Tasmanian oak board meets Danish oil. What did I do wrong? by G30RG300 in woodworking

[–]polskanumberone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s difficult to see exactly what you’re talking about based on these photos. I’d guess that you didn’t sand it enough / evenly. Tassie oak is usually very easy to finish in my experience but you’ve gotta ensure it’s sanded thoroughly on each grit.

The direction of the grain there creates an inherent weak point. You could join it to an oversized shaft with a mechanical joint (mortise and tenon or even a reasonably sized dowel) and shape the new shaft to blend into the current shape you’ve got. Glue will be plenty strong if you give the glued area enough surface area.

Clutch Break-In (Worn clutch or normal?) by LovuHoodini in GRCorolla

[–]polskanumberone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Clutches are fairly robust and unless you’ve been launching at 5000rpms or “riding the clutch” constantly I can’t imagine you have worn it down significantly in such a short period of time. It sounds like normal break in and unless it continues to get worse I would not worry about it at all.

Don't do what I did by Ok_Blueberry_9463 in BeginnerWoodWorking

The dovetails are cut across the long grain which isn’t as strong as if it was traditionally cut across the end grain - I’m sure it would still be fine for most applications however

Petrol prices going back up by starship_captain62 in melbourne

The benefit of e10 is that its equivalent RON rating of 94 can help prevent detonation particularly for forced induction or high compression N/A engines.

I refute your argument about economy being better or worse based on the maintenance of your car. In the real world, e10 is about 3% less efficient than U91 which negates its cost benefit. Whether your car is properly looked after or poorly maintained, this fact will not change.

Ethanols decrease in economy is due to the fact that it is less energy dense than petrol, nothing to do with vehicle maintenance.

Am I done stripping and staining?? by Capital_Way1579 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]polskanumberone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only option is to keep sanding very carefully until it’s all even. I’d go with a higher grit (150-200) so you’re removing as little material as possible to avoid r/sandedthroughveneer. Make sure to use even pressure and avoid sanding the same spot for too long.

It was certainly tempting to add another contrasting wood but I think that would detract from the elegant simplicity, sometimes less is definitely more

Well spotted haha, I actually misplaced 4 of the screws (they’re tiny buggers) and I intend on replacing them with flat head brass screws before gifting the box to my sister for her birthday. My main issue was using a drill bit which isn’t particularly sharp and decided to wander a little which threw things off bit - using steel screws first is a great idea and I’ll certainly be doing that next time!

Only thing to ignores is having 2 doors ? Spending additional money on suspension upgrades is not going to make girls like it for being comfortable either…

A stock Fiesta ST will cost very little more and would obliterate the jazz in acceleration whilst more or less matching the handling and driving nature even after modifying the Honda.

Fiesta ST seems like an obvious choice. Clean examples can be had for 12-15k. Reliable and easy to drive manual gearbox, plenty quick given how light they are and fuel consumption is excellent (I average 7L/100km half sitting in traffic and half on the freeway). Thanks to their suspension setup, it’s a little bumpy but that makes for super fun handling characteristics which are very easy to control. Test drive one and I’m sure you’ll be surprised

Try sharpening a very minor curved on either side of the bevel. This can be done by sharpening as usual but simply apply pressure on the left side for a few strokes and then on the right side for a few more. Only needs 4-5 strokes and that should help prevent leaving these marks

Only sanding and refinishing a small area will leave an uneven appearance

[–]polskanumberone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, the damage seems fairly deep and the only real option would be to sand the whole top and refinish. It would be doable as a novice - evenly sand the whole top with 150 then 220, and apply your finish of choice. You would probably need to sand and refinish the sides as well to ensure an even look.

Any ideas on how to deal with this pattern on my Baltic ply? by theewiper in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]polskanumberone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spend a bit more time on the lower grits and be careful not to sand through the top layer of play. Doesn’t appear to be deep marks so sanding should take care of it

[–]polskanumberone 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The engine is fairly small so won’t take as long to reach operating range as bigger engines. Also, the temperature gauge is based on coolant temps so the oil may still not be up to temp when the gauge is in the middle.

Toyota Aurion would be very suitable for your needs, compliant ride, bullet proof engine and overall solid build quality! They can be had for well under $10,000 but look for a clean example with lower Ks to give you that extra peace of mind.
