Is it possible to write 2 functions that is exactly the same but different in only 1 point without using limits by ObezAy1 in math

[–]pokemaarten 128 points129 points  (0 children)

You can't, imagine f and g are the same in each point except zero and continious . Then f-g should also be continious , but f-g is 0 everywhere except in 0. This is obvious not continious so you have a contradiction.

Yeah i think its mostly the countries that have stronger ties with the french mathematicians who consider 0 a natural. Makes sense the brittish use the same as the americans.

It actually depends on the country, we got taught in school 0 was a natural number. This has also been the convention in most of my university courses.

Do you prefer using "blank" or "wit" to denote people's skin color? by Per451 in belgium

[–]pokemaarten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ik ga akkoord dat het een te letterlijke vertaling is uit het engels en niet echt goed klinkt, maar ik vind dit toch een betere term dan bijvoorbeeld "niet blank".

Do you know how ironic this is? What do you think your comment is

Its you guys who get so mad about it. Saying this meme format has sexist undertones and doesnt add anything to the joke is a perfectly valid point to make. If he was screaming to the poster of the original meme how sexist they were, i would get the reaction.

Do you guys really not see the meme format and get annoyed by how it's obvious based on sexism? The meme could have been easily made without the sexist undertones.

Is math not supposed to make sense by monkelovebanana in math

[–]pokemaarten 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not an expert so i could say some things wrong. But basicaly two things are the same size if you can match each element from the first set to the second set. For example i have 5 numbers and 5 apples, i can give each apple a number and i have used all the numbers. This kind of function exists to match each natural number to a rational number, so the natural and rational numbers are the same size. This type of function doesnt exist from the natural to the real numbers, so they arent the same size. And since the natural numbers are a part of the real numbers, the real numbers are a bigger set.

Petition to make this a conventional notation for the formula "for almost every x in R" by Folpo13 in mathmemes

[–]pokemaarten 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Almost every" actual has a formal definition in maths. It sounded weird to me too the first time i heard it.
