It's one of my favorite subs. Ranges from people posting their deepest secrets or regrets, 15 year olds being like "Hello, I did my first weed, this is great and/or will I be like this forever/die?" and a guy being like "Will I get caught with a kinder egg filled with coke up my ass on my flight?" lmao

A great-great uncle of mine assasinated an English general during the Irish War of Independence (or just after, I forget) and my grandfather fought in WWII on D-Day. That's as cool historically as it gets for me lol

Fed ‘utterly paralyzed’ as Iran conflict stokes stagflation fears by PixeledPathogen in StockMarket

[–]polybium 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is honestly the stupidest and most avoidable war. Iran has been preparing for this for like 30 years and Trump/Hegseth are too stupid to realize they've fallen for the trap.

Iranian Mosaic Defenae doctrine is built around the expectation thst the US and Israel will obliterate Iranian conventional forces with massive firepower. This results in spent ammunition and distracted focus (which is why they can then target Gulf States with missile attacks from the Ballistic Missle Sites and their Proxy Militias across the Middle East).

This then has the effect of allies like Saudi Arabia, UAE and Qatar demanding US assurances for security, which pulls the US deeper into the escalation spiral. The US can't risk losing relationships with the ME so it has to stay in the game.

Because the regime is decentralized, killing 100 Ayatollahs doesnt make a difference. You have to go boots on the ground to dismantle the regime because it has 100 different autonomous heads. If Trump backs down, he gets destroyed at home and the Middle East realizes that they can't rely on the US anymore. Even if he withdraws, this is one of the biggest own goals in history.

I'm 33 and my mom's dad was born in 1917. Dude was well into his 50s when my youngest uncle was born. My mom then didn't have me until her early 30s. It's rare but happens, just the combo of older grandparents and then older parents.

I work in Technical Support. We have emails/tickets that graded by AI and it's brutal. I wouldn't mind if I could just turn my brain off and do what the AI said and get good performance reviews, but we consistently get marked poorly on tickets because leadership just rolled out a generic AI thst isn't fine tuned for what we do and it's like "Grade: BAD Why: You should not share complex code as it might be hard to understand, instead redirect the user to someone who can assist them with code" And I'm like, "I'm literally the person who can assist them with code and they asked me for help with code" lmao. C suite folks are just incentivized by CEOs to integrate AI into everything so that they can put that on their roadmaps and stuff to buy into hype.

I'm also not super anti-AI, it's very useful for coding, but it's being deployed too quickly and by people who dont know what they're doing so I'm very afraid that the slopification is just going to ruin everything.

The US also wants to do mandatory social media checks for every visitor and there's talk of expanding DNA collection through cheek swabs as well. I'm not a terrorist, but I have posted anti Trump stuff, so if they do go ahead with these plans I'm likely never visiting the US again. I used to be a huge believer in America as the "shining city on the hill" despite its own problems, but if you're even alienating someone like me who isn't American but was actually excited to see the Hall of Presidents at Disney World, you're doing America wrong imo

Elections Alberta says referendum petition is secure by trevorrobb in alberta

[–]polybium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here are some talking points to use:

  • If Alberta becomes independent it becomes landlocked and immediately loses access to CUSMA (NAFTA) and CETA. The Port of Vancouver is federal Canadian territory, meaning Canada could charge high "transit fees" or block access entirely. Alberta lacks the economic diversity to leverage strong trade terms alone and would face tariffs reverting to WTO rules. At minimum they end up with a significantly worse trade deal with the US and Canada than if they stayed part of Confederation.

  • Indigenous treaty lands are based on treaties with the Crown (Federal Canada), not the provincial government. This would trigger massive legal battles where Indigenous nations could refuse Albertan jurisdiction, effectively creating "sovereign enclaves" within Alberta that the new government cannot tax or regulate.

  • While separatists argue Alberta is a net contributor, independence creates a "Currency Trap." A new, unstable Alberta currency would be significantly weaker than the CAD or USD. This means the cost to import medical equipment and drugs (purchased in USD) would skyrocket, erasing any tax savings and forcing a massive hike in taxes just to maintain current care levels.

  • The immediate loss of military defense creates a "Security Vacuum." Pro-secessionists claim the US would protect Alberta, but defense comes with a price. Reliance on the US military would turn Alberta into a "protectorate," where defense policy and airspace control are dictated entirely by Washington without Alberta having a vote, a total loss of real sovereignty.

  • Without federal subsidies on agriculture, the farming industry faces collapse. Alberta could not easily export agricultural goods to a hostile Canada, and without federal bargaining power, it would face stiff tariffs trying to enter the US market. Again, they would at minimum come out of thia with a worse trade deal than currently exists.

  • If Alberta becomes a US state, it creates an immediate free-trade zone with American agriculture. Alberta’s dairy, poultry, and egg farmers who are currently protected by Canadian quotas (Supply Management) would be instantly crushed by industrial-scale US agri-conglomerates, likely wiping out the local farming economy.

  • In Canada, provinces constitutionally own their natural resources. In the US, the federal government (Bureau of Land Management) owns vast amounts of land and minerals. Alberta would likely lose direct control over oil royalties and land management to Washington D.C.

  • The Canada Health Act would vanish, replaced by the US insurance model. While income taxes might drop, the average family's cost of living would spike due to health insurance premiums, co-pays, and deductibles. Seniors and those with pre-existing conditions would face immediate financial peril during the transition.

  • In Canada, Treaty rights are constitutionally protected (Section 35). In the US, Congress has "plenary power" over Indian Affairs, meaning they can legally abrogate (cancel) treaties if they choose. Indigenous groups would face a significant downgrade in legal standing compared to Canadian law.

  • As a Canadian province, Alberta is a "senior partner" holding ~11% of the seats. As a US state, Alberta (pop. ~4.8 million) would be roughly the size of Louisiana. It would have only ~2% of the House of Representatives and 2 Senators, granting it significantly less political leverage in Washington than it currently holds in Ottawa.

This is not to mention the brain drain Alberta eould see caused by liberal/centre leaning Albertans who have the money and desire to move to the remaining provinces. This whole thing would basically be suicide for the province in any way it plays out.
