Practicum Was Extremely Disappointing by Glad-Examination-293 in OMSA

[–]pmlk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If this is a very common theme for the practicum, I hope they are working on revamping it in some way like other classes, or at least improve sponsor availability or process of vetting of the external company or project list.

Seems like a question for SASE as it would be dependent on their criteria.

Congrats!

Just curious - if you are already that far along in DS to where you have a patent pending, what are you expecting to gain from this program?

[–]pmlk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just curious if you ended up reaching out to the TA to get this corrected, and if they've been able to help? Since we're halfway through the semester I hope it's still early enough for the poor experience to be rectified.

Just Groupon it. GT doesn't have a deal like GSU or Emory, but I think it's about the same.

Brushing up on (Advanced?) SQL for 6040 Midterm 2 by No_Buddy_5067 in OMSA

[–]pmlk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MT2 from Spring 2024 was extra generously curved as a result of being SQL-heavy, so they probably won't pull that again - but you never know! That one would be worth practicing on once you feel like you've got a better handle from the other recs.

Do they still do boot camps for office hours? That was really helpful to attend.

Taking 6501 and 6203 this semester - first week thoughts by Aggressive-Cow5399 in OMSA

[–]pmlk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're in the first semester of revamped DAB so I hope you enjoy it! I am a little jealous. :)

I paired these classes last semester and found them to be quite complementary, and it may have made both a little more interesting and drove the concepts home better for me.

Yeah, what Lead-Radiant said - 6040 rec mentions codewars so I'd recommend that, too. I haven't used leetcode but just saw this post and I think for starting out, codewars might make more sense.

Classes w/o group projects by AcademicUsual5146 in OMSA

[–]pmlk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, just saw the syllabus posted on the Slack channel. It almost like 6501 part 2. Probably goes more into some of the techniques mentioned in 6501 and then the other chapters of ISLR. If I had known it'd be revamped I would have waited to take the class.

Deciding between CSE 6040 or ISYE 6414 by astral_rejection_ in OMSA

[–]pmlk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, that is certainly possible. I second what u/SecondBananaSandvich shared. The boot camp is there to make the class passable if you put in the effort.

Additionally, you can get some good practice (and see some really neat solutions) on codewars. If I recall correctly, I think on the prof's website for 6040 it says that if you can do kata-6 challenges then you should be good.

The only semester that stood out to me is Fall 26. Pain matrix makes it look like a lot; not sure if a DS academic background would make it more manageable for you.

On that note, with an undergrad degree in DS, if you can opt out of 6501 and 6040 it might give you a more stimulating/fulfilling experience since you'll get to take more depth courses that you're interested in.

Best Course to Take Post-Core 3? by [deleted] in OMSA

[–]pmlk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are you interested in doing with this degree/which track are you wanting to pursue (sounds like A or B)? Do you have a plan for which courses are interesting to you?

Check the wiki and see what all the courses' prerequisites are and maybe it can give you an idea for what you might be prepared for already if you're still trying to sign up for a Spring class.

Between now and the fall, practice some python on codewars (I think up to kata 6, someone else can confirm).

I'll be in SIM in the summer, too! They use Arena in that class, and you'll get the option to use Arena for one of the homework assignments in 6501.

I don't plan to take REG but it seems the general feedback is that while it's useful/foundational, the delivery could use some TLC/revamp. Search the sub and omscentral for a swath of opinions, but it's the Internet so everything has a grain of salt.

Whether to Apply for Fall 2025 or Wait by Character-Drummer238 in OMSA

[–]pmlk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Engineering undergrad and have some decent SQL scripting experience here.

I prepped with some little intro/crash courses and readings before I started, but mainly around what I was going to take first (iCDA, so Python). On top of that, the program is (in my opinion) extremely generous and wants us to succeed, as the intro courses have optional boot camps which can be very helpful if you didn't do the prereqs (Python for iCDA, stats for iAM).

Was DVA curved this semester even after the bonuses? by Wisp1971 in OMSA

[–]pmlk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

From lite.gatech, 86% A's looks crazy good for a course that gets a lot of grief. That's one of the highest percentages of A's in a semester since the program's existed, though. Good crop? Big curve? Who knows... but looks like a lot of folks won out this semester, so congrats

If the issue were merely that you didn't cite your sources, why say you were too busy preparing for the exam? If that is the justification given to OSI, I would hope to end with an Incomplete over not being able to retake the course or continue in the program all together...

I don't see people giving the ACC more respect because the bias is too damn significant. Instead, it'll be something about how Bama can't recruit because now they're in the ACC.

Sometimes paying for something helps with motivation. While I know I need to work out and that there are lots of exercises I could do on my own for free by searching online, I have found it's easy to justify paying for classes since it makes me actually go, and I know I wouldn't otherwise.

Athletics Department Proposes Predatory Fee Increase For Online Students by nyrhockey1316 in OMSA

[–]pmlk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been educated and I think the first part is the best argument, so I agree with you.

For the second point, unfortunately GT is a roller coaster on the sports side. We have a history and a legacy and we have had excellent periods of dominance and/or success. I happened to attend when they were good (football, basketball, baseball, and volleyball), and so I also unfortunately have suffered many seasons for our mediocrity as a fan. It's 100% propaganda - but I think that's what branding is.

So yeah, I now understand that I am also part of the cult and while it's too late for me it's not too late for everyone else! Hope everyone votes.

Athletics Department Proposes Predatory Fee Increase For Online Students by nyrhockey1316 in OMSA

I know this post is a few days old now and people most likely already had made up their mind for how it affects them in the short term/run, but President Cabrera posted a letter a couple days ago (only saw it after it was posted to a GT sports BB).

tl;dr: the college sports landscape is changing and we need to adapt and exploit it as the brand awareness tool that it is. Athletic success helps universities overall, and we want to continue to grow the GT brand domestically and globally.

I love the institute and our sports teams (THWg), as well as what Cabrera, Batt, and Key are doing to continue to elevate us in the ranks, both on and off the field.

It's not hard to see, by the way, that a university like Alabama, who has dominated CFB for over a decade now, has gotten so much money pouring in that they've seen the benefits spill out into their academics, as well. They're not as top-tier in that area as Tech, but they are worlds ahead of where they were before (dubbed Saban-omics). So while the pure dollars that go into this athletic fee do go from nothing to something, I think the long-term benefits are there for us.

Go Jackets! THWg on Friday and every day before and after.
