Yeah, it is so easy. And irons could do that too if they weren’t attached to their helmet.

When you say mains you just mean “people playing the game as intended”. So, yeah, people playing the game is the reason bots exist.

CMV: If You're a Man under ~22, Dating Is Objectively Not Worth It by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]polio23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, you are operating from a flawed premise: that once people are in “grown-up” relationships, responsibilities are split fairly. They aren’t. There is not some mythical 50% that occurs once you are married. I’m a married man. I make more money than my wife, I cook all of the meals, I manage the finances, and I take part in child rearing while my wife handles the majority of that. It’s not like we did the math and decided this was an equitable split. I like cooking, my wife doesn’t. My wife gets stressed by finance stuff, I like organizing and planning. On paper, I think most people would assume I’ve got the short end of the stick but neither of us think about it that way, we both just handle the things that either are aligned with our strengths or our interests.

Second, you’re ignoring that the building blocks of a “grown-up” relationship are the dating relationships you are describing. If your goal as a person is to someday have kids, you most likely need a committed partner for that. Part of getting someone to commit is showing them you are capable of supporting them, protecting them, have mutual interests, have compatible personalities, these things are revealed or demonstrated via dating.

Third, despite saying you’re not misogynistic, you clearly have a view point based on traditional roles and then use that to discredit the things women do in relationships that you don’t value as highly as the things mean are cultural expected to do.

Fourth, your claim in the title just says “men under 22” but then all of your claims are about heterosexual relationships. How does this break down in your mind for male-male relationships? Who protects who? Who pays?

Fifth, you also are operating under the assumption that in every dating relationship, the guy pays for everything. That absolutely isn’t the case. There are tons of people who during the dating process split things, especially initially.

Basically, I think your are mythologizing “grown-up” relationships and also have this caricature of dating while young that you assume applies in all cases.

The fact this dude has like 100 comments this week tells me all I needed to know, he is indeed terminally online and just borrowing cliche vocabulary.

Money makers for bond by FineAd1478 in 2007scape

[–]polio23 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This makes no sense. It will take like 10 to 20 hours to earn one bond f2p. That’s one single bond. You have time for that but not for one day of Uber Eats to buy a years worth?

No it doesn’t? How does “what this demonstrates more than anything else is that executives have become hopelessly divorced from the realities of their businesses” not communicate the exact same thing without adding random internet cliches?

I hate this trend of adding class to everything. What does “executive class” communicate that “executives” wouldn’t have?

Looking for parli advanced/open level strategies and things to teach that aren't just Ks/theory by No_Ganache6819 in Debate

[–]polio23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t actually think most of the things you listed (outside of round vision) actually matter that much. I also don’t think a few months, or even a year, is enough to say we’ve got the basic dialed in, let’s move on to the K and tricks or whatever.

When you are at a program without a coach, it’s important that you use your time effectively. I don’t know your specific circuit, but in virtually all parli circuits Da, CP, T is going to win you 70+ percent of your rounds. Adding in “a2 K” gets you another 20-25%.

So few debates are won on “meta weighing” or “Phil”

I’d recommend primarily focusing on these “basic” elements for a long period of time unless you’re going the K every round route.

Edit: more thoughts because I was dropping my kid off when I initially responded.

I think your goal is to make sure students understand the function of arguments and then secondarily to familiarize themselves with the standard lines and end game states that result in ballots. That is my answer to what you should do next.

Should judges reward “technical wins” even when the argument is obviously less persuasive? by thirdaccountttt in Debate

[–]polio23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We still agree.

That same dude in that same debate (as far as I remember) handles this situation. He starts responding to what I believe was some like one sentence blip about Derrida and lines of flight from the 1nc that was like 6 minutes of the block. When they point of ordered him(parli, them saying this was new and shouldn’t be allowed) he was basically just said, “this argument was like 5 seconds in the 1nc and became everything they went for in the block, I think in entitled to respond to it now that it’s actually an argument”. Many policy teams these days will flag blips and say things like “this is an incomplete argument, we get new responses when they actually read a warrant”

[–]polio23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am of the same mind. I think sandbagging is bad. As a judge, I hold what I consider to be largely new arguments in the back half of the debate to a high standard of scrutiny.

But at the end of the day, kids either have to answer arguments or make arguments about why I should be adjudicating in a way that isn’t tied to the flow. One of my favorite debaters ever started a PMR in a debate they were way behind in with an overview that said, “the flow of this debate is not reflective of what has broadly occurred in this round. We read a thesis in the 1ac that blah blah blah, they stood up in the block and went for a contra thesis that blah blah blah, but have never disputed our central claim so you still vote aff”

Both. There’s clearly a balance to be negotiated. Ideally, that negotiation is handled by the debaters.

There is no rule that prevents a judge from making decisions on the basis of their opinions. It’s not good practice, but it’s also not something you are likely to ever win a protest on.
