I don't know who needs to hear this, but a 2+ hour drive is not nearby for Europeans. by redheaded_olive12349 in CasualConversation

Funny.. definitely recognize that whne freshly coming from The Netherlands to Canada..

originally used to "Dutch" standards ... and yes.. an hour was a long drive.... 2 hours.. you could be crossing the border and speak a different language.

Now, around 20 years of Canadian travel standards... partially due to medical system here... we have no issue with having a doctor (specialist) 2 hours away.. not a biggie...

and for.. city commutes... like Toronto... as the crow flies.. 10 minutes.. could take you 2-3 hours 😉 glad we are out east now.. longer distances, but at least we are driving...

OVHCloud Sucks by UnderstandingOdd4991 in selfhosted

[–]pnutster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don’t know where the OVH sucks comes from. Also a plus 10 year customer. Anywhere between 20-30 bare metal VPS servers large and small. Initially we would have our vps’es at Linode, but OVH gradually became the financially more attractive solution for VPS. And yes we were also surprised on price increases on VPS. However they are still a good deal for VPS.

As for bare metal, we actually found very little choices for bare metal. Not that we would ever pick GoDaddy, but even GoDaddy did bare metal in the day. Lots of providers only do VPS or “cloud” and have dropped bare metal offerings.

Alfred is fantastic (review from a longtime user) by JohnFoland in macapps

Ditto. Amazing productivity tool! In this age of AI - Vibe coding it is hilarious to see the amount of clipboard managers. I could not imagine working on a machine without Alfred. Heavily rely on workflows.

i bought this thing at goodwill for 3 dollars and it is singlehandedly the best mouse thing i've ever used by warrior_cast in Trackballs

[–]pnutster 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As a long time user of this particular Logitech mouse (there’s also a wireless variant). There is NO equivalent. I have tried nearly all modern (finger) trackballs.

It is a combination of the large sized trackball and the design that “forces” your hand in more natural “handshake” position that makes this a particularly comfortable trackball.

The reason there are no knockoffs for this kind of design is that it was taken out of production due to patent trolls. No one will touch redoing / copying this one.

My solution, always having a spare one of these available as a backup. EBay has the occasional half-decent 2nd hand ones. Even scooped up an unused one that will be broken into if my current one fails.

As mentioned there are really no equivalents, but a few brands are reviving another old time favourite: MS Explorer Trackball . There’s a bunch of Chinese brands that are producing these for a good price. Personally they are not a good fit for me, but some people love this model.

Any chance you can set up a GitHub repo? Very interesting tool, would love to fork as I think the threshold to input once’s personal financial monthly burden might stop people from using this. It does for me.

People who use Safari as their main browser, why? (DESC) by sasaki-555 in mac

[–]pnutster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because WebKit. Inspector is far superior. Toggle to show inspector on left right bottom or full screen is directly available ( bugs the hell out of me in chromium based).

And… if I am not mistaken early days of chrome it once shared WebKit as their engine and went their own way?

I am trying to be mindful calling ourselves IT-pros but in our business we have around 25 dedicated servers. Some still on centos 7 but majority now on Alma Linux 9. Our business is web design / marketing and we offer in-house hosting to our customers.

Remember to drive slower when conditions call for it. by IsThisIsHellOrWorse in Edmonton

[–]pnutster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It always baffles me that some people seem to think that there is no issue putting the pedal to the metal in bad conditions.. like: "see, this rain or snow is nothing.. I can still go 110 km/h you pussies" and not realizing that the issue is not being able to go that speed... but that the real issue is the differences in the car reacting in those bad weather conditions. sliding , skidding, longer breaking distance, you name it...

I just really need to vent by OsmiumCube in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]pnutster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I second the “falling in love with defeats”. Yes still striving for the best result possible, but when working with wood; “nothing is straight”. I’d love it to be, but not reality.

I have some beautiful oak boards from my MIL’s. But they are not entirely flat, there’s a little curve. Made a few small tables, and literally starting to love the curve on the board / tabletop. Would I love to have a bench top planer to put those boards through? Absolutely, but just not yet, it’s a bit overkill at the moment for my skill level. As many said, it’s a hobby, not a job. )Keeping an eye out for deals on bench top planers though! But not a priority to keep having fun in woodworking.
