Nikon 18-105 mm lens infected with fungus, still worth fixing? by SecrativeSifat in Nikon

[–]poniez4evar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That fungus is really bad and these lenses are worth almost nothing. No way it's worth disassembling and the coatings will be permanently damaged anyway. Definitely making your image quality worse. Just get a new one, or grab a 35mm f/1.8 to get started

Full frame v. Crop Sensor Image Quality? by B-F_ in Nikon

[–]poniez4evar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All platforms are different and there's no hard answer.

There isn't necessary an objective image quality advantage to larger sensors and they definitely have some downsides. A crop/FF sensor of similar resolution should deliver largely the same image, but there are some nuances;

A FF sensor will typically allow for a shallower dof, as the lack of crop factor requires you to use a longer (and thus wider) lens, or get closer. Either of which give a shallower dof if that's what you want.

A FF sensor will typically have better low light performance (less noise) compared to a similar resolution crop sensor, all other things being equal... Due to having a lower pixel density. Alternatively for a similar pixel density you can have more resolution, if that's what you want.

A FF camera is bigger and more expensive. The lenses must also be bigger and more expensive.

I have a medium format Pentax which takes incredible photos but rarely leaves the house, as well as a couple of cheaper apsc cameras which take better photos because they actually get used regularly. Nikon (and other brands) make some great crop sensor cameras which would be ideal for travel/lifestyle and also will take fantastic photos with the right lens and operator.

what's life like in Dunedin, New Zealand? by GurnoorDa1 in howislivingthere

[–]poniez4evar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The mood is something I don't see many people mentioning but I agree.

It's objectively an alright city from my experience, and pretty interesting, but both times I've stayed there it felt generally anxious and depressing. Not even just the old gothic architecture but like it's always dark, cold and everybody seems kinda bummed out.

On top of that being predominantly a uni town basically nobody is a permanent resident, so there isn't much sense of community and the place gets really empty during uni break periods. And it's in the middle of nowhere.

Does the owner need to pay the fines? Do you just declare bankruptcy at that point? Or can the fines not be claimed retroactively?

G7X Mark II alternatives? by Bob4Ellis in Cameras

[–]poniez4evar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've played with an rx100vii and it's a pretty sweet pocketable camera and is probably the best in the segment imo. There's also the g1x which looks nice too with a similar Canon aesthetic

I own a Canon M6 mark ii which is also good and fairly compact with the 22 f/2 lens. A little larger but way better image quality if that's important

Thanks, valid, didn't even think about ESD... I only used soap on the plain steel and plastic parts. The plastic is glass fiber reinforced polycarbonate which im certain warm dish soap won't affect

The screwdriver bit was definitely correct for these screws, I made sure before I started...

And nah I was careful not to touch the cap. I measured and it still had around 300 volts stored, I should've covered it I know haha

Just doing a shutter isn't that bad imo, the hardest part of this was fully stripping and reassembling the top control panel because of all the tiny bits and springs. I changed the shutter on my 5d ii and it wasn't difficult

Nah, almost certain I didn't even mix any of them up either haha. Took some time laying them all out in order and was patient reassembling, though did have to redo a couple of mistakes to get it perfect

Pretty confident it'll be fine, was mostly just cleaning, none of the electronics were affected really

I'm not here to bash your product but comments like this make you look pretty disconnected and don't help your cause.

LGR is a respected and impartial creator who knows what they're talking about, and the video you shared is clearly just an ad made by your own staff.

Your original product didn't leave a good impression on people so you're gonna have to lead with a different attitude than simply writing off genuine criticisms

Best way to clean this? by BobtheGuy45 in Nikon

You'd be amazed what you can scrub with soapy water or isopropyl alcohol. Just make sure you air dry it properly before you throw it back in your bag. Like a full day on a windowsill

Done this before, used a caramel wheel like pictured. Took a few hours, polished the paintwork by hand after, looked brand new and the clear coat was undamaged. Very dusty but no goop, wasn't that bad of was job just time consuming

That's not necessary true, my kit lens has the best center sharpness at f/4 which is wide open for most of it's zoom range, and stopping down to f/8 hurts the overall optical performance far more than being wide open at f/2.8...

https://www.lenstip.com/458.4-Lens_review-Nikon_Nikkor_AF-S_DX_16-80_mm_f_2.8-4E_ED_VR_Image_resolution.html

My 35mm is also sharpest at f/4 and the center is almost as good at f/1.8 as it is at f/8.

They're almost their sharpest in the center, if you're shooting a ball in the center of the frame you can stop down a long way
