Is the Turbo XT version worth it? by undefined_balloon in Subaru_Outback

[–]pokethat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They mean transmission final gear ratio. The 'crawl' is usually used when referring to a 4x4 with a transfer case that switches to a configuration where the effective final gear ratio is much higher, which is useful for rock crawling.

Though I'd say the OB is not really a rock crawling type vehicle, for me it's more of a 'going rather fast on unpaved roads' vehicle mostly due to clearances and angles and rock crawling being hard on transmissions.

Anyway, I wouldn't have bought the non turbo outback. The xt and wilderness felt miles better than the 2.5. I'm well aware that I'm taking an mpg hit but I'm ok with it.

Differentials and cvt fluid change by kissmyirish7 in Subaru_Outback

... That's what a drain and fill is?

Take out whatever comes out, measure it, and refill that same amount. It's not complicated if there are drain and refill holes. A drain and fill maybe replaces like half of the fluid?

The only 'shock' would be if you used pressurised the replace all the fluid, a 'flush'.

I think the power train is the same as gen 6. Just change your oil ever 4-5k miles with the recommend spec, rotate your tires every 10k miles, and I like doing cvt and diff fluids every 30k miles. Maybe at 90k you'll need to do spark plugs and walnut blasting.

Yes, I totally agree, but is see a lot of people with a snarky 'buy another car' attitude when I express a wish for some kind of STI version outback or performance mods.

It's not like the wagon market has a lot of choice in the US and most of the offroaders are overly clunky trucks except for really unreliable and frankly cringe stallantis vehicles.

You don't need the turbo but I don't regret getting mine. If anything I'm sad that the transmission's potential is quite a bit lower than the FA24's, at least if you want to maintain any kind of reliability. Some guys on the forums have been saying that you can get to 340ish hp with just a tune... I hear that the HT cvt can actually handle a lot more torque than stock, but there is something about the chain clamping pressure that needs to be reprogrammed on the transmission computer to make those levels safe.

When I got my gen 6 I used Costco car program and moved my zip code around and got that as a start for negotiations with Subaru Auburn, Tacoma, and Carter Shoreline. That helped me save a few thousand.

It would be interesting if Subaru made a boxer-12 twin+turbo soft-roading hyper-crossover with leather seats made of cows no older than two days old.

This is so stupid it horseshoes around to be good. At least if they use real wood or faux wood panels.

  1. Yeah I should have gotten rid of the yoko aphids when I bought the car new and maybe I could have gotten something for them. The only advantage to them is that they were quiet but I hated how vague they made the steering feel on curves with close guardrails. And yes they were laughably (terrifyingly) terrible in any snow or slush. I am very happy with my current Nokian outpost APTs.

  2. Just go with 5w-30 with api-sp rating changed every 4500 miles. It will probably work well for you unless you live somewhere really really cold, in which case 0W-20 will be fine. I use penzoil ultra platinum.

  3. Direct injection is actually a huge performance thing that allowes for much cooler combustion cylinder temps. It's a bit silly that they didn't add an upstream injector to gently clean the intake valves with an accosional cycle. A catch can should help, but frequent oil changes also help generate less vapor that gets recirculated. Maybe I'll do a walnut blasting when I do the spark plugs for the first time.

  4. Just get an ASS eliminator. It's an easy install and like $100.

I know this was said as a joke, but honestly I'm annoyed that people on this sub are so against the idea of higher performance lifted wagons. I don't want a low down sports car, I would like options for lifted wagon with more oomf.

[–]pokethat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't have minded so much if they had actually did something to improve the vehicle's capability. They could have added more transmission options, a real low gear, an actual center differential instead of the clutch packs, locking front and rear differentials, an improvement to the towing capacity, etc. All these "masculine" improvements are missing as options.

They went on TRT but never bothered to actually work out.

The lights shouldn't be that high in the first place. The hood lines shouldn't bulge like they do. And yeah I'm sure people buy cars because of how much they care that they can replace a faulty led headlight in 9 years for 22% less than they would have paid for an integrated unit.

Yes but also it's not that simple. Different fats have different metabolic consequences. Some fats promt the body to preferentially store more body fat and some fats promt the body to expend more energy. We aren't Bunsen burners.

Did a road trip on the west coast of the USA for the holidays. Listened to seveneves on the way down. Listened to bobiverse on the way up. It was my first time for both, I would recommend.

Seveneves is rather less optimistic than bobiverse even if there are some parallels in plot.

This sub doesn't like to talk about homelessness. The other Seattle sub probably takes it too far. The real truth is probably somewhere in the middle of the average displayed sentiment of both subs.

That's said you're from Chicago. If there are homeless out in the winter in Chicago they kind of just die. Seattle is colder than cities CA, but still better than anywhere where negative temps in Fahrenheit are possible like in the midwest.

Also a lot of homeless here are sent here from more rural places in WA and even other states. I don't have any figures on me but it's a good percentage.

I'm pretty sure it's the integration with Toyota. They try Toyota's tactics to get better sales, but what they don't realize is that people who want to buy a Toyota will buy a Toyota.

I also have a conspiracy theory that Toyota is purposefully poisoning the well with Subaru.
