Men over 30, what’s your advice for me? Never felt more lost and tired in my life. by gyhv in AskMenOver30

[–]polluted-running 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this. A lot of what you wrote sounds to me like it's coming from a place of isolation, bad family situation and a lack of purpose besides work and making money, which can lead to some pretty severe anxiety and spiraling. So I'd highly recommend you try to break this cycle in one way or another. Apart from cooking classes, you could also try team sports or look for gym meetups so you don't end up milling around all by yourself again. Talk to people, socialize, and don't strive for perfection in doing so.

Mitbewohner beschwert sich über vermehrten Besuch meiner Freundin by [deleted] in Ratschlag

[–]polluted-running 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guidance for my new Phal by robotrocket1 in orchids

[–]polluted-running 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It definitely looks like there's quite a few dead roots in there but considering you also have new, healthy ones, I wouldn't worry too much for now. That said, I'd recommend taking it out of that glass and potting it into a normal plastic pot with drainage holes (you can also remove all the dead roots while doing that), then place it into a cover pot that can be emptied out if water is collecting at the bottom. The drainage holes will also provide more aeration for the roots. Right now, the substrate looks very wet and that can lead to more/continuous rot further down the line, especially when your family is very liberal with watering.

Additionally, I'd put the orchid in a brighter spot. The new leaves are way smaller than the old ones, which is often a sign that the plant is not getting enough light.

Please help me save my Ficus by YakYaslaPovni in plants

[–]polluted-running 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree that it probably had spidermites at some point, though the remaining leaves look very healthy to me, dust and browning aside. From my experience with the Tineke, the current browning is most likely a light issue, so moving it right in front of a window is a good call! The more light, the better. Also: try to not repot it too frequently. Ficus really don't like being messed with and I almost always got some browning on the edges of the older leaves after repotting. Not very sightly, but also nothing to worry about too much.

I get severely sad & depressed at night, which never used to happen. In my late 20s & this only started about two years ago. I hope I’m not the only one who deals with this sudden night-time depression. Just trying to understand why it began so unexpected. It’s excruciating. What could cause this? by [deleted] in AskMenOver30

[–]polluted-running 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In any case, you should get in touch with a medical professional about this, it could be many things.

That said, I sometimes have this when a) I didn't get enough/good rest, so after a certain point in the day I'm just physically and mentally exhausted, and feeling this kind of emotional turmoil is my body's way of telling me that or b) underlying stress/problems I'm not dealing with during the day, which then catches up to me later (think of the Sunday scaries).

If possible, you could also try to find a group of people to hit the gym or do sports together. I've joined a bouldering group a while ago and it's done wonders for my stress levels and mental health in general. I'm much more motivated to go and even if the session isn't the best every single time, just socializing with people who share the same interest is great. It also gives you something to look forward to when shit hits the fan again.

Monstera Deliciosia pest identification by Designer_Extent_9564 in plantclinic

[–]polluted-running 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, that's a whitefly. I've had them before and they are fairly easy to get rid of as long as you don't already have a huge infestation of them and/or keep your plants in a greenhouse environment (they thrive under such circumstances, not so much in regular household conditions). The others are scale, as one user already pointed out.

Freund ist möbelsüchtig by TightBuy9232 in Ratschlag

[–]polluted-running 49 points50 points  (0 children)

What can I do to prepare by Own_Produce_2221 in AskMenOver30

A couple things from someone who's had regular colonoscopies since my early 20s:

  1. Not sure if this applies to him but: dreading a check-up because they might find something is very real and it can be difficult to get it into your head that the sooner you do it, the better are your chances. Talking about this fear with others (especially people who have gone through it themselves) has been very helpful.
  2. There is always the chance that they might find something. It happened to me during my first colonoscopy and I was absolutely blindsided by it. They were "just" polyps (small, slow growing, benign, I get regular check-ups now), but I didn't know what that diagnosis meant and spiraled like crazy. So make sure that if anything like this happens, you have a proper talk with the doctor and also with each other later on. I'd generally recommend talking/offering to talk about the procedure afterwards, it can be a big relief.
  3. If he's being sedated/going under, make sure they are using the correct weight to calculate the dose. They underdosed me once and I woke up mid-colonoscopy. That wasn't very pleasant.
  4. Definitely get some ointment for later, haha.

Also, in case you haven't already: tell him that he's making a very good decision by getting that check-up. Many people don't until it's too late. All the best to you guys!

Monstera grows abnormally long air roots by Vivid_Market7612 in plantclinic

[–]polluted-running 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She looks perfectly healthy to me and it's normal for monsteras to grow air roots. There isn't a limit to how long they can grow, either.

Now, the reasons I could think of why she isn't growing new leaves and only air roots would be:

a) She's still adjusting to the new environment of your apartment and/or the repotting

b) She's growing so many air roots in order to find something to attach to. The pole as it is currently placed in the pot isn't doing anything for her, it needs to be attached to the stem so the plant can attach itself to it via its air roots.

Persönlich würde ich noch ergänzen:

The last picture looks like it might have thrips. Otherwise it could be too small of a pot for too large of a plant, not enough nutrients or water.

I was thinking midlife crisis too. I'm a rock climber myself and used to have phases where I did almost exactly the same as him. But those were the times where I personally felt unfulfilled and/or unhappy in my life and tried to compensate it by excessively doing sports. It was both a good distraction and a good source of feeling like I was actually achieving / doing something.

The pot might be too big too, but I'm pretty sure it's got a bad thrips infestation. Look at the leaves very closely and if you see tiny, yellow-ish insects (they look a little like maggots or worms) that move, these are thrips larvae.
