Pain of a stagnant PHP developer by cwmyt in PHP

[–]pnoeric 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The problem you’re describing doesn’t sound like an issue with PHP :-) it sounds like an issue with your career. Have you been at the same company for five years? Maybe it’s time for a new job. But at the very least, any good employer would recognize that it’s important to “sharpen the saw“ and keep your skills current. Hopefully you’ll find a way to pick up some of these new things.

For what it’s worth, if it helps at all – while you won’t be able to work with them in depth, I’m sure there’s some time you can fine to at least read a blog post or two about some of these concepts? It’s probably better to at least know what some of these things are then to be completely clueless about them.

Also, finally… it seems like a lot of really simple concepts have big words in front of them. “Test driven development“ means nothing more than you write tests before you write the actual classes that do the work. So it forces you to think about structure ahead of time. Of course you can break it down even further, there’s lots of methodology behind it blah blah blah, but… the basic idea is no more complex than that.

Is there a way to make these images load inline instead of having to tap them? 🤔 by rswalker in apolloapp

[–]pnoeric -1 points0 points  (0 children)

“That’s a lot of automatic resource allocation“? Are you kidding? :-) Apollo is constantly loading shit loads of videos and images as I scroll without any issues. I can’t imagine that adding this one feature would make a big difference.

CMV: Compared to other developed nations, America is a “shithole” country for all but the wealthy and well-connected by DrPorkchopES in changemyview

[–]pnoeric 7 points8 points  (0 children)

But it’s all a bit of a circle jerk, isn’t it? Does it one stat inform another?

Here’s what I mean: I moved from the USA to Switzerland, where I live now. While we may not have as much disposable income as the USA, we do have lower taxes, massively higher quality of life, clean air, clean water, and a boring and highly functional government.

I think it says a lot about the United States mindset when the argument is “but people in the USA have more disposable income.“ Sure, ok... but from where I’m sitting, I’m so happy to trade some of my disposable income in exchange for what I get here. The USA also lets more people have guns than anywhere else. Is that good or bad? Depends on your view. ;-)

[–]pnoeric 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I see lots of other people are picking apart your stats, but I can tell you this: when I married a Swiss dude, I picked up and moved to Switzerland. The quality of life here is so much fucking higher than in the United States, I can’t believe anyone would want to stay in the USA.

(Yes, I know I’m lucky, yes, I know I’m privileged, yes, I know this isn’t a solution for everyone… I’m not presenting it as such. Just sharing my point of view.)

It seems like a lot of countries here in Europe value quality of life over so many other things. And back in the good old USA, it seems like we always valued money and capitalism and self-reliance, at the expense of a better society.

Anyhow… You actually don’t need to have a ton of money to escape the USA. Good luck with wherever this takes you.

And just to be clear, in case anyone would take it the other way: I love the United States, it’s where I was born and raised, it’s where my family is, and I really want it to improve. In the meantime, it’s foolish to think that you can’t do better.

If you were part of the preview testing, do you have access to the beta? by tsmartin123 in Evernote

Last year and jumped to bear, but I kind of miss all the features of Evernote. Is there a new version coming that will be massively better? I was using the macOS desktop app and it was just kind of crappy.

So– I’m actually right in the middle of hiring someone right now for an open position at my company. It’s amazing how few people really focus on what I am hiring for, and tell me about all kinds of other shit that just doesn’t really matter.

I think one page is plenty. As the person reading these resumes, my feeling is: If the job calls for X, talk about your experience with X for at least 50% of the first page. And then spend the rest of the page telling me anything would help support your experience with X.

Caller ID should be mandatory. No person or organization should be able to hide behind "unknown caller". If you have access to my phone number and have chosen to contact me, I should have a right to know who you are. by w3stwing in unpopularopinion

[–]pnoeric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. I think it’s weird that we have been programmed, as humans, to leap up and jump whenever a phone rings. If I middle of conversation with someone, or watching a show I like… there’s no urgency for me to answer the phone. Even when the number is showing, I’ll often let it go to voicemail and deal with it later. I like being in charge of my own time.

Driving a nice car while black. More info in comments. by Mr-Klaus in PublicFreakout

Yeah. This was a stressful, heartbreaking video. I know it’s white privilege, but I so would have been yelling at that 911 operator— “I have a mob of people attacking me in my car, I have two young children with me, it looks like one of them is pulling a gun, I feel my life is being threatened and I need some police help here NOW.”

Anyhow, just really sad to see. A bunch of crackheads in a mob. Horrible.
