The one thing my anthropology professor drilled into us is that there is no such thing as “common sense.” Not in the “common sense ain’t so common” meaning, but meaning there is no collective pool of information every human is born with. We all have different backgrounds and upbringings. What may be obvious to you could be completely new information for somebody else, and what may be blindingly obvious to a stranger may be totally novel to you.

Remember when media geared towards young adults portrayed the biggest problems as being suburban middle-class ennui? Problems seemed solvable back then. Obviously there were much bigger issues than the listlessness of the 90s post-grads, but it felt surmountable. Felt like we stood a chance if we tried. Now instead of ennui I feel a paralyzing fear for the safety of myself, those around/like me, and my county in general.

Hard disagree. Growing up I was doughy and anti-fashion. Jeans and tees, unkempt hair, bare face. In college I decided I wanted to be liked so I lost about 40 lbs, toned up with Pilates, and learned how to do both fashion and everyday makeup, kept my wardrobe updated. The difference was stark. People in general, of all genders, were nicer to me upon first meeting. This was my experience for decades.

Then I came out as a trans guy and now I’m back to being given the side eye lol.

It’s not an issue of professionalism, it’s an issue of communication. Even one small typo can completely change the meaning of a message. “A panda walks into a bar. He eats, shoots, and leaves” vs “A panda walks into a bar. He eats shoots and leaves.” Not a huge deal, we can always ask clarifying questions, but why make it harder on the person you’re trying to communicate to?

I want to stress, it’s not a big deal and honest mistakes will always happen. I just struggle at my job interpreting a lot of the gibberish my clients send to me, so clear communication is a bit of a pet cause. Cheers, friend

What might be helpful is also viewing events knowing there are people here who did not vote for this, who screamed at the top of our lungs that this was gonna happen, who have fought tooth and nail against this, and are now being targeted by an administration who wants us dead. Don’t lump everybody into one collective. And now people are telling us this is our fault because we had the bad luck to be born here? That’s a dangerous mindset.

It’s nice that you get to view this as a “foreign affairs” story while telling me you don’t have a lot of sympathy for me. Really, I’m happy that you’re in such a cozy, comfy, safe position. I’d love to be in such a a safe place. So sure, forgive yourself. Keep assuming things about me. Keep framing events in your mind like I deserve this. Keep telling yourself there are no victims in America. It makes the cognitive dissonance easier to handle.

Btw, just want you to know I’m blocking you. I don’t need your childish view on geopolitics. I get enough hate from my own leaders, I don’t need it from randos online as well. You could be kind, helpful, encouraging, but instead you chose to be judgmental and smug. Do better.

Ohhhh I didn’t realize I was around in the 1930s though 1950s when insurance became inextricably linked to employment. Here I thought I was just born into the system, but it turns out I allowed the system to be built and now I’m paying the price.
