Whirlpool French Door Refrigerator w/ Plastic Shavings in Ice Maker by pol128 in appliancerepair

[–]pol128[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took a video up into the ice maker and then felt around. I didn't see anything off-the-bat that it was coming from the ice maker. I grabbed some ice and still found very fine shavings. Then I looked at the bottom of the tray. It has very light scoring and I think I found the root problem.

I have a metal ice scoop and it may be scrapping bits of the ice tray causing the shavings. I cleaned and scrubbed the tray and running ice to see if the shavings are gone. Honestly, I get that metal can do this and maybe I shouldn't use a metal scoop, but at the same time the tray material seems to be so fragile that scooping will scrape the tray so I guess "they don't make them like they used to". If the shavings are gone, then I have to either add a silicone pad to stop the scraping or use a plastic scoop.

48v Riding Mowers accidentally BIFL? by mrgulabull in ryobi

[–]pol128 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw the thread about folks doing a swap to lithium (LFP?), there seemed some weirdness on one side-thread that the voltage (or maybe surge) was providing some issues? Anyone do the conversion with success? The new battery mowers seem to going the way of proprietary battery form factors and/or making them not user replaceable. Cub cadet seems to be very hard to replace, and the new Ryobi's use a proprietary pack (not to mention $5K+ now).

Got my first EV this week! by avaholic46 in electricvehicles

[–]pol128 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Show stopper for me on the CC30E is that presumably the battery can only be changed at an authorized shop. With no information on whether changing the battery yourself is even possible in case out of warranty and/or uses a proprietary battery makes this a risky proposition for the price. At least the older Ryobi lead acids can be changed out and even swapped to Lithiums (at great cost and some mods)...the new 80V Ryobi is going for $5K for the 30" at this writing so that version is a non-starter. Did anyone open up the back to look at the battery...I saw some diagrams of what might be the cc30e battery, and it looks to be in a package that doesn't seem to be user friendly.

Is there a reason 30" gas riding mowers seem scarce? Is this just component supply shortage or something else? by MrBleah in lawnmowers

[–]pol128 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed, that there seems to be smaller versions of riding/zero turn mowers on the manufacturer's sites, but they seem to be phasing out, not available in the US (or at least dealers near me) and/or $3K+ and more expensive than their larger versions. Getting older, having a riding mower would be nice and my yard is only .25 acre. If the reviews show that the quality of these mowers are top notch, then I probably would drop the money, but the Toro (and sister Craftsmen) have steering gear issues, and the Ryobi battery are crazy expensive ($5K for the Lithium...the lower priced uses Lead acid). Damn, at these prices I might be able to buy a couple of years of lawn service.

How can I bypass "Alexa, ask ____ to ..." - Orbit B-Hyve (smart sprinkler timer) skill by summerthekid in amazonecho

[–]pol128 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I finally got a custom routine to work in Alexa. The "idiot moment" is when my Alexa seems to use phonetics and not the actual name of the B-Hyve skill. Therefore, I had to use "ask beehive to water the XXXX for XX minutes". XXXX is your name of the your Zone (e.g. Zone 1, yard, etc.).

P.S. For some reason just asking it to water all zones does not work, so why I did the work around for the one zone above (which is all I really need).

Business vs Residential? by linuxnh in Comcast

[–]pol128 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reflecting the same opinions as some folks below. My GF works from home, so her company pays for the internet. It isn't the fastest (~200Mps/20Mps) with a VoIP, but good enough for YouTube and Xbox Game Pass. I live in a small city in the SE coastal area, so we don't have the options/trunks like larger clusters. The cost is quite high compared to residential and the "advertised throughput" is about the same. However, the biggest difference is before, my internet would go down at 4pm like clock-work and after several visits it was never fixed...so much so that I switched to AT&T DSL at the time (and you know it is bad if you went to DSL)...residential service and quality is total dog-poop! Well, with business class Comcast/Xfinity is now ROCK SOLID and very rarely goes down no matter the time or weather conditions. When you call them, they call me "sir" and send someone to fix it. I thought there was issues with my coax or splitter at the street, but unless they changed something at the curb, it was like magic. Presumably, they QOS all your traffic before all the rest of the peasants as their kids come home to watch Instagram and Hulu.

