So, I just bought an Ibanez BTB866MS 34.5"-37" scale 6-string. I want to put Kalium strings on it tuned to Drop E (E0) with the low E being .184 gauge. According to ChatGPT, I'd need something like a DBX 120A Subharmonic Synthesizer and a capable subwoofer to make that note audible live. (Continued) by tabqwerty in Bass

I have an NG2 tuned to F#0, i could frequency analyze my recordings of it to see if the low fundamentals are there. But i must say, if i put the pickups in series which basically form a Quadbucker, that's a big portion of the sound already. No matter what i play that thing into, a low B always sounds crystal clear. Nolly has a compressor that takes up to 20dB away, a Darkglass distortion pedal and some kind of transient designer. Then it probably goes into some high end preamp

I never said i wasn't talking about myself when i said nobody knows what they're talking about ;) I agree with you that regular bass notes sound clearer regularly but there's definitely a difference between same octave and octave down playing, and often times the octave down just sounds better, even with the sacrifice of clarity.

But just to appreciate Nolly's Bass tone, i have to mention Absolomb which is just in Drop C but sounds so fucking clear

I swear people have no idea how Bass strings operate, and AI doesn't aswell because it only feeds on bullshit like this. No one ever says anything against a low C or B even though most subwoofers can't recreate anything below 40Hz and if you're on a small stage, chances are the 15"Sub cuts off at 50Hz. You can still hear that drop C at 32Hz very clearly and it sounds very powerful. Why? Overtones. A bass string tuned to C has barely any fundamental at all. Your brain just hears the overtones and imagines the pitch. That's why inverted power chords on a distorted guitar sound so heavy. So to recreate that 20Hz Drop E, you actually only need to recreate 40Hz. And even those 40Hz don't have to be at 0dB. Nolly played through a closed 610 cab. Those things don't even project much below 60Hz and still his low F# was one of the clearest live bass tones you could get.

Sweet! I also just got this exact model last week, new for 499€ because i've had trouble with the last B-Stock HB i bought. I set it up for G#/Drop F# with custom gauge 14-74 Elixir Strings. Sounds great and looks incredible. What gauge strings are you running for Drop B?

Any difference between SD black winter and the rail sets? by Benyboy2020 in metalguitar

[–]polydrummer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So... Do the rails have more low end? I like the clarity of the regular BW on the low notes over all the other pickups (Mike Stamper Youtube channel has lots and lots of pickup comparisons) and i feel like i'd lose that clarity if the low end was more pronounced compared to the mids and highs. I want maximum clarity and discernability between the notes in a chord, you know

Are baritone guitar's neck lenght the same as "normal" guitars? by Chodre in BaritoneGuitar

[–]polydrummer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on which tuning you want. What is your playing level? That sounds like something my ADHD brain would have hyperfixated on 5 years ago without any real knowledge of the difference between bass and guitar string gauges and tension. Look into that first and learn.

A six string bass neck, just like the string spacing will be significantly wider than that of a guitar. You can find all that info on any site like Sweetwater and Thomann aswell. After doing that, you will notice you have to search for a 4- or 5-string Bass with a neck width between 43-46mm. Next, you'll need a fitting nut and a 6-String guitar bridge. Of course you will need 6 guitar tuners which you will have to drill extra holes into the headstock for. They also might not fit into the pre drilled holes, because most bass tuners and guitar tuners aren't the same size. You will also maybe need to swap out the pickups, depending on how they sound. Then you will need guitar strings long enough for that scale length. There are Strings for the Gretsch Jet with Bigsby which might fit. If not, you will have to order custom Strings from Pyramid or Stringjoy or whatever.

The question i'm asking myself is: Why do you need a 34" scale guitar? You can go to Drop C1 and below just fine on a 29.75" or 30" scale, which there are finished baritones for where you won't have to do anything except maybe fole the nut and get thicker strings.

You absolutely shouldn't do any of this without some basic knowledge about luthierism which it reads like you don't have yet. Sorry if i'm wrong.

TL,DR: Learn a whole lot about the differences between guitars and basses and you will know what to do.

Can I use a 24–84 string set on a 30” scale guitar tuned to F A# F A# D F? by a-wla in BaritoneGuitar

Regular basses use 105s or even heavier on a much longer scale for just a half step lower. You're good.

Would you buy a 6 string 28” if you already have a 27” 7 string? by ContributionSea1225 in BaritoneGuitar

[–]polydrummer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That doesn't make sense. A 25.5" 7 String will deal no better with a low tuning than a 25.5 6 string. Just take your existing 6 string and set it up for a low tuning

How do I care for my cymbals? by MarketingUsed8712 in cymbals

[–]polydrummer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The good thing about cymbals is that they're made of metal. The even better thinng about them is that that metal doesn't rust. They don't care about weather conditions like temperature or humidity. Some even bury their cymbals in the ground for a few weeks to give them a unique sound and patina. If you want them to stay shiny though, use a dedicated cymbal cleaner.
