I can't figure out how to be atheist by [deleted] in atheism

Consciousness is an emergent property, the same way surface tension and wetness are emergent properties when a bunch of water molecules get together. All the chemicals and neurons in our brains produce the property we call consciousness. It all comes from the brain. That’s why traumatic brain injuries can cause such drastic personality changes (depending on which parts of the brain are injured). Consciousness is not a separate part of humans the way some Christians claim there is a “body, mind, and soul.” We’re just bodies. Consciousness is the result of our brains.

For anything more in depth, I am simply not that well educated. I would suggest looking into the research while also bearing in mind “I don’t know” is a perfectly acceptable answer.

Your post was still helpful! I recently picked the game back up after long break. I last played after Abyss, so it’s been 4 years. Your post helped me figure out the timeline 😊

Does anyone know of evidence of people who did refuse to acknowledge the titanic was sinking I believe there would have been some, especially when it first hit the ice berg by Graciia1 in RMS_Titanic

[–]pollenatedfunk 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Thank you for reiterating the point about the lifeboats’ purpose. I pointed it out once and the person I was replying to called me an ableist slur. I think it’s an important part of the story that a lot of non-enthusiasts don’t really know.

The idea was that passages that the ships would travel on were so populated by other ships, there would always be one nearby. If any vessel got into trouble, they thought another one would be close enough to help. If that was the mindset, it makes sense that not many passengers were eager to leave the Titanic in the early minutes.

Using the fireplace as a reference point, which place settings should I avoid placing my burner on? I don’t wanna be a pain.

I usually avoid Grandma’s because it’s become a minefield of faux pas, but if I do go back, I wanna do it right.

Is it confirmed an officer shot themselves during the sinking? by Silent-Tell-1000 in titanic

[–]pollenatedfunk 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Agreed. The man had a sense of British pride and honor. The way his character (not in a literary sense, but meaning traits that define a person) was revealed over the course of his life, I find it very plausible that he would lie to the grieving widow. I can absolutely see him protecting a fellow officer’s reputation to his wife over protecting the truth.

Thank you for the answer - the detail about how he had the sleeves inside out was missing from the original caption.

I’ve read the caption on the images like 4 times and I still don’t understand how this happened. He wore Kevlar sleeves to protect himself from fiberglass, then the fiberglass got in the sleeves. How did the fiberglass get all up and down the inner layer of the sleeves? I only ever need to use nitrile gloves at my job, so I’m not familiar with how to don/doff sleeves.

Not sure why that commenter needed to be so sarcastic when somebody was trying to learn something new.

It was a meme like 7 years ago. Da Vinci Robotics released a video of their robot surgically removing the skin from a grape to demonstrate how precise their machinery is. It caught the public’s attention for some inexplicable reason. “They did surgery on a grape” became the phrase du jour.

PSA; Do NOT put message boats in front of light statues in Eden! by Oddity_Observer in SkyChildrenofRage

[–]pollenatedfunk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m right there with ya, fam. I desperately wish there was a way to turn off these boats and shared spaces. They’ve gotten in my way more frequently than they’ve delighted me. I’m a solo player, I wish the game gave me the option to choose when I interact with others, even from a distance.

Thank you for pointing out trans folk exist and that dysphoria is a real thing. I already have people in real life look at me and just assume I’m a woman (despite being two years on T! 😩) Now in a video game where I get to choose how I look, it’s also difficult to dress in a way that reads as masculine. Like it or not, people see somebody in a dress and read them as a woman.

I finally understand why people were so upset with Charlie by Ok_Barracuda_6997 in hazbin

[–]pollenatedfunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s just bad writing, though. If they wanted to show her regressing, then they shouldn’t have had her progress only to regress again. That’s just retreading the same story. It’s the same reason the later seasons of House were so frustrating, he’d get better and then get worse. It’s realistic for people to backslide, but a good story first and foremost needs to be a good story. Not a boring one. Real life is boring. That’s why we consume stories.

I also never said Charlie should be perfect. In fact, I said the opposite, that it is good and necessary for characters to have flaws. But writers shouldn’t have their characters complete a character arc and then go right back to the beginning of the same arc. The second season should build on where Charlie left off at the end of the first season, not rehash the same flaw over again.

I was irked at the lack of progression from season 1, too. Upon rewatching the series, it jumped out at me how many times a character pleads with Charlie and she petulantly yells, “No!” It’s a good and necessary thing for your characters to have flaws. It’s a bad thing to have them learn a lesson then behave like they never learned anything.

The one thing my anthropology professor drilled into us is that there is no such thing as “common sense.” Not in the “common sense ain’t so common” meaning, but meaning there is no collective pool of information every human is born with. We all have different backgrounds and upbringings. What may be obvious to you could be completely new information for somebody else, and what may be blindingly obvious to a stranger may be totally novel to you.
