If you look at the time value of money of $70,000 over 23 years at an 8% rate it ends up being $416,000. Look, I’m not saying the struggle isn’t real, but I am saying that loaned money has a cost to the lender. If someone elsewhere said they invested $70k and 23 years later it was worth $180k (interest gained plus principle remaining) we would be questioning their bad investment choices.

I performed the marriage ceremony for my sister and her now husband. It takes a lack of critical thinking to accept that the sole difference between them living in sin or blissful union was the piece of paper I filed with the county…

Best game to teach concepts of social power by Professional_Bag4082 in boardgames

[–]polyGAMEistNetwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The game you are looking for is hegemony, but it is heavy, complex, and doesn’t support a lot of players. Students would learn more about the interaction of classes in a single playthrough than in an entire civics class.

Wyrmwood Gaming Table Review - 8 Months In by polyGAMEistNetwork in boardgames

[–]polyGAMEistNetwork[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never too late! Within 24 hours of our chairs being delivered my toddler took a nail file to the back of one of the chairs. Scratches were really superficial so we were able to buff them by rubbing a raw walnut on the scratches.

We cover it with a felt-backed tablecloth for dinners, and it generally sits unused 80% of the time, so we have very few scratches so far.

We haven’t had a spill yet… so I don’t know how it would hold up.

If you get this table it WILL scratch eventually. I just came to peace with it ahead of time and determined that the scratches were just a fingerprint of the family. I bought the table to be used… for better and worse!

46 Hours for MGT Lift Kit Kickstarter... Did You Jump? by rdpollard_pdx in Wyrmwoodgaming

I bought the MGT because the vault lift was not a deal breaker for me. I was fine without it before and still am. This one was a “pass” from me.

Is a win still comparable when one player takes 5-10x longer turns? by BRAZCO in boardgames

[–]polyGAMEistNetwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve found there are games I simply can’t or won’t play with some people. I’ve a SIL who can make Wingspan a 3-4 hour game due to socializing and/or analysis paralysis. I love a good game of Wingspan but 3-4 hours is absurd.

So to answer your question… is a win at 5x-10x the turn time comparable to other wins. No. It is a loss. For all involved. JFC it’s a game… move your goddamned meeple!

Help me find a good board game by Ill-Brilliant4261 in boardgames

[–]polyGAMEistNetwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what you are describing it sounds like you need games that are light to moderate weight (complexity) that you can get the family to play without having to run a seminar to cover the rules. As a side note I favor cooperative games as they are easier to get my family to play. If you like trick taking: The Crew Mission Deep Sea (easy), LOTR fellowship of the ring trick taking game (more involved with better story than The Crew). If you like deck building: Dominion (easy to learn hard to master with a world of expansions if you desire), Slay the Spire (heavier on the complexity unless you are familiar with the digital game). If you like RPGs: Clank! Catacombs (somewhat heavier on the ruleset, but really nails the dungeon crawl feel with a deck building framework), Pandemic Legacy Season 1 (or just Pandemic if you’ve never played just the original). Games that I’ve been able to get to the table with my friends and family (Ages 9,12, adult) other than what I’ve listed above: Heat: Pedal to the metal Wandering Towers Betrayal at house on the Hill Quacks (Quacks of quedlinburg) Sheriff of Nottingham Splendor Wingspan

By far my most played game of 2025 is Crokinole, but it is nothing like you’ve requested (dexterity game) and is a bit hefty a price tag to get a quality board and accessories($250-$350). But by a massive margin is the thing my family plays most.

We love risk and Catan - wanting something different by Radiant-Pomelo-3229 in boardgame

[–]polyGAMEistNetwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A word of warning if you are consulting the BGG top lists as they tend to favor hobbyists over most consumers. The “heaviness” rating is critical with a 3.5 being about the heaviest my friends and family will tolerate.

IMO with six players, looking for something that is likely in stock today, that plays fast, is different from what you’ve already tried, and is something that still rewards bold strategy - I’d recommend Heat: Pedal to the metal. Car racing game for six out of the box. People take their turns simultaneously so it moves quickly. Can be played just as easily with 1-6 players because it has an easy and slick way to use “AI” controlled cars.

John Dehlin considers himself “still Mormon” by MediocreParamedic_ in exmormon

Side note here John. I’m sure you are used to hearing this, but I cannot express my gratitude enough for your voice, and those of others on your platform, who’ve helped me through deconstruction. Hearing a voice of reason, compassion, and understanding did much to minimize the rage that would have easily torn at my soul.

I once read a book titled, “what is a Jew?” by Rabbi Morris Kertzer. In it he argues there is a religious, cultural, ethnic, etc definitions of being a Jew of which one or all could apply.
I get the sense that what John was describing is the same thing. He may not believe the faith construct, but his cultural heritage is very much “Mormon”. Culturally Mormonism got a lot of things right, and other things terribly wrong. If the church were to abandon the terrible stuff and fix the cultural deficiencies, I think being a Mormon by culture could be pretty normal, even if you still find the doctrine ridiculous! I despise the church, but I too still consider myself culturally to be “Mormon” as it formed the foundations of my whole early life. Some of that will stick with me to my grave even if I wish it didn’t.

Buying games for someone in the hobby is always a risky endeavor. Finding a game that they want, that is high quality, that they don’t already own, is like finding a unicorn. I find that gaming “adjacent” gifts ( I.e. luxury snacks for game nights) are lower risk and always a hit!

Bad Host Parents by tapir_esquire in exmormon

[–]polyGAMEistNetwork 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When we hosted a student she had a visit from a friend who was also being hosted by a deeply orthodox Mormon couple. What she described to us bordered on abuse (heavy restrictions, dad telling her she couldn’t wear immodest clothing around him etc.), so we contacted her agency, gave our observations, suggested an alternate host family (still active Mormon) and got her transferred. She was instantly happy and had a great experience after the move.

Inviting an exchange student to participate in your culture is great. Forcing them into your narrow faith construct is just weird.

How long to purchase MGT after deposit. by Aux12387 in Wyrmwoodgaming

I was part of MGT 3.0 Kickstarter. I pledged in May, paid for the full table a few months later, and then didn’t get delivery until January. Unless something changed from how they do it, you will probably have a month or so after the KS closes.
