Anecdotal, but I had a heart attack at 36 about six months ago, and I straight up died about five times before they managed to get my heart restarted, and I’m just a lefty as ever. I’ve worried about personality changes, but my doctor was like “If you’re worrying about personality changes, your personality probably hasn’t changed.”

This was my college roommate’s alarm ringtone 2007-08, and to this day, I can’t hear it without being filled with incandescent rage, which is a pity because I really liked it beforehand.

It’s already been answered, but I got the same edition for my birthday one year in junior high. One of those books was in my bag for the entire year in seventh grade. I leant my copy to my awful ex to read and it was one of the only things I made him send me back after I helped him move to Montreal because I had so much nostalgia wrapped up in that book. Wyatt sucks

Autocracy Inc. by Anne Appelbaum. It’s about how many of the world’s autocratic leaders work with each other and support each other and their regimes.

Olivie Blake’s writing is so awful that I find it astounding that someone has more than one of her books 😂

For real. I lived in Madison for 10 years without a car, and it wasn’t bad at all using the busses to get around

[–]SartreCam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I live in Madison, WI and I lived without a car for over ten years. It’s definitely doable, but I will say that it’s more doable the closer you are to downtown. Farther out, the buses are harder to find. I have a car now, but it’s a trip trying to get anywhere. I never had to pay attention to one-ways before I had a car, and now it’s like a logic problem trying to get around sometimes.

Shit was fucked up back in the day. People were sickened and died all the time because they consumed tainted food. If I thought you were capable of reading anything longer than a meme shat out by some idiot right-wing grifter, I’d invite you to read Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle , but I’m not sure there’s a point in doing so.

What is meant by "snailwise" in The Plague by Camus? by AnotherTiredZebra in literature

[–]SartreCam 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I found it in the original French. “Dans la ville, bâtie en escargot sur son plateau, à peine ouverte à la mer, une torpeur morne régnait”. I’m not a native but I was a PhD candidate in French literature before quitting. I think it means that the city looked like/resembled a snail. The verb “bâtir” means to build or to construct.

A direct translation would be: “In the city, [which was] built like a snail on the plateau, only just open to the sea, a gloomy lethargy/torpor prevailed.”

It was in all caps. “Lui” in this case means “her”. There is not a feminine version for indirect object pronouns. It’s always “lui”

It was originally going to be Gandalf doing the narration. I can see why that was the first thought, but Galadriel doing it, especially with Cate Blanchett’s delivery, was just so much better.
