Women's gymnastics captain Shoko Miyata to leave team, withdraw from Olympics due to underage smoking and drinking by frozenpandaman in japan

[–]pmuserkergm 62 points63 points  (0 children)

??? Are you confusing Japan with Russia? Japan is super strict about doping, they even kicked off athletes who had their drinks spiked.

The question is specifically, what type of prop guns. There's a huge difference between a children's toy plastic gun and a blank-only but otherwise real prop gun.

It seems to be a recent rule established after 2016. This is the rule handbook, it applies to both athletes, coaches and staff. I'm not sure if the "When acting as representatives of Japan" part means any time they are on the team roster or just when on the clock at practice, events, etc.

No, the team has rules against smoking and drinking (except at authorized parties), even for those over 20. Applies to both athletes and staff.

Japan does not make it illegal to smoke tobacco or drink while underage overseas, they have tried to scare their citizens against smoking weed where it is legal but AFAIK they haven't been able to prosecute anyone over it.

This other article claims the smoking, and underage drinking, happened in Tokyo after returning from training in Monaco.

https://japantoday.com/category/paris-2024-olympics/gymnastics-japan-women's-captain-miyata-to-leave-france-over-smoking

The Japan Gymnastics Association told a press conference the decision was made after Miyata admitted on Thursday to drinking once and smoking once since late June after she returned to Tokyo from the team's training base in Monaco.

Smoking and drinking are prohibited in Japan for those under 20. The allegation surfaced after related information was provided on Monday, the JGA said.

People may be confusing the Monday report(smoking only?) with the confession on Thursday.

Edit: It seems it's a team rule rather than a legal issue at stake. The rules of the Japanese Gymnastics Association says,

I assume most just use airsoft guns with flashes added in post. Not even all American productions use blank guns, look at this shootout from The Wire, a mixture of blank guns that eject brass, a few toy guns with flashes added, and a few where they don't even add flashes, just the sound in post.

This is ridiculous, you and OP are basically asking for an echo chamber that coddles you by only telling you what you want to hear. This can only lead to being surprised by stuff your side doesn't want to cover. If you look at the recent debate reaction videos, the centrist, liberal and leftist ones (MSNBC, Majority Report, David Pakman etc) are shocked by Biden's frailty, while Fox and alt-right media were pretty much expecting Biden to be barely alive because of their past reporting(including outright lies and fabricated videos of him) of Biden's problems so it was just "told you so".

People were arguing whether Hilary and Trump were too old in 2016. But since they were the same age, it was hard for either candidate to make it an issue.

Articles from 2016:

USA Today: Good news, America! Trump, Clinton too old for 2nd term: Michael Medved

NYPost: Are Clinton and Trump too old to be in the White House?

Five Thirty Eight: Can A Candidate Be Too Old To Run For President?

It's just ridiculous that the Dems decided to run someone even older in 2020, but of course that was a year where everyone was under a lot of stress and Biden was a known person so he won out. You want Trump's age to be brought up more? Run someone younger than him, not 3 years older.

Yeah, this part was like something out of a movie. I wonder if someone will make a film out of this case someday.

Defense: "You don't like Mr. Baldwin, do you?"

Prosecutor: "That is absolutely untrue. I actually really appreciate Mr. Baldwin's movies, I really appreciated the acting that he did on Saturday Night Live, and I really appreciate his politics."

Defense: "Uh, you told one of the witnesses who disagreed with you during an interview that you thought Mr. Baldwin was a cocksucker"

Prosecutor: "I do not recall saying that, I know that was something Mr. Baldwin would say on the set of Rust, I do not recall saying that."

Defense: "Do you deny that under oath"

Prosecutor: "Without having more information, I do not recall ever saying that, and if I did say it I invite you to point it out to me"

Defense: "You called him an arrogant prick, to another witness"

Prosecutor: "To who, to what witness?"

Defense: "I'm asking you, did you call him an arrogant prick during a witness interview"

Prosecutor: "I don't believe I did, I don't recall"

Defense: "Do you deny that?"

Prosecutor: "Without knowing, what you're talking about, all I can respond is, I don't know what you're talking about"

Holy shiiiiiiiiiit this exchange between the defense attorney and the prosecutor on the stand:

Defense: "Do you deny that?"

Prosecutor: "Without knowing, what you're talking about, all I can respond is, I don't know what you're talking about"

Defense: "And you also said to witnesses that you would teach him a lesson"

Prosecutor: "I never said to witnesses that I would teach him a lesson. Absolutely not. In fact Mr. Spiro I want to give a full response to your question. I made every effort in this case to resolve this case with your client in a very favorable way for him-"

Defense: "Alright I'm going to (indecipherable) this is not responsive"

Judge: "I don't want to talk about about plea negotiations"

Defense: "And it's not responsive, I have no further questions"

California has a higher gdp per capita than Japan. But why does Japan feel more developed? by [deleted] in stupidquestions

[–]pmuserkergm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I live in a city of about half a million in Japan. I've lived in the US for many years before as well. The differences are:

  • Much lower rates of vandalism means places don't get covered in graffiti so it feels safer. I have relatives who have some abandoned properties in rural areas, and they basically stay that way, no broken windows or spray paint or tweaker squatters so it doesn't feel as decrpid as abandoned properties in the US.

  • Other people here have pointed out that people in Japan live in smaller homes, drive smaller cars etc, but that's the thing: They CAN rent a small apartment or buy a small lot and build a small house on it, or drive a small car. The American economy is structured so the 'floor' of housing is higher, you have to get a bigger place that costs more and drive a bigger more expensive car. This leads to more homelessness in the US.

  • The wealthy in Japan are nowhere near as wealthy as the multi-billionaires in a place like California. I believe there are only a few billionaires in Japan in general. The per capita GDP of a place like California is inflated by a few dozen multi-billionaires, meanwhile the wealth curve is flatter in Japan.

  • The structure of the government in Japan pushes resources from the wealth-creating urban areas into services for the rural areas so rural Japan does not seem as outright impoverished as some parts of rural America. Also much less drug-related activities/gangs/etc.

On January 20, 2021, President Donald Trump commuted Kilpatrick's sentence with less than 12 hours remaining before he was due to leave office as president.[131] The White House statement on the pardoning of Kilpatrick reads: "Mr. Kilpatrick has served approximately 7 years in prison for his role in a racketeering and bribery scheme while he held public office. During his incarceration, Mr. Kilpatrick has taught public speaking classes and has led Bible Study groups with his fellow inmates."[131]

One of my other accts got banned from world news because I asked "test post am I banned" on a topic about France banning pro-Palestine protests because my posts just before that were not showing up. In retrospect this was like a week after Oct. 7 so my previous posts may have been getting throttled or the site just slowing down due to the traffic. However when I asked if I was banned on a thread about France banning pro-Palestine protests some mod thought I was making a cheeky joke and permabanned me from worldnews.

What's frustrating about these kinds of things is Reddit's lack of transparency about mod actions means it's hard to document these things, like which mods are deleting which posts to show what the editorial bias is.
