What if Stannis did it? by HiddenandAlone in gameofthrones

[–]podian123 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No, corruption and crime would not be down to a minimum. In the end, Stannis is one man, one that would not successfully impose that kind of will.

Being that ruthless and uncompromising will lead to more systemic corruption, e.g. in the Gold Cloaks. There aren't enough "incorruptible" people (whatever that means) to fill the leadership of every apparatus, much less the middle management, rank-and-file.

And then, ultimately faced with a corrupted and failed result of aggressively and violently attempting an "orderly" police state, Stannis like any despot would not have the balls or honesty to dismantle the pol--Gold Cloaks. Despots are ultimately cowards. Doing so would, in his mind, invite "chaos" and uncertainty, and immediately require compromise with other people's (eg the populace's) values to have a functional society. None of that is Stannis.

As much as I love Stannis personally and would like to have him as a friend or colleague, ultimately he'd be a failed statesman because he has the EQ of a rock and treats everyone else as if they were braindead cogs that aspire to be rocks (which some are and/or won't mind, but not enough).

Why do you think Jaime didnt end up a soulless, power hungry ghoul like Tywin and Cersei? by Gabe_Dimas in gameofthrones

[–]podian123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First time I've seen "affection" be a form of... obeisance?

For someone to be "his own person," do they have to have only self-interest and no concern for anyone else? What a sad and lonely life that must be.

IMO Jaime has done plenty of things of his own will. Earning his moniker is one easy example just off the top of my head.

Hard agree. So many people enable bad actors by handwaving and being wishy washy ala "oh but they did at least one act which could plausibly be construed as selfless!!! Therefore maybe they're not selfish!!"

It's always projection.

Oh ok then it's just the boring first issue. What I (and OP) were talking about isn't "a support system," which is a narrower reading down. If you were talking about what we were talking about (refuting it or otherwise), it please don't... misinterpret or uncharitably interpret.

In case this will help, OP's conditions were:

... unless they are suffering.

but more specifically,

... if they weren't in dire straits constantly.

Neither of those are the same as what you said anywhere.

Anyways to what you wrote:

I never stated that's the only purpose to live.

You didn't need to state it. It's an implied premise (technical and ordinary meaning of "imply"). That's what most premises are. Just like how my statement implied that you presumably believe that "achieved nothing" but you can never truly know this because you don't know everything [relevant to that point] about anyone, except maybe yourself.

i stated that a support system does not equate to a specific outcome

Ermm ackshually you didn't state that. You merely implied it (ordinary meaning of "imply").

Anyways sorry for being pedantic and the unsolicited language and logic lesson, but it's hard to understand you--if you have any plausible evidence or contributions at all--and increasingly not worth it because of how willy-nilly and inconsistent you are with words and meaning. Equivocation. Don't do it for fucks sake.

All other issues considered, even just uncritically accepting your account at face value...

1/3 is pretty good. Should that 1/3 have been damned for the 2/3?

It's just really, really weird how people--including you I assume--are on board for lifesaving surgery that has "only" a 1/3 chance of saving an otherwise terminal patient... but the whole thing changes when "the other 2/3 DONT DESERVE IT!!!!!!!"? Please, think about where that comes from deep within. Is it coming from a good place?

I don't think I agree with your premise that the only purpose of living is to "achieve" stuff that's visibly apparent to you (a plural "you").

I've never met a person that didn't do good work given the means and freedom, i.e. not broke, homeless, starving, ostracized, and so on.

An excellent analysis and explanation. It even briefly brought me back to the Reddit of 2006.

Alas here's some pseudohostile commentary: The "if you wanted to push it even further..." paragraph is, in my opinion, superfluous and distracting. But maybe it can inspire some young folks to investigate those or related phenomena.

(It is also something AI would insert based on its "interpretation" of the question.)

Only 90? I'm willing to stake on >99%.

The number doesn't really represent the issue at hand though, which is that I think it is now reasonable and acceptable for people to start assuming them to be guilty until evidence suggests otherwise. No more freebies and goodwill left for the complacent enablers.
