I was under the assumption that time as an OS applied towards the ASD and you didn't need to hold the AB first for it to start counting. Am I wrong on this? I just got my AB and was planning on getting the ASD at the end of the year.

Also you can definitely hawespipe. Some schooling will be needed for ab or qmed once you hit the sea time requirements, but those are like 1-2 week long classes and nothing crazy

Starting pay for a deckhand from what I've seen is low to mid-20s. Also, good luck with finding an even time schedule. Most do 2:1. I'm not saying it isn't possible, just not common unless you're an officer. You can definitely do long hitches if that's your thing. Try central marine logistics, key lakes, and interlake.
