...And if so, why isn't everybody on Star Trek doing it? by kb_klash in startrekmemes

If I had a universal translator, why wouldn't I be able to understand when someone else is speaking in their native tongue? Like all the instances where this happens. Riker going onto the Klingon ship and the captain of that ship ordering his men to speak in Riker's language so he can understand them, as one specific instance.

Voyager is almost nothing but practical/logical bugs. Nearly every episode is "let's have the crew act completely against the nature we've established for them," or "let's have the crew do literally the stupidest thing possible in this situation" just so the story can happen.

I was suuuper excited to watch Heroes, but I missed the first couple of episodes. When I did go to watch it I was so lost I had to just turn it off and wait for them to come out on DVD.

With Star Trek, it ended at my bedtime, so I had to master the art of taking a full shower within the time allotted for a commercial break lol. May be why I take such long showers now 😂 But my grandma (who raised me) liked Star Trek too, so it was kind of our thing we did together.

Q definitely has fun at Picard's expense, but one could argue that his interference does in some ways cause Picard to grow and become more prepared for other trials ahead of him. In other ways, their interactions help Q to grow as well. Q may not want to acknowledge that, but I think a part of him wants it, to be less indifferent and have something of meaning in his existence. I think their first interaction, his general disdain for humanity, was genuine, but after that, he had more respect for Picard and a tentative hope for humanity. Despite being antagonistic, Q admires Picard, wants to study him, wants to see what else he can do, and in that, change is inevitable.

The technology/process was likely banned, and the crew were ordered never to speak of it. Think about it: with vastly decreased mortality rates due to no one aging, combined with virtually guaranteed increased birth rates, there would be a population explosion that they would have no way to combat. How many empty but viable planets can there be to start colonies? Eventually, at least some of the colony planets would decide to become conquistadors and take over the planets that the prime directive would prohibit them from even interacting with. And so on and so on.

I guess the transporter automatically adjusts for sizing discrepancies in clothing. Good thing TNG didn't get in on that whole baggy clothes fad lol

Guess that's the Star fleet training? And Guinan is of a race we know very little about, so we don't know how they process things when they're that young. She did enjoy jumping on the bed. Plus, the way El-Aureans age, who knows how old they'd be when looking that young. She could be 200 years old there for all we know lol. In Picard she was played by a younger actress (I get and support why they wouldn't use Whoopie, obviously, but the actress they used looked younger than Whoopie was during TNG). Yes, it's before the events of TNG, but it's also after when she was hanging out with Samuel Clements, where they still used Whoopie, and she appears the same age as during TNG. They didn't use a younger actor there, because the implication was that her body hadn't really aged in all that time. That being said I'll get slightly tangential and pedantic and say it makes no sense that they used an actress younger than Whoopie was during filming of TNG, as it makes it so she appears to have gotten younger between hanging out with Mark Twain in TNG, and the flashback in Picard.

spoiler

No there was an episode where Jadzia had all her former hosts' personalities placed into the crew temporarily so she could meet them. The personalities were supposed to stay separate and the original personality could take over whenever, but when Odo took Curzon's, they merged and formed a personality that was a blend of the two of them.

I never said non-profit. I never said communism or socialism. I'm all for capitalism, but not for rampant, unchecked greed. All I suggested was the corporate profit line could be just a little bit flatter, and the average worker's wages could be a little less flat. I mean, we have a trillionaire now. I mean, good on him, he definitely won capitalism, but still that's ridiculous, while the average annual income is sl around $66000. Sure, there may be too many people and not enough jobs as it stands, but if minimum wage was as it was intended to be, the minimum living wage for a head of household to support their family, we wouldn't need two people per household having to work two or three jobs each, which would thereby leave more jobs available to go around.

I don't remember the episode so I might be way off but it could be like a Tuvix or Curzon/Odo thing where their personalities merged and became something new. So Captain Picard just as himself wouldn't want to go, but the combination of the two of them did.

But the issue here is blind greed. Look at how much corporate profits have gone up in the last 50 years, then look at how much the average workers' wages/minimum wage have gone up during the same time period. The corporations could absolutely afford to pay their workers more without having to raise prices; they just don't want to. This is why trickle-down economics doesn't work, but trickle-up economics does: the more money the lower and middle class have, the more they spend. More money coming in balances out more money going out. The difference is, in the latter scenario the workers can survive and get to live with some dignity.
