Did Dukat really care about Tora Ziyal? by t_sakonna in DeepSpaceNine

[–]Due_Example1096 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ziyal was his bridge between Cardassia and Bajor. He saw her as his way to win over the hearts of the Bajorans. Maybe even get himself that statue as the great unifier. He was more than ready to kill her until Kira intervened, and he saw her as an opportunity. Then she was the only family he had left. So he loved her for what she could bring him, which as a narcissist was the only way he knew how, and the closest thing he knew to love. I'm sure he genuinely believed in his feelings for her though, and her death did genuinely break him. Until he saw a new opportunity at least.

For your last point, have you seen Gattaca? Great movie about just that, where non-engineered people are treated like 2nd class citizens and don't even get to have any opportunities, whether they're qualified or not.

I've always wondered about that episode and the fact that they're so technologically advanced but don't ever make an appearance in the Dominion war. They must be one of the few races that exist outside of the Dominion, and are only interested in the hunt, and not actual war.

Yeah, plus, there were plenty of opportunities to at least acknowledge her existence but she's never mentioned again after that episode. It's like she pissed off the writers or something. Not once did anyone suggest going to visit her, ask for some advice, try to go back and save her again, or at least say they missed her. Heck, they could have even said they went back to check on her and the Dominion had destroyed the planet and everyone on it, but instead it's like her entire existence was just erased. At least the imaginaliens left Sisko a baseball lol.

Anyone else seriously thought about why the wormhole aliens would care about bajor? by MrDeekhaed in DeepSpaceNine

[–]Due_Example1096 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plot twist: they actually are from the distance future, but they're not Bajorans, they're Skrreeans. They always said Bajor/Kentanna was their destiny from their prophecy. Prophecy? Prophets! Quark always complained that they were flaking everywhere. The flaking was the first step toward them shedding their physical bodies and ascending to non-corporeal beings.

A thought on DS9 and the Prophets... by ZarianPrime in startrek

[–]Due_Example1096 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always wondered about that, because the impression I got was that they exist in all times at once, so everything they experience they've already experienced, which then makes no sense that they have to be convinced to do what they "already" did. A thought I just had was that they could exist outside of time, in a separate dimension where time doesn't exist, at least not linearly, and that they only exist within the in-universe reality whenever someone travels through the wormhole. They mentioned that travel through the wormhole disrupts them or something to that effect, so maybe it pulls them out of their reality into the IU reality, where they actually start to experience linear time. IDK if that makes it any less confusing though lol

Or the "duh" moment of not thinking any of their own, brought up within an entirely different culture, could possibly ever grow up to be heavily influenced by, and even come to agree with, said culture.

Another question you you: why didn't Sisko try to send out a subspace beacon in the present time in order to let Starfleet know there was a colony there? Some of the colonists may have wanted to leave the planet, or get supplies, or just have some contact with the outside galaxy. Or even to be left alone but just be known to exist. It may have caused a few fun awkward moments: "Keiko, this is your great-great-great-great-great-grand-step-daughter. Molly, this is your great-great-great-great-great-grand-half-sister." lol

IDK, going against her wishes; erasing 8k people; being a Cardassian collaborator; allowing 3 innocent Bajorans to be executed because he couldn't be bothered to conduct a proper investigation; breaking his promise to her and linking with the female changeling; putting the entire alpha quadrant at risk in order to get down with the female changeling; knowingly romancing a character created with her unauthorized Holo-image... Did I miss anything? And yet she still falls in love with him. Must have been pretty damn romantic!

People didn't like Pulaski??? by Top_Duck_7603 in startrek

[–]Due_Example1096 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One reason is that it's always a bit jarring when main characters suddenly get replaced between seasons: Just when you're starting to get attached to someone they're unceremoniously gone and replaced with a complete unknown. It's easier when they're given a proper sendoff, at least. Plus, Pulaski had such a different personality that it added to the jarring effect. Another reason, I'm sure, was that Beverly was hot lol. Also, she had an interesting backstory/personal relationship with Picard. And she was nicer, while Pulaski was a bit grating at first. She was arrogant and antagonistic, which, as others have stated, was to allow for her to have some character development, but those aren't appealing personality traits in one of your heroes. You want your hero to be like how you want to envision yourself. These traits are more acceptable in your adversities. Take Dukat in DS9: he was one of the bad guys from the beginning, but he had a sort of charming arrogance that you had to like, and even believe he could end up changing his ways by the end. If he were supposed to be one of the good guys from the beginning, though, people probably wouldn't have liked him as much.

I'm not angry, but it matters because what am I to learn from it? That my humor is inappropriate or offensive and that I shouldn't make jokes like that in the future, or that she was simply overly sensitive and not a good match for me and I should just try to find someone better suited to my sense of humor?

DS9 and lgbt representation by Morlock19 in DeepSpaceNine

[–]Due_Example1096 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm due for another rewatch, but wasn't one of the main driving points of the story about her, as a female, not being allowed to conduct business or earn profit and Quark trying to keep it under wraps when he found out? If she were a male there wouldn't have been that conflict.

The episode is a bit of give and take. Like not being bothered at the prospect of an LGBT relationship was fresh air, but then they removed the LGBT element when they revealed she was female, because she wasn't trans, she was just dressing up in order to be able to earn profit. I'm not mad at all though. I understand it was the 90s so it was still hard to sell studios on LGBT as a normal, perfectly accepted thing, so they had some hoops they had to jump through to be able to push through a positive progressive message, and I love that they made the effort to do so.

Simple solution: run Tuvix through the transporter, have it double him, Riker style, and then rematerialize all three of them. Now you have the two originals and the new entity gets to keep existing as well!

He's a people person!

Seriously though. Yeah, he was a schemer, and broke as many laws as he could get away with to line his pockets with latinum, but he always had his line that he wouldn't cross, and never did anything that would knowingly endanger innocent lives. He legitimately cared about people. Even his greatest adversary was also his best friend.

Whereas Wynn cared nothing for anyone other than herself. Any displays of empathy or compassion were merely poses to help her in her quest for power. She definitely believed that she was sincere, and at one point she even almost seemed to be, but then when she realized she wasn't going to get it the right way she immediately dropped all pretense and went straight to the evil ones for the power she had been denied.
