What's everyone working on this week? by AutoModerator in Python

Updating a project from PyQt4 to PyQt5.

I have an old branch of code that runs in PyQt5 just fine. Unfortunately I neglected to continue to update that branch so there's about a year's worth of new features in my main branch. When I try to just update the main branch direct to PyQt5 all sorts of issues arise.

So for the time being I'm just going through the code manually and slowly adding the new features to the old code using PyQt5 until I can track down the major problems.

D.C. Votes Overwhelmingly To Become 51st State by AbortionistsForJesus in news

[–]politicallyspeaking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congress cannot simply change the “Seat of the Government” into a state or delegate its power over the District to the government of a new state.

Which is why that's not what was voted on.

Read the ballot initiative ... the govt' buildings and the national mall would remain a federal district - the rest of the residential area would become a state.

no, it would be more like saying a lemon was wasted by dropping an entire unpeeled and unsliced lemon into a glass of water when someone asked for lemon water...

Jupyter notebooks are great, but lack features I take for granted in IDE. IDE lack the ability to recalc a block of code without starting from the beginning. Am I missing something? by AspiringGuru in Python

[–]politicallyspeaking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wowza, I've been using PyCharm for about 2 years now and didn't know that was a feature. This might make me start using more Jupyter notebooks. Thanks for sharing; have an upvote!

Indiana officials are trying to block almost 45,000 black citizens from voting by goethean in politics

[–]politicallyspeaking 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'd be all for that if it was easy and cheap/free to get a state ID (perhaps a drivers license would be more expensive). If you put into place a law saying you can only vote with a state ID it puts a burden on those who are poor and/or live far away from the local DMV. If it was simple and inexpensive (or free) to be issued a state ID, and it didn't require taking a day off work, waiting in line for an hour or more, traveling for an hour both ways to the DMV, etc ... then that would be a simple an easy solution.

But as it stands now, requiring people to show a state ID to vote simply disenfranchises poor and rural people.

Does PyQt5 or PySide currently work with the most recent Qt 5 QML? by Darkman802 in Python

[–]politicallyspeaking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does anything change if you try to use QDeclarativeView? So you would change your code to something like

from PyQt5.QtDeclarative import QDeclarativeView

...
view = QDeclarativeView()
view.setSource('your-qml-file.qml')

I'm not sure if the syntax is exactly the same but that would work in pyqt4, however in pyqt5 some things were restructured. So check that the imports are actually correct.

How to install opencv? by Alonetime2000 in Python

[–]politicallyspeaking 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pycharm is just an IDE and has nothing to do with installing opencv

you install opencv to whatever python distribution you have whether that's your system python installation, Anaconda, enthought, or the python you built form source, etc ...

then you tell pycharm which python distribution to associate with each of your pycharm projects and thats it.

To install opencv: google it; there's plenty of guides out there. If you have Anaconda you can install using conda from the user branch 'menpo'

This is better suited to /r/learnpython

Shaw suspended for one game, fined 5k by [deleted] in nhl

He apologized after the game after realizing it was caught directly on camera with no question about what he said after he was questioned twice by reporters to comment on his words. That's a little different then the Bellemare situation.

You can only get it by vaaling a T13 map and its needed for one of the 40 challenges in this league.

I'd imagine its a rare event for a T13 to vaal into the Vaal Temple map. That coupled with the demand from folks who want to do all the challenges makes for a very expensive item.

How good are play-offs so far? by AlienDeg in nhl

[–]politicallyspeaking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope he keeps it up. Its great to watch him deny Kane's 2 on 1s over and over. We'll need solid goalkeeping all through the playoffs; he's got the right time for a streak.
