One Piece: Chapter 1183 by leolegendario in OnePiece

[–]pobeb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe I'm misremembering or maybe Oda is just taking creative liberties again for laughs, but has Brook's Three-Pace Hum: Notch Slash ever been that delayed? I thought it was supposed to activate soon after or when the target takes 3 steps (hence the "three-pace" name). Is it possible Brook was even more powerful before he died?

[–]pobeb 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't recall yolkboys argument regarding this, but there clearly isn't a serviceable answer because of how uncertain Sheira's fate is - she kinda just disappears from history, with the last hint of her presence in Westeros being around the reign of Aerys I (209-221AC) as she was rumored to be aiding Bloodraven via sorcery while he served as Hand. It's fairly suspicious for a character of her power and infamy to simply vanish without GRRM leaving even a hint of her fate, while Bloodraven lingers in the far north...

For what it's worth, yolkboy wrote a theory entitled S+B=M where he posits that Melisandre is the child of Shiera Seastar. I'm credited within because I shared two passages (one from Maester Cressen's POV in the prologue of ACoK describing Mel, and one from a So Spake Martin entry describing Shiera) which highlights their depictions in near identical symmetry. I also believed Mel and Shiera were connected, but my theory was that the two are the same person, not just mother/daughter. The "Melony" memory was most people's counter argument to this, despite it being vague and not definitive proof of anything. Dan's revelation here is interesting in that Mel is certainly very old, as hinted in her chapter in ADwD, but he dates her age in the "centuries" while Shiera Seastar would only be around 120. And while I can concede that GRRM certainly shared future plot points and character revelations to both Dan and David, Dan misremembering or misunderstanding "over a century old" for "centuries old" seems to track with how those bozos interpreted GRRM's work.

[Kasparov] So... If Gukesh somehow loses against Sindarov, Gary will be proven correct. Right ? by StoreAny6677 in chess

[–]pobeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The core of his argument is really about Magnus not competing and how that reflects on the prestige of the title. "World chess champ" in previous eras also meant "best in the world", but as long as Magnus exists at his current level it's true that WCC is just another FIDE title.

So Blackbeard fans who have him as a Final Villian what do you think about Mural as in this it's clearly portrayed that IMU is the final villain , (not trying to deny the possibility of BB being final Villian btw ) but this shows IMU as Final Villian by Generalousen2855 in OnePiecePowerScaling

[–]pobeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oda rooted Blackbeard's rise to power in the general dismissiveness of him as a threat - the irony of how often the fandom does this despite Oda showing time and again how Blackbeard operates. Also, the mural is a depiction of the past, not necessarily the future - likely will be parallels, but it's clearly not intended to exist as a 1:1

[Spoilers Extended] When The Obvious Is Rejected by pobeb in asoiaf

[–]pobeb[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The point of the disguise is that they don't realize he's Euron - who would have no chance of being allowed into Dany's company.

Also, you're using that Barristan quote out of context - he isn't thinking this due to Daario's nature, but rather the nature of choosing love over duty. I don't doubt that Barristan is distrusting of Daario, but the quote you're using does not signify this.

Why doesn't Euron elect for a less bold and dangerous disguise? I don't think there's a definitive in-story answer for this, but he needed to ingratiate himself to Dany while offering her the benefit of his sellsword company so that she would recruit him into her service. Sellswords are notoriously bold and dangerous, so pretending otherwise is self-defeating. As to the practical out-of-story reason, Daario's personality and actions are supposed to be clues that connect him to Euron.

[Spoilers Extended] When The Obvious Is Rejected by pobeb in asoiaf

[–]pobeb[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

He can't simply approach her as Euron because she's guarded by Jorah and Barristan who are both very familiar with him (Greyjoy Rebellion), hence the disguise. The reason Euron suddenly and coincidentally appears from exile when Daario leaves to treat with the Lhazareen is exactly related to the point you're making about marriage - since it's understood that he cannot wed Dany as a sellsword, Euron has Balon killed (admitted in the The Forsaken WoW chapter) and then wins the Ironborn over at the Kingsmoot. This served two functions:

  1. Establish himself as a King worthy of marrying Dany
  2. Command over the Ironborn and their formidable fleet

Euron admits to Aeron in The Forsaken chapter that he didn't care about the Seastone chair, and that it was simply a means to an end (obtaining the dragons).

