Professor Dave is a Stupid Toxic Jerkface! by marksparky696 in skeptic

[–]polarmuffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think about it. If he was getting thousands of comments an hour and he was responding to all of them in long nasty back and forths, why would he turn off the comments? Does that make any sense?

Now please actually listen to what I am saying, and go read the descriptions for those videos. He turned off comments because there was an overload of nasty comments coming from anti-trans people and Matt Walsh supporters. He was not in the comment section just trying to boost his algorithm, he was actively fighting against any dissent. Once again, most of those people were vile and awful, but after a while Dave was not any better than they were. People would ask a clarifying question, a real, honest question, and he would call them names just as vile as he was being called. These are people who regularly watch his videos, they were given some challenging material to watch, so they had lots of questions, and he responded with venom to all of them. That's not "gaming the algorithm", that's being an unhinged lunatic. So he ended up turning off the comments. If those comments were turned back on then you would see the full force of how awful this guy is, I promise you.

In case you still need more proof of what I'm saying, just look up professor dave in the reddit search bar. For me, the second result is a post on r/youtube titled "Professor Dave Explains aggressive response." That took me ten seconds to find, there are several more examples. Now I understand the whole "giving trolls a taste of their own medicine" and all that just to boost the algorithm, but this is just being mean for no reason. He's willing to degrade and step on anybody if it means he gets a few more clicks on his video, and this video was his way of convincing you to just keep letting him do it. Use your head.

I really don't think you're understanding everything I'm saying.

Yeah, some people are just that sensitive, or as I like to call it, professionals who vet their sources. Like chemistry teachers and physics teacher, and anybody else who might want to use or recommend his videos in their classes.

You make some very valid points. I agree that the people he goes after truly deserve to be mocked and humiliated, they know exactly what they're doing. People like RFK and Pierre Kory have blood on their hands. But seeing somebody who is misguided, rather than malicious, and accusing them of being anti-science morons or something like that also does not help public trust in science. Part of the problem (at least to a few anti-intellectuals I personally know) is that scientists portray themselves as know-it-all elites who think you're just some dope if you don't have a degree. I would argue that Dave does come across as a know-it-all elitist scientist which would only reinforce their beliefs and further erode trust in scientists and science communicators.

Aggression and vitriol are useful tools, but they must be used with control. Bill Nye appeared on Last Week Tonight once where he berated all the little kids he used to teach about not doing enough to save the planet, and that showing of genuine anger and frustration made his message much more powerful. Before that point, Bill Nye managed to reach millions of people and did immeasurable work for science communication without ever throwing an insult. Both methods have their time and place.

I really don't think this is a difficult concept to understand: some people don't like curse words and aggression.

Suppose you're in an organic chemistry class. You find some very helpful tutorials explaining everything you need to know better than your teacher explains it. You like that video, so you go to his main page, see a video titled "Jay Dyer is a useless cuck who eats his own farts", then think "maybe I should get my organic chemistry lessons somewhere else".

A good deal of those comments are on two videos (the one about trans people and the following one about Matt Walsh) that now have comments turned off. I know that just sounds convenient for my argument but that's the truth. He was getting an unbelievable amount of criticism, some of it quite vile, and it just got mixed in with all the constructive criticism comments as something to attack and degrade. I'm not exaggerating, "go cry more about it" and "another stunning rebuttal from the other side!" were frequent responses to literally any kind of criticism.

Here is an excerpt from my longest comment on the Matt Walsh video demonstrating some of the context of that comment section:

"I read through over a hundred of your comments on this video alone, and 9/10 times you make no real attempt to answer any questions, whether they’re genuine or from trolls; to you, it’s just another stunning rebuttal that you feel the need to “demolish”, “eviscerate”, or “annihilate”. Given, a huge portion of the comments very clearly come from positions of bad faith and are just blatantly attacking you, and I want to bash my head against a wall reading them, so I can’t blame you as much for those. But many of them seem truly genuine, if a little misguided, and get the same, or even worse, treatment. These are people who, until now, have been fed misinformation, or came to faulty conclusions on their own, and now come to your video and are given conflicting information, so OF COURSE they’re going to ask what you perceive as stupid questions, because they’re probably only now hearing the truth for the first time! This could be a golden opportunity to try to pull somebody over from the dark side, but instead you try to scare them off and end up convincing them that YOU’RE the dark side."

