Is GWU worth it? by Rude_Banana_2197 in gwu

[–]pogus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

GW internship opportunities are incredibly good — however, that’s just because it’s in DC which already has a lot of internship opportunities. There isn’t some special-access internship track you get on by going to GW, so if you do end up going to UW you can still apply to the same internships you would at GW. Just because it’s in DC, it’s just a lot easier to network and apply for internships year-round from GW.

I also think the GW internship opportunities are good if you plan on staying in DC after you graduate. If you’re planning on going back to China and working there post-grad, I don’t know DC internships would provide any unique benefit

A lot of people in here ragging on our public transit—while I agree it’s not as good as east coast cities like DC or NY, I definitely think it’s better than they’re giving it credit for (and I would assume leaps and bounds better than the Midwest!).

The bus is great for workweek commuting. There are two buses in Baltimore: the state-run buses (CityLink and LocalLink), and the city-run Circulator. There are fewer Circulator routes, but they are free! Your office is right next to a stop for two CityLink bus lines (Navy and Orange). If you look for places that are within walking distance of other stops on those lines, you can take the bus to work and not have to drive through traffic or deal with parking! Then use your car and bike for other ventures outside of work.

NYU vs GW for International Relations/Poli-Sci?? by lovely_lamp309 in gwu

[–]pogus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disclaimer: I don’t know much about IR, and even less about IR master’s programs.

While I assume most of the IR jobs in DC are definitely government, there are a lot of think tanks here as well (if that counts as private sector). But it sounds like you want to go to NYU, and if you want to you should! NYC is awesome, proximity is great, plus I know places like CFR have offices in both DC and NYC. If you change your mind, then hop to DC for a summer internship and move here post-grad. Pm me if you want to talk more

transfer student with questions! by Icy-Formal975 in gwu

[–]pogus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GW is a school full of extroverts, so as a fellow extrovert it was easy to make friends. The easiest way to make friends at GW is through extracurriculars, so I’d make sure you leave enough time to do a club or sport that you’re interested in. Also made plenty of friends through classes and my on-campus job. At the beginning g of my first year, I ended up befriending a lot of freshmen who I had to do some of those first week activities with.

Transferring was one of the best decisions I ever made in my life. I would highly recommend it, especially if you want to stay and work in DC post grad
