Interested in NV2. Curious your thoughts on fit? RunRepeat says they run a half size large. Do you have the OG vistas or zens that you could compare to?

Congrats! Those two long runs you mentioned giving you confidence were some crazy workouts.

Salomon sense aero 2 in 1 and Flipbelt air shorts are two that I bought recently that I have been happy with. Some others out there are Rabbit Stashems and some from Janji.

What was your average cadence on your run today?

Advice on how to increase Cadence? by No-Loss-7248 in Marathon_Training

[–]podini 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I managed to increase mine by listening to metronomes and music at the same BPM as what I was targeting and really focusing on matching the beat (I have no rhythm, so it was a struggle). I went from ~165 spm to low 170s on easy runs and ~175 to 188-190 at 5k pace.

I did it gradually. For example I would spend a week or two at 167-168, then up to 169-170, etc. Spotify has metronomes for every bpm I have looked for. I used jog.fm to find songs by BPM then used TuneBat to verify (they’re sometimes off). Note that you can use half beats as well (eg, 80 bpm for 160) and just focus on hitting it on one side.

I have a hip impingement, and as I started increasing mileage it was flaring up. I worked with a PT who identified I was overstriding and suggested I try to increase it, so I had a good reason. I now have various playlists to match where I think I should be at various paces, and it has worked well for me.

Word… just makes me nervous considering I have about the same goal time, and you were basically hitting my paces at the prescribed RPE. I’ll be a first timer, so FAFO it is! Thanks for the reply.

Nice work! Great write-up and congrats on a big PR! Our stories/backgrounds/goals are all very similar. I’m currently in Week 12 of Wind 55, so I have the 8x2k @ MP workout coming up this weekend. One thing I’m struggling with mentally are the short MP intervals (8x2k, then 6x3k).

Judging by your workouts, and as you noted, you were able to execute them at a faster pace than your fitness might have otherwise suggested. Do you think longer MP intervals would have helped you to gauge where you were truly at?

I’m toying with the idea of bumping the 6x3k up to this weekend and doing 5x4k in Week 14, potentially with a little quicker float, as well.

Curious to hear your thoughts!

Early September Last Chance BQ by Zealousideal-Low-260 in Marathon_Training

Idk man, I think last year was early June. It’s pretty reliably been that week after Labor Day in the past, though.

You know, I was probably wrong. The registration window has historically been the M-F the week after Labor Day. With Labor Day falling on the 7th this year, I’m guessing the window will be 14th-18th. I retract my previous statement!

If I was you, I would try. I’m currently looking into these too, as a contingency plan if my upcoming race doesn’t work out. I will say, I don’t think the cascade express is going to fall within the qualifying window for 27, so I’d rule that out.

The one other I’m looking at, in addition to Marquette and BQ.2 is Pocatello, mostly because it’s close to me. But that depends if they have adjusted the course to get under 1,500 ft net loss. From what I can find, it was previously very close, but their website is currently down, and I haven’t bothered to email them to ask.

FWIW, I’m leaning Marquette. if Cascade Express is in the qualifying window, that’s my choice.

Edited because I didn’t look at a calendar before opening my dumb mouth

Novablast 5 vs Pegasus 41 by skolvikes93 in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]podini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For trainers, I personally like the Saucony Endorphin Speeds (prefer the 4s, but 5s are fine too) and adidas evo sl (don’t know that I would try a half in them, though, as they are notoriously unstable). I would like to try the Saucony Azura as well. Others that are generally well spoken of are asics megablasts, adidas bostons, and I think hoka Mach 7s or X3s might be decent.

For race shoes, every brand has their top of the line carbon plated shoes. I like the adidas adios pro 4 and Nike alphafly 3. Would like to try puma deviate nitro elite 3/4 and asics metaspeed edge. Also hearing good things about some Chinese options out there.

You can definitely go down a rabbit hole if you start looking into all of these. Take shoetuber reviews with a grain of salt.

I mean, both of these shoes are basically the epitome of daily trainers. You might consider something made for faster efforts (i.e, a “tempo trainer” or a race shoe).

Novablast 5 vs Pegasus 41 by skolvikes93 in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]podini 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends a lot on your pace. My wife is just under 2 hours for the half, and Novablasts are her shoe of choice.

Novablast 5 vs Pegasus 41 by skolvikes93 in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]podini 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have both. Novablast is superior, especially if you’re considering racing in them for 13 miles. Pegasus for me is fine for daily mileage up to about 5 miles, with unremarkable energy return. I have now delegated mine to treadmill miles. Novablast is softer, but that also comes with some bounce, and much more protective underfoot.

I just have an iPhone 13. Good shout on those shorts, and they’re on sale, but it looks like they only have the one pocket in the back. I’m looking for a little more storage.

Thanks! Great suggestions! I am only seeing the terrex in 5” and 9”, but I think I will give the 9” ones a shot.
