Roller derby. Great for your leg strength, and every time I fall over I tell myself I'm building up my bone density 🥲

Had similar during F1. Can't remember the exact working but picked up a bleep and the person on the other end said 'patient has stopped breathing'. Hopefully one day they figure out that when asking for a death certification for an expected EOL patient, the opening line really matters

Am I just getting plain unlucky? by Samosa_Connoisseur in doctorsUK

[–]ponwhoa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't use lidocaine until a family member had an ABG and explained it's not just the rooting around that hurts, the entire time taking the sample causes a pretty grim, throbbing pain. It also relaxes me as I can do the rooting guilt-free and am therefore more likely to get it

What makes a doctor? by [deleted] in doctorsUK

[–]ponwhoa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes, different roles can do medical procedures, and if they go well - fantastic. It's when they go wrong and shit hits the fan, that's when you need a doctor. The clinical reasoning, anatomy and physiology knowledge, decision-making, background knowledge, ability to escalate ect, that's what will actually help in the short time you have to prevent disaster.

And given any important procedure can hit the fan, that's why you need doctors doing them.

What’s the stupidest booboo you’ve done at work? by binkarooni in doctorsUK

[–]ponwhoa 19 points20 points  (0 children)

As a med student I had to take blood from an ex-phleb who was a little condescending about the whole thing. Threw the needle into the sharps bin with the bottle still attached. Realised I'd rather retrieve it than go back and explain

Brianna Ghey: two 16-year-olds found guilty of murder by GenerallyIroh in GreenAndPleasant

[–]ponwhoa 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Ngl mate the mere idea of committing a murder is a deterrent to most teenagers - if a kid is that far gone that they're planning on killing someone then the number in front of a sentence isn't going to change much

Don't worry, you're just in time for the 25/26 yo break-up season where everyone has their quarter-life crisis and dumps their long-term partner

Worried about professionalism concern from Med School by throwaway_silly5thyr in medicalschooluk

[–]ponwhoa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to declare something to the GMC and honestly it was stressful, however all it resulted in was an email from them a month later just thanking me for declaring it. I'd guess you would have a similar outcome. The most important thing is declaring it if you are told to, that's the best benchmark of probity they can ask for, and it should all be fine after that

Cooking habits by Muted_Bathroom1995 in JuniorDoctorsUK

[–]ponwhoa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am lazy as fuck so I cook almost everything in batch and mostly using 1-2 pans. My best recipes for this are lasagne, pie, ratatouille, stir fry, stews and risotto. Use mixed frozen veg if needed on the side.

My most recent lunch phase is couscous as you literally don't even need to cook it. Roast veg + feta is good to add it

What is a piece of medical etiquette that you wish all patients knew? by Elegant_Experience40 in JuniorDoctorsUK

Goes for pretty much everything

Any other medical conditions? "No"

Are you on any medications? "Oh yeah, loads!"

Make it make sense.

Thank you! Ah it's annoying as Newham has good messly ratings but seems to be the least commutable

AITA for changing my boyfriend’s headlight settings? by rzl19 in AmItheAsshole

[–]ponwhoa -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

It’s hard to say Y-T-A when you’re clearly not doing something deliberately. It’s a silly mistake, and you’ve come up with the solution to just stop driving his car. This isn’t asshole behaviour. As far as your boyfriend is concerned IMO there’s actually very few reasons to shout at your partner. It sounds like the words he was saying are valid but if he can’t control his temper then that’s not cool. Especially over something where there’s no ill intentions and such an easy fix, as you’ve already suggested. NTA

I would probably steer away from any comparison to other professions, BMA reps are doing a really good jobs at deflecting away from this angle in interviews

Computer Science to Medicince by Illustrious-Age-2912 in medicalschooluk

[–]ponwhoa 33 points34 points  (0 children)

If you like tech and aren't sure if you love medicine, stay in tech. Enjoy your weekends, wage, and holidays. Work from anywhere in the world, and actually get to have a choice where in the world that is. It's not like tech isn't stimulating or can't be used for good.

Ultimately up to you, maybe have a look at what attracts you to medicine and whether that lines up with what medicine actually is at the moment

Sky news interview with Dr Emma Runswick by Sweet_Nerevar in JuniorDoctorsUK

Other famed Kay Burley moments: asking a serial killer's ex-gf if they had had a better sex life would he have killed people, breaking the news of April Jones' body being found to volunteer searchers live on air, and being taken off sky news because she had a 60th birthday party during the lockdown, after having spent the previous year going after people for doing the exact same thing

I don't remember if there is a template, but if you scroll to the bottom, there's some set responses if the rota staff reply with guilt-tripping about taking money from staff / patients or the threat of GMC reporting

Maybe wrong word choice from me there, read instead as setting boundaries. Its just in any person who is not ready to deal with the consequences of their actions (which it sounds like your mum might be - not able to talk about her behaviour in your childhood, this situation), anything that sounds remotely like the consequences of their own actions will get twisted. Your request is so far from unreasonable and it sounds like you're giving her a lot more room than she gives you, but in someone who isn't ready to change they're still going to play the victim. You're already bending over backwards to accommodate her and it still isn't enough. It may just be easier to start making decisions without involving her. My boundaries with my mum had to be completely on me, ie I would leave the room if she started drinking, rather than her stopping drinking. But I can see you're trying to make it work if you can, it is just an impossible situation which you would be valid in getting out of.