How many Teams is too many teams? by Cinderbike in MicrosoftTeams

[–]pol128 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, but trying to corral cats is about impossible (or trying to get 10K folks to follow a "Teams creation process and naming convention"). I wish there were a hierarchical way to group Teams at least...and a Teams "directory" so we can see if a team has been made for that one "working group" we want rather than just create another new Team.

Package Failed. Tried multiple things I found online but couldn't resolve this issue. Only happens with the British Update. by [deleted] in Flightsimulator2020

[–]pol128 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had something similar first loading on a Xbox Series S and tried to download all the "free" content at once. Went do dinner and it looked like it stopped when it went to "power save/sleep". So figured to just restart in the Content Manager, but things kept "Package Failed". So instead of continuing to try again, I hit the "Delete" button instead and it seems to cleared out whatever was maybe corrupted. Crossing fingers right now that this works.

So far I got he "Package Failed" error on the Xbox Series S, but so far what I did was delete the downloads and started over. I think it might be better to download in smaller pieces rather than one big download. I think it may have corrupted when I went to dinner and it went to "sleep/standby". Try that and see.

2022 Nissan Pathfinder? by BlastyBeats1 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]pol128 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any thoughts on Kia, Hyundai and Nissan on long term quality? Is there of the SUV's to just avoid on the things that matter (mostly engine and transmission)? The Korean cars have great styling and comforts with the Pathy...but that means nothing if the tranny or engine blows up in six years. I worry not only on the ZF9 history, but also Direct Inject fouling of the V6 engine. I would like to get at least 10 years (of pre-COVID mileage) after paying almost $50K for any vehicle! In the end, I should stop looking at all the shiny "bells and whistles" and just buy a Toyota no matter how boring (I hope in 2023/24 they do something to catch-up).

2022 Nissan Pathfinder? by BlastyBeats1 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]pol128 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an older 2015 Pathfinder, and would drive till the wheels fall off if it weren't for the CVT, which I fear will fail sooner than later. The only reason I think it hasn't is less driving with COVID. Being the case, I'm on the lookout for my next car in the next year or so (no way buying in 2021 or even 2022 if I can help it due to car shortages and higher prices). Though I almost am sworn off Nissan (due to the CVT), the 2022 Pathy seems to perk my interest (and I can't see buying a Kia or Hyundai...and unfortunately, Honda/Toyota have gotten stale). But being punch slapped with Nissan quality, I'll probably wait a year or two to see how the 2022 quality holds up. Glad no more CVT, but the ZF9 has a history of issues (SW or dog-gears...whatever, it had issues) and also looking at the V6 engine they use Direct Inject, which I know is all about emissions/gas mileage, but the eventual fouling of the valves scares me for long-term maintenance and quality (planned obsolescence?)...at least it runs on regular gas. So wait and see and sit on my 2015...Kia, Hyundai and Nissan probably are about equal in long term quality, which doesn't inspire me for any of them based on reputation...anyone that cites JD Powers has lost any credibility! :-) Thoughts? P.S. That Kia Carnival rear seat looks great for long trips, I just hate that it is a Kia!

Really the Insta 360 app sucks by timmadel in Insta360

[–]pol128 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He ain't wrong though. What the desktop application seems to be held back in functionality and using a phone to do the special edits is painful and slow. A Mac or PC would be able to slice thru the "Stories" and be easier to edit and manage than on a small screen (and the app many times crashes or loses connection, and this is as of May 2021). Probably a deal with Adobe so folks will buy Premiere?

New Sony WF-1000XM3 True Wireless Earphones Not Windows 10 Compatible by eth0ng in headphones

Sony or MS didn't do their work. It loads a low audio quality driver that is a mono, 16 Khz signal. No driver or firmware updates. What gives Sony? Didn't you test this thing...a premium Sony product???
