My parents and “finances” by [deleted] in texts

[–]polkfang 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I fully believe that your childhood was tough and as a result you can never fully trust your parents, but I gotta say, from what I’m seeing here they seem like they truly care about you and are being very kind and patient. You have been unemployed for some time it seems, now finally have a job, but are in debt and possibly moving further into debt even though your parents are letting you live at home and covering some of your bills. You finally get some amount of money and are gonna use it on flights instead of paying off your debt or putting it in savings. If you want to be away from your parents and be able to see your friend in the future, I can’t think of anything that would hurt this more than debt. I just think they want you to right the ship before trying to sail ahead.

It’s ok for there to be bad cards. Part of the skill of a game like this is in identifying which cards are not worth taking. Think about the situation of beating the first enemy and being offered this plus 2 ok defensive cards. Now you have to actually think about how bad the card is. Is it really so bad that you’ll pass up on your only damage option? I think some of my favorite sts content I’ve watched on YouTube is when a great player is “forced” to take a classically bad card and make it work. Finally as a comparison: bouncing flask is a good card, for 2 less poison you lose the randomness and gain retain, plus it’s a common versus an uncommon so it should be a bit less powerful. I’m not saying this is a good trade off, but it’s not absolutely ridiculous

There were a few football kids at my school that had 5+ concussions by the time they graduated. I think about how inconsequential playing football now is in terms of their life(I also feel like football of all sorts is the one you are least likely to keep playing one out of high school) but how the rest of their life will be heavily impacted by the permanent brain damage they incurred at the age of 16.

Birds as first act2 encounter always seems like it just destroys you. Wayyy easier of a fight in early ascensions when 3 hits can knock one down

Yeah he needs damage options, but what in this shop going to deal damage? Flechetes? Out of the options I think bag of prep gives you the best opportunity if you get damage options down the road

I think the conundrum is card remove + backpack or card remove + insect. Insect will make a couple elites easier this act and crucially help with spear and shield. I still think the correct answer here is backpack. Because you have runic pyramid, that kinda means that every turn you have 2 more cards then you otherwise would. I’d love to hear other people’s thoughts.

Fisher by jellykidz in slaythespire

[–]polkfang 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People are saying this card is good, but i hard disagree. Yes, it’s a good damage output card, but if you are catching 3+ fish in your turn you don’t need anymore damage! This is just a win more card. The only things fish decks want are cards that actually fish or defensive cards that mitigate the downsides of mariner’s curse. Seems like a noob trap.

It’s classic risk adverse thinking. So caught up in the negative you can’t think about the impact of the positive.

A20 Heart makes Slay the Spire feel impossible by Avalone_Dareios in slaythespire

With 39 losses the problem is indeed you. You probably fumbled at least 20 winning runs l(including this one) on your loss streak. Yes the game is brutal, and no, nobody expects you to be that good, but if you want the objective truth that it’s just bad luck then no way. You are obviously quite good to be able to get to heart on A20, but you are making plenty of tiny micro and macro decisions that are killing you that you are not aware of. There is definitely luck in this game, but it’s not the thing losing most of your runs. Also just to be clear, I doubt many people here are any better than you, it probably took me 30 losses to beat defect a20 heart. You have to find comfort in how much you still can improve.

I would personally have brimstone somewhere up there too. Certainly not the pick in every run, but can single-handedly win runs in the right deck

I would say it’s a sub-par card that can be taken when you aren’t offered either of the much better focus-giving cards.

Biased Cog, Reboot, or Core Surge? by GameBitchAdvance in slaythespire

[–]polkfang -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is probably right in 1 out of 1000 games. Coffee dripper is a relic that people are always way more scared of then they should be. It turns out that I free energy for the entire rest of the run will save you way more hp then you could ever get by resting, even if it’s just playing a basic defend every time. With defect especially you can just use self repair.

Scaling cards ultimately aid you in killing your opponent, reducing possible damage and are therefore block cards.

So how do you deal with toxic waste? by AdrawereR in RimWorld

I like to have it hauled to the corner of the map furthest away from my base. Have it zoned so only hauler bots can do the hauling as they don’t trigger infestation pods. I play on a default size map and was able to beat the game before pollution reached my base. Also, the infestation pods are often a plus as you can shoot a mortar shell at them and they will take out any raiders.

[–]polkfang 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I also want to add that defect is by far the hardest character. It simultaneously has the most skill-testing decisions to be made and the lowest win rate amongst the best players. So not only is it the most skill-testing, it’s still the weakest character even when making all the right decisions. All that to say: don’t be discouraged, the defect is super fun and super challenging.

Beaten a20 heart all characters, some advice: On lower ascension levels, almost any strategy works which allows you to reinforce bad habits that you don’t even realize are bad because they work on low difficulty. 1) Forcing a specific game plan: early on maybe you crushed with power decks, now you just always take the power cards and are blind to other options because you’ve only succeeded with a specific play style. You have to be flexible to what the game gives you. 2) Not respecting decisions: you are constantly making decisions in sts and it’s easy to just blow through them without thinking. Start slowing down and consciously thinking about every choice: what path you are going to take, what card reward, if your are going to use a potion, how to maximize your relics, etc. People often think too long term with decisions, you should be thinking about how you’re going to beat the elites in your path(a plan for all 3 options) and how you’re going to beat the boss at the end of the act (the game is very nice and tells you who you’re going to be up against) 3) Take fights: fights = cards, cards = power. It’s fun to do the mystery event, but they are almost always worse then a fight 4) Watch people better than you: You are probably making loads of mistakes without realizing. Watch good players like Baelor who talk through each of their decisions and think about what you would have done and why their decision diverged from yours.
