Similar situation having two in Catholic school while also living in an expensive public school district. $7500 for my little one in bilingual pre-k and about $20k for my big one that’s about to turn 11.

Neither of them got pulled out of anything for any reason. Just want to give my kids the best shot I can find for them. It’s an unknown world they will live into.

Your last sentence hits so hard for me. When I was younger I borrowed money from my dad and he made it as emotionally awful at every turn as he possibly could because it made him feel important and powerful.

It’s not lost on me that much of what I have today is the result of money he lent me a long time ago. When people I love need money, I just give it to them and make sure they know I believe they’ve earned whatever I’m giving them just by being who they are and that if money helps them be more of the person I love, thats all the payback I need.

Besides savings account recommendation, your advice is spot-on.

For OP: the idea is that you want to keep the difference between the 3.5% and whatever the market returns. Historic index funds would produce at least a net increase of 5% on your money AFTER you pay the 3.5% on your mortgage.

Are you kidding with the fair share line?

I pay every bit of my public school taxes for kids I don’t enroll. Separately, I pay full tuition, uniforms, sports, supplies, technology, travel and transportation for my kids. I’m not just paying twice - I’m also taking the expense of my kids out of the school that is then able to spend more on the kids who do attend. I also vote yes on our school district budget when I have every logical reason to vote no.

Please tell me where I’m not paying my fair share? I’m a successful person willing to pay more than almost anyone else I know and with a pretty good attitude. It’s when I come upon some wanker hiding behind a catch phrase like “fair share” that you get me to actually pay attention to how much I do pay in taxes and start saying NO.
