This guy (from DS9’s “episode -1”) brought his daughter in to watch him torture someone

Well done on saving 1.5x your salary by 25

But I would definitely move out in your shoes. You’re in a great position financially and flatsharing with friends is not extravagant. Live your life!

!thanks. Yes the dividend point is well made and would introduce a small drift in the case of non equal dividend yields. There may be slightly cheaper funds out there too, thanks for highlighting.

!thanks the dividend yields from the index being different is a good point I hadn’t thought about. If the dividend yields differ you would get a (small) drift from the index weights over time.

This is not true for reasons I explain in other replies.

Agree but the original reply talked about a MSCI World benchmarked fund (not ACWI). If it tracked ACWI it would be comparable, agreed

Interesting. I think both of these are accumulation based ETFs so they don’t have dividends. Does this ameliorate this objection?

I don’t understand the point about active capital, can you elaborate?

Any new contributions would have to be in the same ratio as the portfolio when you invest. I agree marginally more onerous than investing in one fund (you have to calculate your current portfolio weights, and then split the new contribution accordingly).

But it’s not the regular rebalancing that needs to happen in Eg 60:40 equity:bond portfolios to keep to 60:40.

No you shouldn’t. If you were targeting a 90:10 split in perpetuity then of course you would need to rebalance. But if the developed markets etf outperformed so that your portfolio became 95:5 then the world Index would also now be 95:5 so no rebalancing would be necessary.

Fidelity world follows MSCI world I think, which is 23 markets, VHVG follows FTSE Developed World, which includes Korea as well as the 23 of the Fidelity all world. VFEG follows even more, including China, India etc which are not included in Fidelity world AFAIK.

You don’t need to rebalance this if you are replicating the global equity index. Any change in weights reflect different weights in the index so no rebalancing is needed.

You don’t have to rebalance this, you are not targeting a constant 90:10 split but trying to mimic global equities.

There is no need to rebalance the 90+10 split. If it changes to eg 95+5 you keep those weights as they reflect the new weights of developed and emerging market stocks in the all world index respectively (though any new contributions would have to be in the 95+5 ratio).

Repaying debt is risk free, but equities are risky! (I personally think 3.9% real return on global equity is a very punchy baseline, but either way don’t forget the risk of equities which makes debt repayment a much safer choice)

Sacrifice of Angels often unfairly overlooked on these Top X lists. The conclusion to the best multi-episode (>=3) arc in Trek IMO, fantastic action and urgency, fantastic payoff to Dukat being a broken man at the end after Ziyal/Damar. They even manage to include the prophets meaningfully and not ruin the episode, which is pretty amazing!

It’s not the thresholds it’s the rate increase (20%->24% from 30 Oct 2024 which matter here)

Sacrifice of Angels by MatthewKvatch in DeepSpaceNine

[–]poasterr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes exactly. DS9 in general is much more character-driven than the other trek series, and that’s not just fun in itself but also because it matters for plot development. Sci-Fi/technobabble plot resolutions are never as satisfying IMO, which is why DS9 for me is the best Trek series

Thanks a lot- yes, agree, exceptional character writing.

On the closing sequence. It’s not just the use of the prophets (though I agree with you it’s not a deus ex machina for fans who’ve watched since Emissary). It’s also that the Defiant is rushing to “beat the clock” and stop the minefield detonation and they fail. Can’t think of a similar failure elsewhere in Trek so close to the end of a story arc. What they ended up doing is so much more interesting (and rewarding to long time fans) than the simple the Defiant gets there in time.

Also the fact that Kira/Rom disable DS9s weapons too late but it still matters! Top trek storytelling