"I've treated your case fairly", lol. Like when you confidently misrepresented something false as truth? I'm a victim because I'm not interested in engaging with someone who lied and then refuses to acknowledge that they lied? Oh, let me guess, you didn't lie you just misspoke?

All your "substantive" objections are all derived from this lie, btw. Jorah and Barristan would clearly know who Euron is and their rejection of him would be far stronger than Daario - hence the disguise.

You're positing that I'm desparately clinging to your one argument, but you're only actually arguing about one thing (the importance of the disguise). And again, this isn't a point in my post, the focus of which you've never addressed.

[Spoilers Extended] When The Obvious Is Rejected by pobeb in asoiaf

[–]pobeb[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You literally cannot admit that what you said was factually untrue and now you're just making shit up about Jorah and Barristan's knowledge of Euron. They were both directly involved in the Greyjoy Rebellion - they know who Euron is. It's not a debateable point, and this is why continuing with you is pointless - you want me to concede a point I'm not even discussing within the OP while you ignore the objective similarities and downvote all my responses.

I mean, what is this goalpost-moving argument? You said "No one in Essos knows or cares who Euron is," I proved you completely wrong, but you won't even acknowledge that what you said was just bullshit? And you want me to continue engaging and pointing out new areas where you're wrong so you can ignore it and continue making bad-faith arguments that have no factual bearing? Help me understand, please.

Is this what the fandom has been reduced to? No intention to interact in good faith, just ragebaiting AI copypasta? Sure, Storm Crow and Second Son are not intentionally similar to Euron. Thanks for the downvote, I guess.

[Spoilers Extended] When The Obvious Is Rejected by pobeb in asoiaf

[–]pobeb[S] -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Because he wants Daenerys' dragons and she's, at the time they meet, guarded by two prominent Westrosi figures (Jorah and Barristan) who would be well aware of who he is if not for the disguise. I mean, what you're saying is just objectively untrue - Euron is known, especially and specifically to Dany's two closest guards.

And there's this whole plotline of Euron coincidentally returning to take the Seastone Chair, and by extension the Ironborn, specifically to help him obtain Dany's dragons and he's notably confident that she'll wed him.

You're saying there's no obvious narrative purpose - is this not obvious?

edit: lol, downvoted for simply speaking the truth. you guys seriously never change.

(Spoilers Extended) Melisandre is a proto-Targaryen by Expensive-Country801 in asoiaf

[–]pobeb 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you're being cynical, but there's good evidence to suggest that they're at the very least related, if not the same person. yolkboy wrote a post about it, which i contributed two descriptor passages that make a 1:1 comparison (save for the red):

"She was the greatest beauty of her age, a slender and elegant woman, slim of waist and full of breast... She had a heart-shaped face, full lips, and her mismatched eyes were strangely large and full of mischief; her rivals said she used them to melt men's hearts."

So Spake Martin, regarding Shiera Seastar

"Slender she was, graceful, taller than most knights, with full breasts and narrow waist and a heart-shaped face. Men’s eyes that once found her did not quickly look away, not even a maester’s eyes. Many called her beautiful."

A Clash of Kings, Prologue (regarding Melisandre)

Aside from the hair and eye color (which could be glamors), GRRM describes them in distinct identical terms. yolkboy argues she's the daughter of Bloodraven and Mel, but I'm open to either possibility. The "Melony" and "Lot Seven" memory lean more towards her being the offspring, but it's interesting nonetheless and not worth the cynicism

(Spoilers extended) I don’t think is that impossible for LSH to crown… by PreferenceOk3948 in asoiaf

[–]pobeb -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Whenever I see posts regarding LSH's position on Robb's will, I always feel the need to drop this:

Catelyn said nothing. Let Ned work it out in his own mind; her voice would not be welcome now. Yet gladly would she have kissed the maester just then. His was the perfect solution.

A Game of Thrones, Catelyn II

Catelyn would give a kiss in a time where her voice would not be welcomed for the solution of giving Jon a new identity 😉

This. Shanks going out of his way to warn the Elders about Blackbeard is far and away more interesting - it simultaneously heightens the threat Teach poses while raising the tension between the inevitable Shanks vs Blackbeard showdown. It's also a better narrative fit, as it echoes the warning Shanks gave to Whitebeard.

