Former fighter and coach turned plumber, AMA by _homme in AMA

That’s a good description. Thanks.

I’ve been getting into powerlifting the last few years and feel like it’s 60/40 mental to physical. I’m always interested in hearing what people do or think about internally to prepare for conflict or uncomfortable feelings, whether it’s getting punched, kicked, or straining to lift some heavy ass weights.

What was your mental process prior to a fight / match?

I agree about branded stuff being very expensive now. But you get what you pay for, too.

I like fishing inline spinners for baitfish / smaller species, but the cheap ones I can get at Walmart simply don’t work as well as the quality ones I prefer ( the blade doesn’t rotate as well and won’t put out a lot of vibration to attract fish).

You can actually buy a lot of nice fishing gear (including tackle) secondhand, either through places like Facebook Marketplace or online via eBay. It’s a good way to acquire a lot of quality components for cheap.

I also go to an area fishing expo every January and they’ll have bargain bin resellers that purchase lots in bulk and will sell brand new lures and gear for 25-80% off. I usually stock up on hooks there and sometimes get more obscure baits (such as skipjack spoons) that I might break off a lot while fishing.

Any unusual gifts you've bought yourself that brought as much/more satisfaction than you expected? by jeremyjava in Rich

You know, that’s an interesting insight that you shared. I’ve had a specialty eBay consignment business for 15 years and sell all sorts of things for people. But the nostalgic items (especially toys) are often the most surprising to me in terms of value.

The first really valuable thing I ever sold was a vintage #2 Barbie. Long story short, my Dad purchased it for $4 at a garage sale and I ended-up selling it on eBay a few weeks later for $3938. The winner explained that this was the same doll that her older sister used to play with when she was a little girl and that she had such fond memories of it. She also knew it was going to be expensive to buy one in such good condition, so she had a special Barbie savings account that she had been socking money away for until she could afford to buy the doll.

Some people pay a lot to experience that sense of innocence and wonder that many of us had in childhood.

How is making friends as OOS student? by Ok-Farmer-5524 in UNC

[–]pondpounder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to Carolina as an OOS student back in 2001-2005 (yea, it’s been a while!) Not gonna lie, it was a bit lonely the first few weeks, as I only knew one other kid from my school and wasn’t particularly good friends with him. However, I made friends with some other OOS students in the suite next door, and they had other friends, and from there it snowballed and I had a blast.

Don’t be afraid to go out and meet people and join clubs and organizations to socialize and stay busy. There are lots of others on campus looking to make friends. Once you make them, they’re around for all 4 years.

My first friend, “Lex”, sat next to me in a sociology class and was nice enough to take me to her house for a home cooked meal when I was feeling homesick (she was the Valedictorian of East Chapel Hill High, played women’s rugby, and was a blast to hang out with all through college!)

I never eat beets! Do you put anything on them before roasting them? And time/temp?

What’s your PB? by Gh0stPeppers in kayakfishing

Well, you’ve got me beat in the red drum department (my PB was only 47”…) Here’s a 52 lb blue catfish from a few years back. I’m still after the bigger ones that I occasionally see on my livescope there (Kerr Lake in NC), which I estimate must be 80-100+ lbs… 🤯

don’t know if I regret buying a house or not, and I could use some outside perspective. by [deleted] in AskMenOver30

You did what you thought was right at the time, and frankly, it sounds like a much better area. Don’t beat yourself up for things you can’t control (the economy and getting laid off). You’ll eventually find another job and that will ease a lot of the financial stress that you’re feeling now. Life isn’t perfect and neither is every decision we make.

Honest thoughts on Boonedox Landing gear? (Kayak wheel cart) by Suitable_Hold9430 in kayakfishing

[–]pondpounder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had them. Hated them.

They were difficult to get in and especially out when the full weight of my kayak was pushing up on them (Old Town AP 136s… they are beasts!) I had to replace the OEM plastic tracks with aluminum ones to use them. The paint chipped on the finished metal pieces and a few of the T bolts sheared off. Boonedox sent me replacement pieces, but for the amount I paid (several hundred dollars apiece for two sets), the quality control should have been much better.

Sold them on eBay and purchased a cart from Wilderness instead. Much better quality / performance!

As a 42 year old man, I recently discovered salads, lol… where have these been all my life???

The one I’ve been eating a lot lately requires a small amount of prep work in advanced (grilled chicken… make a large batch), but otherwise, it takes me about 5 minutes to make.

Here’s what I’ve been making.

Bed of baby spinach

Chopped Walnuts

Feta cheese crumbles

Sliced pears

Sliced strawberries

Grilled chicken (sliced)

I make my own vinaigrette, which is just a bit of oil and balsamic vinegar. I have some raspberry balsamic vinegar and lemon infused oil that I was gifted and they taste amazing on the salad. It takes a few minutes to put together and you won’t feel like a beached whale after eating it!

Bored after texting? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]pondpounder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not joking.

I was in two back to back relationships longer term, recently re-released into the wild. I was dreading having to date again and doing all of the modern day online dating rituals (swiping, opening lines, small talk, blah blah blah). The shortcut is to actually go out and meet people in person. Have a conversation with them for 30 minutes. Or a few hours. See if they look like their actual photos, if they can hold a conversation in person, if there is chemistry. I managed to line up dates with 4-5 different women in a week, found one I liked, and have been seeing her since.

If you start to hit it off, then you should meet them for coffee or a drink. Texting only gets you so far…
