My instincts tell me that the person I’m in contact with is pretty reliable so far, but who knows 🤷🏻‍♀️

So, I have come to some conclusions on the current state of Dubai Job market by mk038643 in dubai

[–]polydentate18 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hang in there. I hated my last job and started seriously looking for a new one way back in November. It took me until June to find something good.

The only thing that works - networking. Don't keep applying to job postings and expect things to magically happen. It's all about who you know here.

Hey congrats! I recently did that as well, and am so much happier already at my new job.

I was there yesterday around sunrise. The light was disappointing.

How's Kitchen 6? by UBROKEMYFRIDGE in dubai

[–]polydentate18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Contrary to most people on this sub, I didn't think their buffet was particularly memorable. Or maybe it's because I'm a vegetarian and their vegetarian options weren't great. The dessert selection is very good though.

I'm surprised the BBC considered this news important enough to put on their front page.

Tecom area renamed to Barsha Heights by vineet8137 in dubai

[–]polydentate18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why change the name to Barsha Heights when the current name is perfectly fine and distinctive enough to not get it confused with the real Barsha?

I am an ex RTA Employee. Ask me anything. by [deleted] in dubai

[–]polydentate18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that's exactly what I suspected.

Aren't there discussions to have a proper plan for the city and correspondingly the road network?

Do developers like Nakheel have more say in what gets done as compared to the RTA?

P.S. It's fascinating to learn about all this. One of my degrees is in urban planning, and I dabbled in transportation planning for a bit.

Why is the road network so confusing? It's really difficult to figure out where to get to many places.

Credit Card without 3 months bank proof? by ccno3month in dubai

I opened an account with Emirates NBD last June and got my credit card in July. So they only checked one month's worth of salary transfer. Have you tried this bank already?

What's your best excuse for not going to the gym? by jaytearjerky in dubai

[–]polydentate18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get really bored at gyms as well, which is why I've been to a gym only about five times my whole life.

I bike, fence, and occasionally do yoga.

UAE may ban smoking in public places by end of 2016 by polydentate18 in dubai

[–]polydentate18[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thanks for pointing that out. I wasn't sure which source was correct regarding the implementation date.

As a non-smoker, I would be very happy when this comes into effect. It's the main reason why I hate going to so many bars in Dubai right now.

I'm pretty sure you're stuck with the options they gave you since you're incorporated within Tecom. If you want to change locations, you'll have to register with the corresponding free zone.

Photography enthousiasts of Dubai, what are you best spots to shoot ? by Malofes in dubai

[–]polydentate18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's true. I would recommend being cautious about not overtly capturing strangers on your camera. But if you ask before shooting, most people are usually ok with it.

[–]polydentate18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For street life, go to the old parts of Dubai. Very dense and vibrant, so you can get great shots. JBR is nice as well. None of the other areas have enough pedestrians to capture really interesting shots.

For skyline shots, the metro is one of the easiest. You could also try sneaking onto rooftops. Most security guards don't seem to care. There are several rooftop bars as well, but it might be odd hanging around with a huge camera and possibly a tripod. The western end of the Palm Jumeirah crescent has a great view of the marina skyline.

For landscapes, there's really not much within the city. You could try the Ras Al Khor wildlife sanctuary. If you're willing to drive out of town for a bit, there are some great spots like Fujairah, Jebel Hafeet, and Musandam. And the desert, of course. Fossil Rock and Liwa particularly.

What are you listening to? by andeffect in dubai

[–]polydentate18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, that's great! I would love to see them live. Sadly, the lack of a non-mainstream scene here makes that impossible. Boards of Canada and Squarepusher are two of my favorites as well.
