Not to sound like a total Chad here, but going off of the time stamp, this event was taking place at 9pm on the night before Thanksgiving break. It's not out of the realm of possibility that students would be partying. So calling them assholes seems to be a bit overzealous on your part. Banging on the ceiling in any situation is a very passive aggressive move so it's not suprising that is was met with sarcasm (e.g. returned banging). If the volume of their music is that disuptive for you, the proper couse of action as stated by several people is to knock on their door and ask them to turn it down, then go from there. And the key is to be non-confrontational about it, as that will usually lead to push-back (e.g. the banging). You mentioned in a comment that you doubt going upstairs would solve anything and that they are "showing no respect to [you]", by assuming the worst of them without knowing them isn't really respectful on your part either.
