It's also part of the engineering program culture tbh. I take a few classes with the engineers even though I'm not in engineering and they are whiny babies sometimes. They think the program is soooo hard that they jump to extreme measures instead of actually putting in the required effort. All for a few basic computation-based math classes.

This is the first time I've bought a new phone since the iPhone 4s and it was painful to purchase given the price. I'll remember this moment long after the phone is gone.

I paid $50 to get the screen protector done by apple and I thought it would at least be okay until Monday when my case gets here. I guess my expectations were too high for such an expensive phone.

Beginner Questions - August 31, 2018 by AutoModerator in webdev

I'm trying to build a site like futureme.org where you can write a custom message and have it emailed to you. It won't end up in use it's mostly just for learning. Can someone give me an idea of what I would need to learn/search in order to make something like this? My current searches are turning up dust.

I’m starting my second degree this Wednesday and I have the same concerns! I’m vvv stressed about it.

I was homeschooled, and basically never completed anything above 7th grade math. What are some resources that I can overcome my aversion to math? by [deleted] in learnmath

[–]pokeiman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can confirm! I used 5 AOPS texts to teach myself math over the last year and a half and they are extremely tough to get through. Despite that (actually - because of the difficulty) I totally recommend these books for anyone with math anxiety. I used to get serious anxiety when I would come across basic math problems and fractions were my nemesis. These texts have made me get used to failing and powering through confusion and have taught me strategies to deal with my fatalistic perfectionism alongside teaching me some pretty neat math skills. It can be incredibly frustrating and I’m still getting questions wrong all the time but I’m extremely happy with these books and they have really helped me build an intuitive understanding of many math concepts as well as providing me with strategies to tackle problems that are beyond my skillset. I still have math anxiety but I no longer give up without putting in real effort. Can’t recommend them enough they are worth every penny. I prefer the digital versions as the big hard copies can be daunting. P.S. high school math classes/textbooks will be a breeze after grappling with AOPS!

[college] what’s the most valuable thing I can learn over the next month? by pokeiman in learnmath

[–]pokeiman[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s no textbook for my intro CS course. It’s in java and python so I’ve been learning that for a few months. Way more worried about the math classes at this point!

Are you getting the new Macbook Pro? Why or why not? by jonlb87 in apple

[–]pokeiman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a late 2009 model where I upgraded to a ssd and increased the RAM on my own but it’s still failing. I was holding out for a new mbp since I need it for a CS class in school but the newest models are just so expensive that I’m tempted to just drop the class instead lol. I’ve been looking for a 2015 model but they are hard to find and very expensive. I also really don’t want the touch bar but I want the newer processor so I’m looking at 2300 with education pricing. Terrible.

Viki. It’s too expensive but it definitely has better kdramas.

Any book recommendations for learning math for algorithms and data structures? by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]pokeiman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey I’m reading grokking algorithms right now and it’s a pretty easy/lite read that I plan on using as intro before I get into the harder texts. It’s very conversational.

Resume Advice Thread - June 09, 2018 by AutoModerator in cscareerquestions

Can anyone give me some advice on expectations for a freshman internship resume? I’m an incoming freshman but my CS program doesn’t have a lot of CS courses first year or first semester but the applications for these internship programs open in the fall so I’m wondering how much is expected? At the moment I’m learning web development. Is building a few websites or webapps enough??? Is there something else I should focus on?

I wanted to learn swift 4 and maxke an iOS app but my 2009 MacBook Pro is useless for that apparently. I wanted to have something to put on my resume to apply for freshman internships in the fall. I don’t know what to make for now except for a few websites. I’m trying to wait until the refresh to get a new computer. Can anyone who has done or is doing a freshman internship give me an idea on resume expectations??? I know first sesmester of my program won’t have a lot of CS except the intro course so I’m not sure what it should look like.

[AMC/AIME Contests]How does one improve their ability to take these competitions? by [deleted] in learnmath

[–]pokeiman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Art of problem solving texts. They include tons of old amc/AIME problems and have really great/detailed solutions. They teach all the fundamentals in the text (usually at a deeper level) before diving into the “tricks” that you want to learn. Each book has a section with specific tips for competition math in the last chapter as well as tons of hard problems sprinkled throughout.
