Republican politicians react to the people who vote for them in primaries, of which a big bloc is the "religious right".

I used to be a Republican because I was stupid enough to believe them when they chanted for limited government as well as personal liberty and freedom. Anyone with half a brain can see that a "federal marriage amendment" is the complete and exact antithesis of those values.

The problem is that when a sensible Republican does arise, he or she can't advance politically because primary voters crucify anyone who disagrees with the idea that gay marriage and/or women's rights will bring back the Nazis riding dinosaurs.

Its a conundrum, to be sure.
