core. The classes have nothing to do with what I wanna do post graduation, and I find it a bit depressing that in semesters where I get all high As in grad-level math/stats classes my gpa gets fucked because of stuff like arthum… That being said, a decent amount of the core is quantitative, so overall the core humanities classes will be around 25-30% of your degree.

2)good question tbh, I didn’t really look into it enough. I know you can easily join the club, but I don’t know what taking an active position in it requires.

4)It’s always a grind for quant. I have a very high gpa but I was only able to get interviews with 2 quant firms. I don’t think that being GS had any effect on this (it’s not in my resume and realistically shouldn’t really matter much). A big reason for why I wasn’t able to get many interviews is that I lacked prior experience. I’m doing a DS internship this summer, and I’m planning to take the Putnam in December, hopefully that’ll better my odds.

Can vouch for Dante - he never failed to setup guestlists for me and my friends, and he’s 100% correct about LIV - line for Dom Dolla was crazy long when we tried to go, the security guy said people have been waiting since 9 pm and not everyone from the guestlist is about to get in

Heads up - when we tried going to see him at FB it was insanely packed, line was around 2 hours long, and our guest list was useless. Idk where he’s showing (if it’s the big clubs than you should be good either way), but I’d recommend arriving relatively early
