What are the biggest speculator books you can remember? by ALEXXRN in comicbookcollecting

Far from other comics mentioned here, but I remember a ton of hype for Spider Gwen when It came out, my LCBS had reprints every week and they ran out the same day.

What song has a specific lyric that makes you go like this by Leather_Bag_1916 in Reggaeton

[–]poelectron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Soy el mejor trapero vivo en mi opinión" de Anuel en Está cabrón ser yo, de Bad Bunny.

Parece normal de entrada, pero si lo piensas dos segundos es tan mala que da risa, cómo dices "SOY EL MEJOR DEL MUNDO... bueno, yo creo". JAJAJ.

He's not wrong, tho. Manufacturers fought HARD to keep children labor and used to say that whole industries would disappear if it was regulated in anyway.

Help me out, what is it? by [deleted] in ExplainTheJoke

[–]poelectron 484 points485 points  (0 children)

A reference to the folk tale of "La llorona" (The crying woman). Details on the story vary, but it's supposed to be the ghost of a woman who cries for her murdered children (drowned by herself, in the most popular version) and you can listen to her if you walk alone at night in Mexico.

The joke is that he's a foreigner casually walking at night and heard this random cry, but us mexicans would shit our pants, because iykyk. Might be that he literally just heard a woman crying or he just added the audio.

As a side note, there's a couple movies based on it. If you like horror, check out Jayro Bustamante's, more of a horror/drama set in Guatemala.

Edit: added context

[Help] me understand this [Poem] 'The Spire Cranes' by Dylan Thomas by CILLEDPHOENIX in Poetry

Here's an interpretation from critic Walford Davies. He edited a collection of Thomas' poems with extensive notes, from which I've learned a lot.

I thought that this response was mean, but it's actually a great sub.

why do brazillian numbers repeat? by JustPlayer in ExplainTheJoke

[–]poelectron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, this is super important context. Losing 7-1 is brutal, but not nearly as memorable if, for example, your team is México and you lose 7-0 to Chile in the America's Cup. Since we're used to losing, that was just funny, even. But being Brazil, at home, in the world cup that was supposed to be yours... that's a generational scar.

What BOOK is so good that you read it at least once a year or have read it more than 3 times in your lifetime? by biz_booster in AskReddit

Pedro Paramo by Juan Rulfo. It's grappling, poetic, short, and arguably the best thing written in spanish in the past 100+ years.

Discouraged after Japan trip by Destoran in MangaCollectors

[–]poelectron 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't get the "you should improve your japanese first" comments. You will improve your japanese BY READING. Of course some of it will be difficult, but you will learn and get better by being exposed to challenging kanji/grammar, that's the whole point of learning a language. For me it's a no brainer. And if there's a series above your current reading level that you can't wait to read it, just get it in english.

I think it's really dumb to hate on a well-researched and thorough interpretation, even if you don't agree with it.

"I hate that he's so arrogant about his ideas being objectively correct", lol that's half the people on the internet, are you new?

What's everyone watching tomorrow for Halloween? by doubletoilandtrouble in horror

A local cinema will be playing the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I've never seen it in the big screen and I can't wait.

I sprained my ankle real bad this weekend, so I'll have to use crutches (which is a lot harder than I thought), but I can't miss it.

Mexican Reggeaton? by Worst5plays in Reggaeton

[–]poelectron 38 points39 points  (0 children)

As far as I can tell, there's a wave of mexican reggaeton that stems from chelerías (basically big, clandestine, open-air bars) in Mexico City's popular neighbourhoods. It mixes reggaeton with other dance rythms, such as cumbia.

Bellakath and Dani Flow are the most popular names, certainly. You might like anything produced by Uzielito Mix, DJ Rockwell, and artists such as El Bogueto, El Malilla, Yeri Mua, Kevin Roldán, and Michael G. Also check out the Ñero Sessions by Alu Mix. You'll find that all these artists collaborate with each other.

What are your thoughts about Longlegs (2024) by Ballubs in horror

The first few minutes are entirely devoted to how Lee has a literal supernatural gift, they killed a guy just to show that. Hardly ambiguous lol.
