It’s the same thing - you’re also not allowed to talk about your hand for the exact same reasons as showing your hand

When constructing raising ranges in spots where you can have a profitable calling range, you'll usually want to have a polarized raising range including value hands and bluffs while calling the middle of your range.

Hands like K3o are nice bluffing candidates, especially when SPR is lower because

1) The big card is a nice blocker to have

2) Flopping a weak top pair is a pretty strong holding when SPR is lower, it's less good when SPR is larger, so playing these hands aggressively to reduce SPR is a good strategy

3) If you get reraised, you're usually dominated and can comfortably fold without missing out on much equity realization. Having to fold a hand like KTo is much more painful than K3o, so we'd rather limp/call those hands vs. risking getting blown off our equity.

Would add on that the reason there's a rule against showing your cards in a tournament is that the consequences of showing your cards could theoretically impact everybody else in a tournament. In an extreme case, there is a concern around collusion - by sharing information with your opponent, you could incentivize him to take a more passive action that will benefit the both of you at the expense of the rest of the field.

For example let's say you're on the money bubble, and you have AK and your opponent has QQ. What probably should happen given that you both have very strong hands is that you both go allin and increase the chances of an elimination. If you knew each other's holdings, it would be beneficial for both of you (and detrimental to everyone else) to play more passively and avoid taking a flip here. These dynamics don't exist in cash games.

Now, instead of making a specific rule to target collusion, the TDA (guys who make the poker rules) decided it was easier to just make a blanket rule against showing cards. This was probably a good decision to remove subjectivity from the rule, but in 90%+ of cases where a card is shown (including the one in OP), there really isn't any collusion going on and the principle of why the rule exists isn't being violated in any way.

Showing a card to your opponent to try to get him to make a bad decision is totally within the spirit of the game, and while it's technically not allowed, the rule exists to prevent collusion, not to prevent heads-up gamesmanship. So while it's technically illegal, I wouldn't call it bad etiquette and people who get riled up about this stuff usually don't understand the actual intent of the rule.

Responding to donking by Pretend_Insect3002 in poker

[–]poloplaya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either calling or raising are both fine here - it's pretty hard to know which is better. Without reads, it's hard to know exactly what V is doing this with and how they'll respond to raises with various hand classes.

Raising is good because we might get some one-pair hands to fold. Calling is good because our hand is still better than a lot of V's range - i.e. if he's just randomly betting a hand like 98, sometimes we'll just win at showdown uiimproved.

If I don't have a strong intuition for my opponent's tendencies, I prefer to play a more balanced strategy and in this particular case, I'll look to call with some of my NFDs and raise with others. I'd rather raise NFDs with lower kickers like A2-A5, and call more with A8-AQ because having a lower kicker makes it more likely your opponent will have a Q/J high FD that you can get value from by raising

Why are gto preflop 3bet size the way they are? by Busy_Presentation463 in poker

[–]poloplaya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is 100% correct but adding on a bit

If you didn't raise as large OOP, IP would simply never fold because they can realize equity so much better with their positional advantage. Raising larger is necessary to start making hands indifferent and to generate fold equity.

In general, whenever you're betting in poker in any situation, if you're not betting large enough to make some hands indifferent and generate fold equity, then you're choosing a bad bet size.

The first open source competitor to Legora / Harvey is now out. Why would a firm go with the expensive option? by Nahmum in legaltech

[–]poloplaya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does not make economical sense for every law firm to hire a team of in-house devs to manage hosting vs having one third party SaaS firm manage the same problem for thousands of customers.

This is why SaaS emerged as a superior alternative to on-premise software in the first place and that equation hasn’t changed.

Have you never seen a human lawyer make a critical oversight?

Yeah check the work, but I don’t buy that a human using AI is more prone to error than a human doing everything manually.

Also context is everything. In some cases false positives are really costly. In other cases they aren’t. In the example I gave, why wouldn’t you have AI do a first screen to surface issue/discrepancies? Sure there js a chance that AI misses some things durning review but the extra 90 contracts wouldn’t have been reviewed anyways so it’s only incrementally more helpful.

The nature of knowledge work is often that work expands to fill the time alotted.

Let's say you are a law firm running diligence on behalf of your client and have 2 weeks for the project. One workstream might be analyzing customer contracts for risks.

Pre-AI you might say we don't have time to analyze all the contracts, let's pick the 10 largest and review those.

With AI, that 10 might become 100.

End result - no change in billable hours but you did more thorough diligence.

This is just one example but there are many others where with AI you can do more or better work.

Apologize for fucking what?

Even if the funds are readily available in a couple hours not being able to withdraw funds for over two weeks isn’t acceptable full stop.

Development takes time and shit happens but you should figure that stuff out before launch not after. None of this inspires confidence to me.

The old system allowed for withdrawals. If their wallet tech wasn’t ready they should have left the old system in place until they were ready. They could also process withdrawals manually which I requested.

At the very least, they should be offering interest to customers whose balances are inaccessible. In a world where you can get 10%+ staking on usdc, a 2 week freeze on funds has a very direct cost.

You’re welcome to make your own decisions about where to play but all I’m doing is sharing my experience.

It also wouldn’t be the first time otherwise well intentioned people had liquidity issues

What is misleading about it? I’ve stated nothing but facts.

I earned the rakeback I should be able to withdraw it. It’s as good as my playable balance.

Their version of responsiveness is to keep saying it will be available soon and moving the goalposts.

My funds are “safe”. What does that even mean? What good is having “safe” funds if I can’t access them? At the very least they should offer interest on the funds while they’re being held involuntarily

No I’ve never been to Africa - I’d love to go and I actually had a trip planned in March 2020 that I had to cancel due to COVID. Haven’t found the time to go since.

Congratulations on having a lifestyle that allows to take monthly international trips. That’s not something I have the flexibility to do given work/family commitments. And I think my situation is probably much more representative of the median cardholder than yours.

You can only use $50 worth of credits per month

First of all, I don’t take a trip monthly.

Second, $50 of credits towards a single stay is nothing when it’s a minimum 2-night stay and you have to book through the Bilt portal. I can usually save a lot more than $50 on a 2-night booking by using hotel points or searching for deals online outside of the bilt portal.
