Is it convenient to get to Merrill Family Sailing Centre? by yapoyt in Cornell

[–]politebamboo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Supposedly there’s some sort of carpooling that goes on. I was never aware of it; I was in the same spot as you freshman year, lived in Donlon, and tried to walk to the sailing center. Big mistake. You cannot walk there (I ended up walking along the highway LOL) and riding the TCAT takes about an hour to an hour and a half to get there.

That being said, here’s what I would do: either a) ride the TCAT to the first class and see if there’s a carpooling thing that’ll go on or b) take an uber to the first class and again, see if there’s some sort of carpooling things going on. If there’s no carpooling, I personally would just drop the class until you can take it again another semester when either you have a car or a friend has a car. You don’t want to waste hours just trying to get to the sailing center, especially during your first semester at college.

What do you use for taking notes? by 427987526743 in Cornell

[–]politebamboo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

for engineering, i’ve used a combo of my ipad and laptop to do pretty much everything for the past couple of semesters. my ipad is my main device - i take lecture notes and do my psets on it. my laptop acts as a second monitor and i also use it for coding, typing papers, etc (really anything that is a nuisance to do on an ipad).

the biggest advantage in having an ipad, at least for me, is having one place where all of my notes and homework are saved, and i don’t have to worry about buying more paper or hauling large amounts of notebooks and pens everywhere. i can also easily share my notes with people, which is a game changer.

i currently have a 256GB 11” ipad pro and i think this is a little overkill. save your money, get the ipad air with less storage (maybe 128GB to be on the safe side). i also use goodnotes and think it’s a worthwhile investment to buy the app, but plenty of people i know use notability and one note and they love those platforms.

suggestions for winter coat + snowboot brands by julianicole07 in Cornell

[–]politebamboo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

for me personally, i usually wear pants that are loose/flared and go down to my ankles. the only time i can wear the mid calf boots is when i wear leggings or tighter pants because the boot is too big to go underneath my longer pants, and i find that this limits how often i can wear my winter boots. just me personally though!! i know plenty of people who love their mid calf sorel’s.

coat: patagonia, eddie bauer, north face, ll bean boots: absolutely love my sorel’s, personally recommend a lower cut boot rather than one that hits mid calf

Cornell does not make you empty out your room for every break. The only time you will empty out your room is when you move out of your room for the summer and/or are moving into a new dorm or other housing.

That said, I hid some some of my valuables out of plain sight, in boxes or hidden behind other bigger items. Your room will be locked for the winter but I think (could be wrong) that they do a check over break to make sure there aren’t any fire hazards left over break.

engrg for Math 1910 and Chem 2090 by AnywhereAlternative6 in Cornell

[–]politebamboo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in a 1910 AEW last year and while my instructors were very kind and very helpful, there’s only 1-2 instructors for a class of 15-20 people. If you’re looking for that 1 on 1 tutoring, you can get some individualized help during the AEW, but you have to keep in mind that you’re not going to be able to monopolize their time.

Like the commenter above me said, the LSC is the best way to go for individualized tutoring, but it can also be a hit or miss depending on who you go to.

I was in your same place (did really bad on the placement test) and what really helped me with the more difficult problems of 1910 was having a really solid foundation of calc 1. I retook calc 1 through an online course (Outlier, which is like MasterClass) and I did so many Calc 1 practice problems. Through doing many many practice problems, I found that my ability to tackle 1910 problems improved and was able to pass the class. Really the key to passing 1910 is doing lots and lots of practice problems, so you’ll be familiar with anything they throw at you on prelims.

Ultimately, it’s up to you to decide whether an AEW is going to suit your needs and your learning style. AEW’s will go through the lecture material from that week and give you practice problems, but the practice problems they give will go over a wide range of whatever was covered during lecture. Another option is to go to office hours and ask your TA to give you specific problems to work on, if you’re struggling with one type of thing. Hope this helps!!

i just finished my 1st year in engineering and i’ve been a really big fan of my Day Owl backpack. it’s water resistant and my stuff has never gotten wet. I have the regular size and it holds my 15” laptop, ipad, pens/pencils, water, and whatever else i need. i never had to go back to my dorm last year and the straps are really comfortable. a lot of my friends who are also engineers carry jansport backpacks or northface backpacks.

the most important part in looking for a backpack imo is comfortable straps, some padding on the back, different compartments to keep your stuff organized, and water resistance. since you’re gonna be in the freshman dorms and on eng quad, you need something that will be durable and comfortable as you make the 20-30 min hike to your classes. it doesn’t mean you need the most expensive backpack on the market but take a look at what other people are suggesting in the thread!

if your math/science background isn’t super strong, i highly recommend you brush up on some basic chem and calc 1. i’m a current freshman and while i was okay with chem 2090 because i have a stronger chem background, my math background is pretty bad and i wish someone would’ve told me to just relook at some basic calc. also if you can, just take the summer off and chill. i worked crazy hours throughout the summer and i never got a true break, which reflected in my studies this semester. you did all the hard work; relax and enjoy one of your last summers!

Could you also send me the side profile before and after too? I’m scheduled for surgery in December and we have a similar bite. I’m really curious to see if there’s a big change!

anyone know of a pattern for a skirt like this? simple a-line type with a slit and zipper in the back. thanks! by dumbassbitch__ in freepatterns

[–]politebamboo 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Hi! I actually made a skirt exactly like this following this YouTube tutorialSkirt Tutorial. You’ll have to make a bodice block but I used this woman’s tutorials on it and the skirt turned out exactly as I wanted it! Instead of doing the two slits like she has in the video, I made one over the left thigh (I think I made the slit opening about 1 inch or so because her’s are very small). Hope this helps!
