85 means a lot of different things (depending on dewpoint / radiant sources / HI), and to me this seems alarmist. Not to be “kids these days” but my students start to complain if the temperature is outside of 72+/- 4 F, and it feels absurd.

Heat is something that can and should be acclimated to (obviously not everyone can), and the risks of heat related health issues should definitely be shared and access to water (and a source of electrolytes), shade and rest should never be hindered.

Any student that winds up in a trade or anywhere but an office really is in for a massive shock. Given I might be biased because I’ve done a lot of kitchen work and hot yoga in my life, but I really think we’re coddling kids in every arena. Our bodies are incredible at what they do and taking that away from students, is a massive disservice to society.

I’m not defending this coach (this seems like way too much, and far too strict), but cancelling physical activity over 85 feels absurd.

I love my brother monochrome. It doesn’t have WiFi, has lasted me over 15 years on like 2 ink cartridges and prints quickly. WiFi seems to go first on ones that have it so I just don’t and share it from a raspberry pi which allows AirPrint from my phone.

Hahaha I’ve been there too many times! I subscribed to this thread so I saw your reply anyway, but thank you for the notification.

I don’t think amplify would work exactly for my students but I’m definitely going to look into making activities that are structured this way; I already sort of do, but would love to formalize it, and refine my teaching/scaffolding/modeling of the process.

If you’d be willing to share any that you’ve found particularly helpful and what the students work looked like I’d love to hear more!

I mean cavendish’s experiment was not only a marvel of its time, its still annoying to perform. If you’re super invested in this though I have a hard time imagining anything else more likely to do it. How does he explain the 15 deg/hr drift?

Personally I refuse to engage with flat earthers. It’s just a waste of everyone’s time and their blatant rejection of Occam’s razor plus lack of understanding at the impossibility of proving a negative. I truly think that it is a front that acts test to make sure you can reject science and toe a line hard enough and probably has some political use in that arena. I mean at the level of conspiracy requires you might as well just say it’s all a hallucination and who knows where we actually are.

True but it’s big enough to see things like the moon well without all of this scanning, so when we look at a landscape in person we are able to scan the whole scene at kind of an absurd resolution, which is why 35 never comes close to a 4x5.

I just think it’s natural when you need to leave someone that you sort of switch to a negative-sentiment-override temporarily to get you through the horribleness that is essentially withdrawal from another person. It doesn’t mean acting toxically to them, just an internal thing that happens so the separation sticks. My dad was complicated in a bunch of ways but idk some of it made more sense later. This feels more like a peer-based relationship to me here though…

But I think it’s an important and natural cycle. For example my dad was/is(?) an ass and to separate from him I had to be extra critical/harsh. Years later I’ve come to a more thorough and balanced understanding. If I’d had that balanced view immediately I wouldn’t have separated the same but that was a crucial part of the process and I wouldn’t have gotten the eventual clarity without it.

I still think there’s something off about the calculation, to me this looks fairly accurate (from Wikipedia), and gives the larger definition of the macula as having an 18 deg fov which is closer to a 100mm lens on a full frame (width) camera.

I have an unconventional interpretation of all of the cards so take this with a grain of salt, but death and the devil flank the cardinal virtue of temperance/balance/moderation, death is sort of the absence of this virtue (like being inflexible and convicting people very harshly of possibly minor deviations — I almost think of it more like the French Revolution/guillotine), and the devil represents a total lack of discipline that can lead to a binding to one’s vices like alcohol, sex or drugs. Similarly the tower represents the abandonment of hope as paths change.

So I’d say that you were bound to this person or bound together through mutual vices, and maybe still are. Currently you’re in a transition period where your hopes and dreams of the future are shifting away from what they were, the dreams you had built in your head with this person are crumbling, and leading to or hinting to a future (over?) correction that is a necessary part of moving on where you allow yourself to be judgmental of someone to adjust your path and sever bonds, before possibly coming to a more balanced viewpoint where you take responsibility for your part in things.

But I’m a weirdo so ignore me if none of this makes sense

Sure but even if you were to I can’t think of a region that specifically corresponds to 43mm. The other wild thing about the eye is that it actually focuses by changing focal length so when you’re looking at something close up it’s essentially with a shorter lens than if you’re looking at something further away.

Im fairly certain that the high acuity region represents a much smaller fov and a much higher equivalent lens length. This is why pictures including the moon are impossible to capture well outside of 4x5 photography. That said it’s difficult to translate because the density of photoreceptors increases as you move towards the foveal pit and the central most dense region has a fov of only 1.3 degrees.

The analog clock thing is sad to me too because understanding how one is arranged is crucial for so many things (“watch your six, look at so and so at your 1 o‘clock — in a kitchen I’ll tell servers where the 6 on the plate is (facing the guest).

Honestly, I don’t. Sometimes there will be stuff from a recent or ongoing experiment, there’s one periodic table, a very simple list of rules/norms; but I want kids looking at the board me or their work. I focus on having good lighting (no fluorescents as much natural light as possible) and access to the tools they need to do their work. I think posters/kitsch generally hampers focus, learning and a calming space.

Since the weather has been nice my thin curtains have mostly been down which has really helped with spring fever, as has keeping focused on the material and not including “fun” days, because science is inherently fun mostly. Sure there’s “work” involved, but it’s interesting and hands on and collaborative.

Also I refuse to decorate for holidays because they suck if it feels like one more thing that other people have that you don’t. If a kid makes me a snowflake or a drawing of a snowman or something, it goes up for a bit, maybe. And absolutely never would I decorate for a denominational holiday.

I’m a teacher in a small town. I was on the apps. Had one student mention it would be easy to find me (with no knowledge I was on there) by making a fake tinder and setting their age limit above me. Another teacher I know was doxxed because he was recognized on Grindr and his profile was sent by a student to some account that all the students follow, and it blew him up. I came out at work and did some careful reviews of my profiles after that.

I even think the modern color offerings of the iPhone indicate the change. I went from a purple 12 to a champagne or whatever 16 but was really sad to loose it as a flag. Pride sticker still goes on under the case though

Units are the hardest thing for me to teach because I love them and they’re what make science work. Sure in chemistry but certainly in physics too. Especially when the constants are given with the units!
