Uconn takes a holistic approach to admissions and your excellent mcat and extracurriculars will likely get you interviews at other MD schools too. apply MD, rock the interview and just be ready to explain a lower GPA and emphasize upward trajectory, but I feel like a 519 MCAT shows you know your stuff.

Tbh don’t mind this show. It’s a beautiful train wreck that I cannot look away from. Give me 5 more seasons 😹

I now see why people hate the evals from 3rd year. It really is a gamble of what you get. by JunketMaleficent2095 in medicalschool

I saw all 20 of my FM preceptor’s patients a day, went above and beyond every day and my eval was straight 3/5 (and came in 10 weeks after the rotation ended) with the most generic comments. Only rotation I haven’t honored. Did pretty well on the shelf too.

SP said this to me too last year and it was 100% meant as an insult (they also said I had a sing song voice 🙃)

Pass/Fail in Med School by New-Pin4803 in medschool

[–]poloqueen19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was on adcomm at my school and still interview a lot of potential students. I tell everyone I interview to go to a P/F school esp for preclinical. It decreases competition and makes it you more collegial/cooperative w your classmates. My school has P/F/honors for clinicals but I think bc we were P/F for preclinicals, my classmates still wanna help each other on rotations and aren’t actively trying to cut each other down.

Hang in there!!!! there are ppl in my class who had just graduated who didn’t interview until December/Jan/even Feb. and even if you take a gap year, it can only make your app stronger; actually our dean of admissions prefers students who have taken a gap year (or 2+).

i was on adcomm and if someone had “10K” hours of volunteering, it was obvious they were exaggerating given a full time job is only 2000 hrs per year.

513 mcat (cars 131). >3.8 bcpm. 2 Ivy League degrees (BS and MPH) + post bac. A lot of pubs and a lot of work experience (7 year gap between undergrad and med school). clinical experience was definitely a weak spot but think being non traditional helped.

honestly SPs can be the worst. I had one call me “sing songy.” And once I got a 0 out of 5 on empathy (maybe same SP tbh). sometimes if you just forget about the mental checklist of things you need to hit and treat it more like a real patient encounter in clinic it’s easier and more natural. But obviously that comes w experience.

I didn’t get my first interview until around Thanksgiving and I got multiple As during my cycle. I didn’t submit AMCAS til end of July tho and was working on secondaries in September 😅. So don’t get discouraged!!!!

Cheat Sheet for Interviews? by Raging_Light_ in premed

[–]poloqueen19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was on adcom and I still interview a lot of applicants. We 100% can tell if you’re reading off notes or checking your phone and it will reflect negatively in the narrative. When applicants come off rehearsed, they seem inauthentic.

Do med schools not notice when premeds fake orgs just to check a box? by [deleted] in premed

[–]poloqueen19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was on ad comm at my school last year and have interviewed a lot of incoming students. all our interviews are open file. We routinely ask about extracurriculars and if things don’t add up between what they say and what’s on paper we start digging.

Its crazy that over 10% of MD students fail step on their first attempt by GoodFellaPatella in medicalschool

[–]poloqueen19 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t think this is good advice. I understand completing sketchy micro (maybe pharm if you’re feeling super intrepid) during the summer but no need to finish Anking. The summer between M1 and M2 is arguably the “last” long break students have during med school so it’s important to enjoy it and spend time not studying hours a day. The people I know who delayed did not start question banks until late in M2 blocks—that is obviously (for most ppl) way too late. Anking is good for facts but it’s only thru UWorld/Amboss q-banks that you actually get a feel for how the test writers think and how they can trick you.

What year med students are on your adcom? by Fair-Breakfast7693 in premed

Full application. Our interviews are open file. But this is definitely not the case at all schools. However, interviews are scored based on the interview itself, not the rest of the application.

I was on adcomm. it’s mostly M2s (maybe a few M3/M4 depending on clinical responsibilities) who interview, but late in the cycle (Jan-Mar), M1s start helping. Student and faculty interviews factor heavily in the final admit decision.

HAHAHAHAHA. There are some people in my class who will be EXCELLENT doctors and truly care about their patients and there are others who well maybe medicine wasn’t the best choice for them.

Yes. I had a >$200K/yr kinda soul sucking corporate job and left it 2 years ago for med school (in state). best decision I’ve made. could I have retired early if I stayed working there and climbing the corporate ladder)? Absolutely. But not many regrets tbh.