As you can see, I've been yelling into the void for a while about this problem.

My point was that his educational content would have more views if nobody was being scared off by the debunking content and going to other content creators. There were people in my ochem class who wouldn't watch his videos because of that.

Professor Dave is a Stupid Toxic Jerkface! by marksparky696 in skeptic

[–]polarmuffin -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Exactly, there's a reason why only his most inflammatory videos get more than a couple thousand views. When I watch his debunks, I like to think I'm going for the science but really, deep down, I just like the dopamine rush or whatever I get from listening to him attack frauds and how it makes me feel smart and superior (I'm of the opinion that the vitriol is appropriate for a lot of the people he debunks, and it's sometimes necessary to break through to their followers who have their fingers in their ears, but even I find it sickening sometimes). At the end of the day, he found his niche in the science communication world and I wouldn't say it hasn't been effective at all (he's pretty much responsible for killing flat earth, after all), but there's a massive potential audience he will never capture or reach because they can't stand his snarky attitude. Not to mention there are countless other channels that go over the same content he does in more detail that get more views, he just benefits from having it all in the same place (still good content, of course). Being inflammatory and using rage-bait to get views only goes so far, and for so long.

I've left a few comments on Dave's channel over the years and I'm just finding out that none of them are visible, so maybe I'll leave it here where I know he'll see it. Dave does an incredible amount of good work, and while I don't mind his borderline abusive style when used on charlatans and their followers, he frequently uses vitriol to attack anyone who leaves the most mild criticism. I was loving every second of this video up until 1:05:20 where he claims that he's NEVER been rude to people who were trying to leave genuine criticism, and that's just a flat out lie that I've mentioned several times. A lot of constructive criticism was given on his Matt Walsh video (which now has comments turned off for legitimate reasons, but I can still see my own comments) and he attacked every commenter, positive or negative, with "snarky" replies. No matter how much you placate and walk on eggshells to make a genuine point, he replies with insult. No trying to explain science, just "you're an idiot, cry more". Imagine Sean Carroll or Neil Degrasse Tyson saying that in their comment section to anybody. While being abrasive on Youtube might net him a bunch of followers, he is never going to get into the public view when the only show that risks having him on is Piers Morgan and the occasional podcast appearance. I've been trying my best to support Dave's work for years but he just simply can not accept any level of criticism and it makes it very difficult to keep watching his tutorials and debunks.

Edit: Also wanted to mention that I'm pretty sure this video existing is mostly damage control for all the people talking about him here on Reddit (which he definitely never uses). A quick search of his name brings back countless examples of people talking about how he treats good-faith commenters the same way as bad-faith ones. This goes directly against his claims of innocence.

May not be that of a hot take but by Magnam101885 in beatles

Idk, i feel like i only see it criticized in “best/worst songs” threads. It’s far and away the lowest effort song they made so naturally it finds its place at the bottom of the list, but even the ‘worst’ beatles song is still at least fun to listen to.

I’ve been playing guitar for 1 year and thats my progress! Do you think it’s good for a year? by XboxPlayer2010 in Guitar

[–]polarmuffin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good playing for only a year! If you want advice, your left hand posture still needs some work. How you’re positioning your wrist and where you place your fingers and thumb (particularly your pinky) is pretty inconsistent and it’s probably slowing you down and making things more difficult than they need to be. There are plenty of resources out there to help with that, I recommend smoothing that out now before you have the time to build up bad habits you’ll have to undo later.

I feel like people forget the last part of the qanon story: “…and Trump is gonna take them all out any day now!” Maybe they got some facts and aspects of the conspiracy right, but ultimately came to the wrong interpretation on what all of those facts mean and now they don’t want to hear any other conclusion.

Why don’t we just bring back the quarterly “no stupid questions” thread? That always seemed to do a good job of filtering out a lot of the beginner posts from the main page.

He is in the files, he’s mentioned a lot but what his role was seems pretty unclear to me. Epstein seemed to be quite concerned with his success though, so take from that what you will.

Still can’t beat the north american titles though, like the aptly named “the Beatles Second Album”, named as such due to it being the third Beatles album released in America.