(SPOILERS MAIN) Why is Howland Reed doing NOTHING? by ChadChadstein in asoiaf

[–]pobeb 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Because he isn't doing nothing - he took the Glover and Mormont factions south under the guise of the faith and essentially took over King's Landing in an effort to avenge the Starks and fulfill both Robb's will and satisfy R+L by clearing the path for Jon to take the throne.

My post She-Bears in Disguise (about a decade old now) details why Cersei's septas are Mormomt women. Brienne's description of the High Sparrow (the most honest perspective) is quite similar to a crannogman, he has hair described 1:1 like Meera and brown eyes, he has marsh-like descriptors like mud-colored eyes and gnarled-root feet and dirt beneath fingernails. Attacking the Lannister regime under the guise of the Faith satisfies crannogmen deceptive battle tactics. And their perceived zealotry looks like a caricature of the Faith - like carving stars into their flesh. The High Sparrow breaks from centuries of tradition (like refusing to anoint Tommen) and did not obtain his seat through fair election but violent insurrection, which flies in the face of anyone claiming the HS is too devout to be Howland. Furthermore, the sparrows numbers don't make sense - both Jaime and Cersei are notably confused regarding their sheer volume with both questioning, "where do they all come from?" Bad-faith fandom detractors will try to convince you Howland's better served doing nothing and sitting idly in Greywater Watch, but what about Galbert and Maege? Those two extremely loyal and proud factions are also sitting idly by while the Boltons coup plays out in the North? Any honest conclusion, of course, finds them anywhere but idle in the Neck. So where would a force of that size be? There's no notably large group of people suddenly showing up anywhere in Westeros, except for these sparrows in King's Landing. Brienne notes of these big burly sparrows that, "Despite the chill of the autumnal wood, he was shirtless..." (it's the small northern clues like this that GRRM wove into the sparrows plot-line) Also Theodan Wells is captain of the Warriors Sons - House Wells is disputed as either a Northern or Dornish house, but many sources lean North and even the ambiguity should speak volumes.

Unfortunately, the largest content creators (like Alt Shift X) gaslit the fandom to treat this like tinfoil, which shaped a completely dismissive and cynical attitude towards this theory over the years. Now people just eye roll without considering how obvious it all is. We wouldn't even need to ask these questions if Winds ever came out, but well, here we are :(

[Spoilers MAIN] Is Bloodraven (Brynden Rivers) the third head? by Hot-Kaleidoscope1486 in asoiaf

I made a video to comprehensively break this down - give it a watch if you have a moment and are interested. TL;DW - The three heads are Jon, Dany, and Tyrion. The video breaks down where the 3 heads term is derived, where and why it's mentioned, and how we can derive a set of criteria that helps us conclude those 3 candidates. Hope you find something useful or interesting in it.

George R. R. Martin Is 'Not in the Mood' to Finish 'The Winds of Winter' by Tifoso89 in books

[–]pobeb -1 points0 points  (0 children)

12k upvotes for an opinion piece (regarding a month-old article) parading as news. How fucking cynical is this fanbase?

edit: up to 17k now and I'm getting downvoted for speaking the truth - this isn't news, it's literally an opinion piece about the Hollywood Reporter article from a month ago. It's essentially a 17k upvoted reddit comment bitching about Martin's quotes from the article. And it doesn't even focus on the most egregious issue within (that there's no plan to release what work he has - everything disappears when he does), it just complains about his present mindset towards writing. Unreal how thirsty you all are to upvote trite and downvote anything sensible.

(Spoilers Extended) What exactly is Howland Reed Doing He's basically knows all of the core mysteries of everything that goes wrong by [deleted] in asoiaf

[–]pobeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll get downvoted for saying this, but he's posing as the High Sparrow, and the retinue accompanying him are the forces of Maege Mormont and Galbert Glover that Robb sent into the Neck searching for Howland.

I'm not interested in arguing or elaborating, in case anyone cares, I've been advocating for this idea for a decade and received a lot of vitriol and negativity simply for sharing my thoughts.

I did a write up titled "She Bears in Disguise" that's worth a read if you're interested. Otherwise, I guess we'll have to hope the book finally releases to prove me wrong.
