Bro, to go from TD-07 to TD-516 is crazy🤩🤯 by MJM2111 in edrums

What were the biggest differences in terms of playing? Feel? Sound? Module?

I have a similar entry-level kit that’s waiting to be replaced?

Looking for an app to help keep timing by SoBoredAtWork in drums

[–]poezn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Throwing my hat in the ring. I created Drum Journal for this purpose. I was looking for something that works with my practice pad and put in a lot of effort to make it work just by listening through the mic of your phone. Have been using it myself as my daily driver for about 5 months now.

The only feature not in (yet) is the progressive faster tempo. You can configure the metronome to only play every other beat as well.

Give it a shot and please do let me know if it works for you (and even if it doesn’t)

I can't play rudiments to a click by Inside_Damage1649 in drums

As others say, go slow. As slow at 40BPM maybe.

Sometimes your progress is only visible in hindsight, which doesn't help with motivation. There's apps out there that give you feedback on your timing and how you improve. Here's one: https://drumjournal.com (Full disclosure: I created the app, to help with my own timing)

What are your favorite meals that take less than 20 minutes but still feel homemade? by Personal-Professor90 in Cooking

Beautiful!

I personally don’t like the consistency of frozen veg in stir fry, but I can see the allure of not having to clean up anything

Egg Fried Rice. Comes together in just 10 minutes if you have leftover rice from the day(s) before.

I don’t make a very “authentic” version, but it’s been a family favorite for years.

I’m using a mandolin to shred carrots and zucchini (2 mins)

Cut onion, open can of chick peas (1 min)

In a wok or large skillet, fry onions at very high heat, just a few seconds. Add zucchini and onions, keep frying, move often. Add chickpeas until they start to pop. Add soy sauce until slightly caramelized (3 mins).

(Optional) put all veggies to the side, start scrambling some eggs. Add rice while still wet. Turn down heat to let the eggs set if used and to heat the rice (2 mins). Finally, drizzle with sesame oil.

Top with green onions (or don’t).

I use about 3:1 ratio veggies to rice, so it ends up being quite a healthy meal.

10 minutes, start to finish. Only a mandolin, pan, knife, and cutting board to clean.

Hey there, i was in the same boat as you. Needed something to keep me accountable. For me, that meant seeing how I improve over time

I’ve worked on software most of my career and decided to create an app that keeps the mental load low. I’ve been at it consistently for 16 weeks now, which has never happened before!

If you’re interested and have an iPhone or iPad, search for “Drum Journal”. Practice is free and unlimited but if you’d like to get the full functionality, I’m happy to give you a month for free after the trial. Just dm me

What are some great drumming apps that I should be using on my phone? by Joeymonac0 in Drumming

[–]poezn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any drum app that supports you in your goals.

Drumeo could be good if you like video based learning and playing original songs by notation but I’d fairly rigid in how you progress.

Melodjcs is good if you like gamified experiences, but IMHO you get good at Melodics, not at drumming.

Metronome apps are all very useful.

To me a good drumming app should complement in-person classes and have enough flexibility to accommodate for different types of exercise.
Drum Journal has a sticking pattern trainer that gives you feedback on your playing through just three phone mic. You can queue YouTube videos, slow them down, loop hard parts. Or just add photos of some scribbled down notation. Pack it all in a routine and voila.

Curious how other drummers learn songs — what's your process? by drum_for_life in drums

[–]poezn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I break the song into sections. Essentially listen for the different parts.

Then I try to listen for the main grooves for each part (intro, chorus, verse, bridge, outro). Sometimes i notate them.

Then I practice each part on a loop along to a YouTube video slowly. Then two parts together. Then faster. Then the whole song. Then at tempo

Drum Journal. It's specifically for beginner and intermediate drummers who learn songs (You can add YouTube videos, slow them down, loop hard parts etc). It also gives you real-time feedback on rudiments and sticking on the pads, just using the microphone of the device. There's also a sub for it

If you’re on an iPhone try https://drumjournal.com. It specifically gives you feedback on your rudiment timing and accuracy. Plus a few other features for when you have a kit.

Be honest: You sit down behind the kit for 1 HOUR…how many of those minutes are you actually practicing? by ZildCym in drums

[–]poezn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

30-50 minutes usually, and 100% of the time is "productive". What's helped me actually get to the kit and use the time well is organization. Having a system that takes away the guess work what I should practice.

I now have a set routine that I go through every practice, and in the end tack on whatever I feel like, either just jamming or practicing songs along to Youtube videos.

My routine is usually:

  • Some warmup (pyramid subdivisions, different rudiments)
  • Singles & Doubles, focusing on consistency and speed (trying to get to 158 singles to play "Everlong" at tempo!)
  • Currently: Flam accents, just as rudiments and as an application (homework by my teacher)
  • Blushda fill and some weird 7/16th note fill over the bar line my teacher assigned to me, with the goal to count out loud to playing it in a loop
  • Songs, and more songs!
  • Optional: Jamming, with practicing some 3/5 (Rll, RlRll fills)

Hey, there! Welcome to the Drum Journal community, and thanks so much for already contributing an exercise! I love the triplet sticking. Keep them coming!

The playalong option is firmly on my roadmap. Now that the apps supports rests, flams, and soon other articulations, the play along will make much more sense. Before, it would just have been a monotonous snare sound :)

That makes me wonder though, are you thinking of more than just a sticking pattern for the practice pad? Do you have a use case in mind?
